Nude by Nature…

Nude by Nature, cosmetics, beauty blog nz, style blog nz, makeup, fashion blog nz, benefit cosmetics, nz media, nz editors, BDM Grange, Clint McDowell, eyeshadow, foundation, mineral makeup

This week Gurlinterrupted attended the NZ Launch of Nude by Nature – a fabulous mineral makeup & skin care range that has already taken Australia by storm and is set to do the same here.

Held amongst the beautiful Winter Gardens in Auckland Domain, beauty editors and media were treated to a high-tea style lunch whilst the, dare I say it, YES I do – extremely handsome Clint McDowell of Nude by Nature demonstrated a flawless natural makeup look on ‘model-of-the-day’ Tineke.

Given my background in makeup artistry – it was only a matter of time (ok, about 2 seconds) before I was trying on the Nude by Nature goodies they had placed at our table (zero willpower when you put makeup in front of me) and I have to say all of the products I tried were fantastic!

Quality mineral makeup is actually damned hard to find, many have produced it, however Nude by Nature is the first mineral makeup range that has actually impressed me and has definitely succeeded where others have failed. We were very spoilt as we were gifted the skin care range in our goodie bags, so I’ve been lucky enough to try the entire range and it’s simply divine (I recommend to those with sensitive skin) and don’t even get me started on the eyeshadow palettes – I’m in love with the ‘smokey eye’ palette (used three times already) and without a doubt I will be buying the ‘ultimate nude’ palette – brilliant texture and the colour payoff is outstanding! Plus – no toxic chemicals, no harsh parabens and no animal testing – I love it!

A few highlights from the launch (and a shot of those gorgeous eyeshadow palettes)…

Little bit excited about this!  One of my favourite blogs, A Beautiful Mess, has just launched their very own app. You can officially download the ‘A Beautiful Mess’ photo app from the App Store! Just follow this link or search “A Beautiful Mess” in the app store.   It went to #1 on the apps chart… before they even blogged about it, so that tells you how good it is!

To download, you’ll need iOS 6 or later, and you’ll need to be connected to wifi, as this app is packed with features and it’s a steal at just $1.29

Here’s a little more detail on what the #ABeautifulMess app can do!

  • The app comes with fourteen cute photo border options that you can re-colour to your liking.
  • You can add, move, resize, and re-colour custom text to your photos in your choice of font.
  • A whole bunch of cute and fun phrases written in Elsie and Emma’s handwriting to choose from.
  • That’s not all. There are also filters and backgrounds that you can use to create cute notes and messages.

Deciphering The Alphabet: BB, CC & DD Creams…

beauty blog nz, style blog nz, fashion blog nz, Julep, Max Factor, BB cream, CC Cream, DD Cream, Bobbi Brown, Garnier, Clinique, makeup, MAC NZ, beauty media nz, benefit cosmetics nz, benefit cosmetics, alphabet cream, angie Fredatovich, gurlinterrupted.com

Deciphering the ‘Alphabet Creams’ that are currently flooding the beauty market can be tricky.  What started with the ever-popular BB Cream, quickly moved to the CC Cream and now we’re hearing about DD Cream (I wonder how left out the letter A is feeling right now).   With this influx of alphabet creams, many are left wondering what differentiates one from the other.  So I thought a simple breakdown of each was in order, along with a few of my tried and true faves…

beauty blog nz, style blog nz, fashion blog nz, Julep, Max Factor, BB cream, CC Cream, DD Cream, Bobbi Brown, Garnier, Clinique, makeup, MAC NZ, beauty media nz, benefit cosmetics nz, benefit cosmetics, alphabet cream, angie Fredatovich, gurlinterrupted.com

I’m sure everyone is familiar with BB Cream.  Beauty Balm or Blemish Balm is promoted as an all-in-one beauty product to replace moisturizer, primer, foundation, even sunblock; and I have to say BB Cream has been a long time favourite of mine and is pretty much my daily ‘go-to’ rather than using a full cover foundation (not to mention it’s a fab time saver!).  My BB Creams of choice – Garnier and Bobbi Brown.

beauty blog nz, style blog nz, fashion blog nz, Julep, Max Factor, BB cream, CC Cream, DD Cream, Bobbi Brown, Garnier, Clinique, makeup, MAC NZ, beauty media nz, benefit cosmetics nz, benefit cosmetics, alphabet cream, angie Fredatovich, gurlinterrupted.com

Known as the Colour Corrector or Colour Control cream, this one’s fairly new to the NZ market and gives slightly more coverage than the humble BB Cream.  With the addition of several nourishing ingredients and anti-aging properties, the CC Cream treats uneven skin tone, acts as a brightener, primer and is more akin to foundation.  In summary – a slightly more heavy-duty version of the BB Cream, focusing on light diffusing properties. The CC Cream I’m currently trying is the new Max Factor CC Cream and I have to say I’m really enjoying it.

beauty blog nz, style blog nz, fashion blog nz, Julep, Max Factor, BB cream, CC Cream, DD Cream, Bobbi Brown, Garnier, Clinique, makeup, MAC NZ, beauty media nz, benefit cosmetics nz, benefit cosmetics, alphabet cream, angie Fredatovich, gurlinterrupted.com

The Dynamic Do-All Cream! Julep is first in line to introduce the DD Cream to the beauty market. Said to go beyond the BB and CC Cream, this alphabet cream promises to deliver your standard moisturising, protecting, priming and perfecting properties (suddenly I feel like Dr Seuss), whilst also going a step further with two patented anti-aging properties, all said to decrease the appearance of pores and fine lines instantly and over time. I’ve yet to try the Julep DD cream, but it’s definitely on my ‘beauty bucket list’.

