Apple Watch – An Honest Review & How To

Apple Watch - An Honest Review & How To

It’s no secret that I am a 100% loyal Apple fan, however, this is a completely personal and honest review of the Apple Watch. Along with an easy-to-follow, basic, Apple Watch ‘how to’. The fact that I’ve fallen in love with this watch has nothing to do with my love of Apple, the truth is, it’s just a damn good piece of equipment.

My number one piece of advice if you’re thinking about popping an Apple Watch on your wrist, don’t listen to negative rumours, especially when offered up by someone who doesn’t actually own an Apple Watch (I find it’s always those that have no idea and have never even tried the Apple Watch, that can’t wait to tell you all about the negative features that don’t even exist).

Apple Watch - An Honest Review & How To

Why has it taken me this long to report on the Apple Watch, of which I’ve been wearing since the day it launched? Simple – I wanted to provide an accurate, knowledgable and personal review. I’ve familiarised myself with my watch, I’ve played with the interface, I worked out what it could do, I talked about it, heck I even talked to it!

First up, let me address the most common ‘myths’ about the Apple Watch…  beginning with the battery life – this is generally the first thing I’m told about, and always told to me by someone who doesn’t own an Apple Watch: “apparently the Apple Watch battery only lasts for 3 hours before it dies, how useless is that”. Ok, now this really is utter rubbish! I’m here to tell you the battery life of the Apple Watch, in actual fact, easily lasts an entire day. Eighteen hours is the minimum I’ve experienced. Great right? So can we please stop talking about a 3 hour battery life now? Thank you.

Apple Watch - An Honest Review & How To

Apparently notifications on the Apple Watch are relentless and will drive you insane. This says more about the users ability to use the product than anything. Notifications are 100% configurable. I don’t know what else to say, other than, if you don’t like the notifications you’re getting, personalise them to suit your needs.

The learning curve is ridiculously steep isn’t it? In short, no! It’s fundamentally Apple! Apple Watch is a new product and a brand new category for Apple, but at the end of the day, it’s an Apple product. To understand the Apple Watch, you first have to appreciate what Apple does. Having that fundamental understanding of how Apple makes its hardware and software work together, how its user interface works, and how the company brings it all together is key to understanding the watch. When someone asks me how to use an Apple designed interface, I always tell them the same thing: think of the easiest way to do it, and more often than not, that’s how Apple did it.

Setting up your Apple Watch
Setting up the Apple Watch is incredibly easy, as long as you have an iPhone 5S (or newer) running iOS 8.2.
Switch Bluetooth on, open the app, scan the face of the Apple Watch using your iPhone’s camera, and you’re pretty much done.  Your iPhone will then ask for a few details – such as your Apple ID, whether you’ll be wearing the Apple Watch on your left or right wrist, which apps you want to install, and whether you want to set up a passcode – which you definitely should do. After this the two devices will sync – a process that takes just a couple of minutes.

Design and Screen
There are two Apple Watch screen sizes you can choose from. I went for the larger of the two, but that’s just personal preference. There are also a plethora of straps to choose from – leather, sports-rubber or stainless steel. The screen is pretty damn robust and you’d be hard pushed to scratch or crack the screen, thanks to the sapphire glass coating, Oh, and it’s also water-resistant, although I’m just too damn scared to test this theory.

Apple Watch - An Honest Review & How To

Navigating Apple Watch
The best way to describe navigating the watch is to think of the Digital Crown as your home/back button. No matter where you are in the watch’s interface, you can get back home using the crown. The crown has more functionality than that—it takes you from the watch face to the app screen and back again, and you use the crown to activate Siri. Siri is your homegirl – remember this! I use Siri a lot, as will any Apple Watch user. Siri is your navigation, your music player (you can even tell Siri to play your favourite songs), a remote control for your phone’s camera, and basically the ‘grantor of wishes’ for any command you have.

The side button on the Apple Watch opens your friends list. This is where you can select the friends you interact with the most; those that you want to reach quickly.  If they too have an Apple Watch, then you can send your heartbeat, doodles and other interactive messages. You can tell who has a watch and who doesn’t by the types of messages you can send someone. If they have a watch, you will see the button for the doodle screen, but if they don’t, you will have to send an old fashion message (and of course you can speak your message to anyone, watch wearer or not, rather than being expected to type anything on a small screen).

Apple Watch - An Honest Review & How To

One of my fave things with the Apple Watch is being able to make and receive phone calls! Hands full? No problem, you can still take that call. Calendar appointment reminders, emails, social media platforms – they’re all there, and fully interactive.

Health Kit – this is a very cool piece of technology. You can track your movement, steps taken, distance, weight and other information about your body. You can see how many calories you’ve burning throughout the day. You’ll get handy reminders to stand up and get out of your seat. For someone desk-based, this is a handy little ‘move and stretch’ reminder. There’s a whole heap you can do with Health Kit, but I’m just giving you the basics.

MAC Autumn/Winter 2015 Trends: Beauty Is Diversity

MAC Autumn/Winter 2015 Trends: Beauty Is Diversity

In the constant and evolving conversation of what defines beauty today, true makeup artistry broadens the propositions and opens our eyes to inspired options of how to celebrate beauty with makeup…

MAC Autumn/Winter 2015 Trends: Beauty Is Diversity

Beauty is diversity – we no longer expect trends to follow a common thread. Yes, it seems we’ll be getting a wider range of trends to suit every makeup inspiration. Amen to that! Dark vs light, hard vs soft, colour vs muted tones, texture vs technique – MAC makeup artists have created a varied mash-up of eras and ideas to compose this season’s trends presentation.

MAC Autumn/Winter 2015 Trends: Beauty Is Diversity

MAC, the oracle of makeup artistry, has given us license to explore and experiment with makeup, combining trends from opposite ends of the spectrum. We can be strong, dynamic and creative, to the point of reconsidering and reinventing beauty classics.

The best description of MAC’s Autumn/Winter 2015’s trends is this: makeup is polarised between dark anarchy and light romance, with the challenge being that of how to play with tough and tender beauty within the one look. Well, of course, MAC has shown us how to do exactly that, and do it seamlessly…

Check out MAC’s four key makeup trends for Autumn/Winter 2015

Beautiful and damned
How to breathe new life into the color black? By way of victorians-meets-punk-meets-couture levels of elegance. This makeup trend infuses the toughest attitudes of monochrome with a heritage of extreme elegance, providing an entirely modern vision of powerful femininity. Black lipstick, sh*t yeah!

The essentials:
Feline Kohl Power Eye Pencil – Blackest of black kohl formula
Black Chromaline – Pigmented and long-wear gel liner formula
Beg For It Into the Well Eye Shadow – Wet/dry carbon black shadow liner
Extreme Dimension 3D Black Lash – High volume, high definition carbon black mascara
Media Lipstick – Chic blackened red
Spiked Eye Brows – Universal charcoal brown eyebrow pencil
White Face and Body Foundation – porcelain luminescence in the iconic Face and Body formula

MAC Autumn/Winter 2015 Trends: Beauty Is Diversity

Strength of beauty
Elegance gets a re-think in the wake of the reality explored in the last few seasons: dressing the face in subtly beautifying makeup that strengthens the features (see blush pink, bronzer, straight brows and mascara get modernised) results in a new strength of beauty. This is as natural as we get this season. This trend is about the tension between the done and the undone, playing with nuanced shades and subtle textures in a subtle way.

The essentials:
Dark Golden Mineralize Skin Finish Natural – Universal honey-toned bronzer
Vintage Selection Pro Longwear Paint pot – A dewy, tea-stained cream shadow
Studio Sculpt Defining Powder – Soft focus, ultra lightweight gel-powder
Sweet Persuasion Huggable Glass – An elegant light pink, lip-plumping shine
Clear Brow Set – The classic, instant brow grooming tool
Just a Wisp Mineralize Blush – For a fresh feminine flush

MAC Autumn/Winter 2015 Trends: Beauty Is Diversity

Love worn
It suddenly feels right to redefine the idea of sexiness and come to the realisation that it’s moved far and away from cliché; this makeup plays with a translucent grey-scale that reinvents the smoky eye. Think makeup that has been worn all day or night, and is all the better for it. This is a trend that everyone will love as it takes classic makeup to the next level. A nuanced version of something that used to be quite ‘done’.

The essentials:
Ebony Eye Pencil – A blendable, soft slate-black
Tailor Grey PRO LONGWEAR PAINT POT – Creates a natural, mink-grey smokiness
M·A·C Studio Conceal & Correct palette – The indispensable tool for the subtlest correction
Prep + Prime Lip – A smart, matte lip perfector
Mineralize Timecheck Lotion – The ultimate skin veil, for the smoothest canvas
Groundwork Pro Longwear Paint Pot – An invisible, but eye-brightening cream “real shadow”

MAC Autumn/Winter 2015 Trends: Beauty Is Diversity

Red 70s
Red lips are reworked, with a deep red contemporary twist on the classic that is a crimson mouth. It’s retro-inspired, but not as we know it: these unconventional reds stem from the rusty haze of the 70s, stopping to pay reference everywhere from romantic pre-Raphaelite auburn tones to the brick shades of the 80s and 90s. This trend represents the reinvention of red lips in red brick, rusty red and new nuances of red.

The essentials:
Caramel and Terracotta Prep + Prime – CC Colour Correcting SPF 30/PA++ Correctors used as shadows for rich 70’s suede tones
Chili Lipstick – Sophisticated, timeless terracotta
High Drama M·A·C Retro Matte Liquid – A rich oxblood
Clear Lipglass – A shot of high vinyl in a tube
Dance with Me M·A·C Retro Matte Liquid – Classic cherry red
Uninterrupted Pro Longwear Eye Shadow – Bohemian mustard brown
Mahogany and Auburn Lip Pencils – For a precise sculpted lip, in classic russet tones

MAC Autumn/Winter 2015 Trends: Beauty Is Diversity

Yes, this season diversity is for all and we have free reign to create the most beautiful looks with guidance from MAC’s key trends. As long as it suits our personal style; the sky’s the limit.

ALL EYES ON EVA LONGORIA

ALL EYES ON EVA LONGORIA

Award-winning actress, Eva Longoria touched down in New Zealand last week to lead the search with Specsavers to find New Zealand’s most stylish spec-wearer. And did I mention I was lucky enough to meet and dine with the hollywood beauty? Specsavers you’re amazing! I think my excitement and happiness at meeting Eva is quite evident in the images below. Anyway, I digress; the reason for this fabulous event? So that I can tell you all about the Spectacle Wearer of the Year, and how you could be in to win the most fabulous of prizes…

ALL EYES ON EVA LONGORIA

ALL EYES ON EVA LONGORIA

Eva takes up the role of star judge and ambassador for the Specsavers’ competition, following in the footsteps of fellow proud spec-wearing ambassadors – actress Sarah Michelle Gellar, style icon and Mad Men star Christina Hendricks, model and TV personality, Colin Mathura-Jeffree and TV fashion star Gok Wan.

The Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition presented by Specsavers, now in its fifth year, is a nationwide search for New Zealand’s most stylish and confident spectacle wearer. Eva will join fellow judges, including comedian Jeremy Corbett and L’Oréal Professionnel Stylist Peter Dutton, to identify the Kiwi who has made their glasses into the ultimate fashion accessory.

Eva became a spectacle wearer herself four years ago, after noticing her eyes felt strained from studying late at night for a Masters degree (yup, not just a pretty face, also a damn smart cookie!) An eye test revealed Eva needed glasses for reading, which have since become an invaluable part of her life – whether hitting the books or reading a script for her latest acting role.

“As a glasses wearer I care about looking great in my frames, that’s why I’m thrilled to be launching Specsavers’ Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition and visiting New Zealand to kick off the search,” Eva explains.

“Wearing glasses is all about having fun and embracing your style. Whether I’m on set filming, studying or at a special event, accessorising my look with glasses gives me confidence and allows me to make the ultimate style statement,” adds Eva.

New Zealand judge and spec-wearing champion, Jeremy Corbett, is excited to be working alongside Eva to help find this years ultimate Spectacle Wearer of the Year.

Reminiscing on his inaugural stint as judge for the Specsavers competition in 2014, Jeremy says “Last year was great fun getting all judgey with the spec-wearing finalists. I had such a good time, I’ve been pestering Specsavers about the next one. Finally, it’s here! Can’t wait to find the next big spec wearer with Eva Longoria!”

ALL EYES ON EVA LONGORIA

The winner of the competition will receive an all-expenses paid trip, with a friend, to Los Angeles to meet Eva on the set of her latest TV show and earn the prestigious title of Spectacle Wearer of the Year. Six New Zealand finalists will win a trip to Auckland for a night of entertainment with Jeremy Corbett, as well as participating in a professional photo shoot and spec-style consultation.

Entries to the 2015 Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year are now open at: loveglasses.specsavers.co.nz

The ECOYA Grand Celebration Candle & Limited Edition Range…

The ECOYA Grand Celebration Candle & Limited Edition Range...

Candle lovers rejoice – ECOYA’s latest and largest fragranced candle, the Grand Celebration candle, is here (well, available in-store in August, so not far away at all). Fragranced in the same White Musk and Warm Vanilla as the rest of the Celebration family, the Grand Celebration candle comes housed in an opulent and original, white cut glass jar and is presented in a large white gift box featuring “With Love” emblazoned across the box. The Celebration candle was introduced to the market in March 2014 and was so well received that the six-month forecast of product wold out within six weeks! ECOYA then introduced the Mini Celebration in March 2015 and to complete the range, the Grand Celebration seemed the natural progression for this collection.

The ECOYA Grand Celebration Candle & Limited Edition Range...

If, like me, you’d happily have a scented candle burning twenty-four-seven, transforming your favourite space simply with its fragrance; the scent hugging you like the softest, snuggliest blanket, you’re going to adore the ECOYA Grand Celebration Candle. Weighing in at 2 kilos and smelling like a slice of heaven, burning through this delicious candle quickly will definitely not be a problem you’ll be faced with. Mine’s been burning for two weeks now (obviously only when I’m home) and is filling the house with a scent that truly is the epitome of divine and appears hardly touched!

The ECOYA Grand Celebration Candle & Limited Edition Range...

The fragrance, with the perfect balance of warmth and muskiness, has the freshness of citrus and leafy green notes that create a warm, mossy floral heart, atop a rich, creamy base of Sandalwood, Vanilla, Balsam and Musk. With every new release ECOYA brings, not once have I been disappointed, and the latest Grand Celebration candle is no exception. With a very polite price point at NZ$99.95, the Grand Celebration candle makes for a beautiful piece for any vignette, mantelpiece, hall table, or as a centre-piece on a dining table, as well as the perfect gift for almost any occasion. For stockists, head to www.ecoya.com

The ECOYA Grand Celebration Candle & Limited Edition Range...

Also available in (late) August, ECOYA’s two new limited edition summer fragrance releases…

The latest scents, mastered by the nose of ECOYA, perfumer Isaac Sinclair, are two youthful new fragrances; Summer Rain & Wild Jasmine and White Peach & Orange Blossom.

The ECOYA Grand Celebration Candle & Limited Edition Range...

The limited edition collections are released twice a year and are hugely popular with ECOYA’s loyal followers, with both fragrances available in the iconic ECOYA Madison Jar and the Reed Diffuser. The limited edition cartons are presented in hues of azure blue and sunkissed peach, with the candle and diffuser housed in contemporary white vessels and capped with solid white lids.

Approaching the sunny season, the ECOYA team appear to have looked to scents reminiscent of summer for inspiration; the scent of the warm summer rain hitting the asphalt, the dewiness of the grass afterwards and the fragrance burst of the first bite of a juicy peach. Madison Jar RRP $49.95. Reed Diffuser RRP $59.95.

We’d say it’s probably suitable for most skin types including spot-prone. The Turnaround Revitalizing Lotion hydrates and energises dull, fatigued skin. This alcohol-free and oil-free formula is designed to boost skin’s energy by fueling its natural metabolic process of cellular renewal Turnaround Revitalizing Serum is designed to optimise cell renewal and give skin a healthy glow and provides a radiant smoothness in just four weeks. The Turnaround Overnight Revitalizing Moisturiser is like a charged-up version of the original Moisture Surge – it’s light, hydrating, feels great on the skin and skin looks noticeably smoother the next day.  The Turnaround Revitalizing Instant Facial is a quick treatment mask that provides a very quick double exfoliation – this is a great product if you’re pushed for time as it works really well in the few minutes it’s on. The Turnaround Revitalizing Treatment Oil is a beautifully light oil that will please anyone who hates going to bed with a greasy oil slick of a face as this absorbs very quickly and lacks that thickness that a lot of facial oils have. Lastly we have the Turnaround Daytime Revitalizing Moisturiser which is another oil-free goody that feels very light and cooling on the skin. It comes in two shades, Rosy Glow and Golden Glow – the latter of which we have – but to be honest we don’t think the shades make a huge amount of difference as they’re both designed to just give skin a bit of a glowy lift. This one is probably our favourite of the bunch as it does quite a few things; adds glow, hydrates, cools, sits well under make-up and is a very good all-rounder.  RRP ranges from $55 – $115.  Available at Smith & Caughey’s and Clinique counters nationwide.

The Body Shop: Vitamin C Glow Boosting Moisturiser & Instant Glow Enhancer – the first thing we noticed with the Glow Boosting Moisturiser was the gel-like formula. It’s something that we really love about moisturisers as it generally means they absorb straight away and there’s no annoying waiting time between applying it and popping on your makeup. Next was the scent. It has such a refreshing citrus smell – exactly what you’d expect from Vitamin C right? Think freshly cut oranges… deeeelish! Other than super-hydrating we’ve noticed after application, skin looks dewy with a beautiful sheen, we’re guessing that’s the glow boosting part of it. We adore this on The Body Shop! Nice work. RRP $$64.95. Instant Glow Enhancer – An instant fix for a healthy-looking glow. Enhances skin with a fresh rosy tint, whilst leaving it feeling velvety soft and silkier. Use as the last step of your skincare regime and as a touch up throughout the day to boost your glow RRP $48.00.

Davines Haircare – One of our absolute favourites when it comes to haircare, Davines really can do no wrong in our eyes and the new DEDE range we’ve been using is no exception – absolute perfection! While there are many a collection to choose from in the Davines ‘Essential’ Range and we’re sure they’re all fabulous, we’ve been checking out the DEDE collection… DEDE Shampoo is ideal for daily cleansing. Its formula, which is characterised by a soft and light foam, gently cleanses the hair, making it soft and light, and gives it extra shine. DEDE Conditioner is absolutely fine to use every day. Its formula is designed to untangle hair leaving it soft and light. DEDE Hair Mist is again ideal for daily use. Its leave-on formula is recommended for untangling fine hair, although we reckon it would do the same for any hair type. The best bit, it’s super hydrating without weighing down your hair. It moisturises and remineralises all types of hair. It’s ideal for frequent use. The scent used in the DEDE family has a citrus and green note and the fragrance – heavenly! Available now from beautiful hair salons. For more information head to www.davines.com or www.facebook.com/DavinesNZ