So, what do you think – are you a BB, CC or a DD Cream girl?

Kurt Counsell of Mod’s Hair Salon – Ponsonby

Meet Kurt Counsell – The other man in my life.  Hairdresser extraordinaire based at ‘Mod’s Hair PARIS’ Salon on Ponsonby Rd.  For those that follow my blog, you will already be fully aware of just how much I adore Kurt and Mod’s Hair Salon’ AND, so that you too can experience just how fabulous Mod’s are – they have gifted me with an amazing GIVEAWAY for my followers valued at $400!!  Read on to find out more about Kurt, Mod’s Hair Salon and how you can WIN a fabulous hair and nail package for you and your bestie!!

Kurt, tell us a little about yourself, the road you travelled that bought you to being a hairdresser and why Mod’s in particular?
Many years ago, when I was a chef, a good friend of mine owned a hair salon. I would often whip up a fab lunch and take it over to her in the salon and spend most of my breaks with her. The more time I spent there, the more I realised I wanted to be ‘in the industry’. So I gradually immersed myself in the salon world by doing some general admin, answering phones, washing hair, etc. in her salon. Eventually she recommended I enrol myself on a hairdressing course. So that’s exactly what I did. Based in Christchurch, I was juggling my full-time hairdressing course, with 2 part-time jobs until, 9 months later, I came out at the other end ready to take on the world of hairdressing. I was offered a full-time role at a Christchurch salon and this is really where I got my grounding in hairdressing. I was so lucky to be based in that salon as I learnt and absorbed so much from those hairdressers. They were true old-school hairdressers, just an amazing talented team who taught me everything I needed to know to get a good solid understanding of hairdressing, things you could never learn solely from completing a hairdressing course, in fact I definitely learned more from hands-on experience. After the earthquakes hit, for obvious reasons I made the move to Auckland and hunted down Mod’s. I knew I wanted to work at Mod’s as I used to go to them in Christchurch to get my hair done by a friend that worked there. I was completely obsessed with the amazing techniques they used, of which I learnt were unique to French hairdressers and thus, it’s where I knew I wanted to be – at Mod’s!

How long have you been with Mod’s
2 years and I still absolutely love it.

What inspires you to come to work and do what you do every day?
I love hair so much – like I actually love what I do and I love surprising people with new and exciting concepts.  It’s not just the artistic creative side of it – it’s the scientific element that comes with hairdressing, you need that scientific understanding, mixed in with a whole lot of creative juice. I love beautiful natural looking hair and the people who do it best are the French (and of corse Mod’s).

Best brand in hair products?
Mod’s of course! We do our own Mod’s line of hair products, so obviously that’s my first brand of choice. The Mod’s range has something for everyone and contains a lot of natural ingredients. In particular, I’m a huge fan of Mod’s GINKO ENERGETICUM – it stimulates the blood flow to your scalp, which keeps the follicle healthy and in turn, promotes hair growth. Now if we are talking specifically ‘hair care’ brands, I would also have to say Kerastase is one of THE best hair care brands.

Number one ‘hair look’ when you don’t have long and want to create a great no fuss hairdo?
I love a topknot! Literally anyone can do it (well obviously not someone with a pixie-cut). I would always opt for a more casual topknot as opposed to the ‘tight ballet bun look’. To accomplish the ideal topknot I’d use a great ‘dust powder’, scoop all your hair up, without using a brush (this creates a more casual look), pop in a hair tie and create your knot. This is a beautiful effortless look. Finish with a red lip and killer heels and you’re good to go.

You have 10 seconds before you have to grab your keys and rush out the door – which hair product do you reach for?
L’Oreal Dust Powder! Reason being, I have fine flyaway hair. With L’Oreal Dust Powder, I can just brush it through and it stays in place all day – no build-up of product and no irritants, which I find when using other dust powders.

You’re a very fashion-forward guy (if I was a guy I’d totally dress like you) – where do you draw your fashion inspiration from?
I love wearing black! Black is the new black as far as I’m concerned. In saying that, I also love statement pieces. Whether it’s a bow tie or necklace; anything different and quirky equals the perfect statement piece. I’ll take snippets from everywhere – I might see something on someone and think “yeah I like that look, but I’d change it up slightly by putting my own twist on it”. I love vintage mixed with street style, and comfort is essential! In this industry you can’t afford to get it wrong, comfort is key and I’ve worn fashion over comfort before – never again!

You’ve built up such a strong following and Mod’s has such a great reputation. What do you think it is that Mod’s does differently to accomplish this?
Mod’s French heritage. French techniques that other hairdressers just don’t know, nor do. We are the kings of balayage!

I’m going on a ‘vacay’ and have to pack light – what are the ‘must haves’ that you would recommend I take with me? (I need lots of room for shoes, so space is limited).
It’s key you are using salon quality shampoo or conditioner – whether you plan to leave your hair down or need to style it, above all else, salon quality Shampoo & Conditioner is most important, so I would say ensure you pack these.  Well, maybe just pop in one styling product containing UV protectant.

Now I know you have a manicurist on site – what’s her background?
We have the amazing and talented Debbie of Dolls House Nails. Debbie is fun, quirky and incredibly skilled in nail design. She has been in the industry for 27 years and has built up quite a following!

OK – so you’re called Mod’s hair PARIS – do any of your stylists actually get to go to Paris and train there?
YES! We get the opportunity to go the training school in Paris and it’s definitely on my to do list very soon!

To summarise – a perfect day on the job is…..
Blow waves, blow waves, blow waves!

Last time I was in the salon and we were talking about new features for my blog, you came up with a brilliant idea – a spin on the ever popular ‘what’s in my handbag’, you suggested featuring ‘what’s in my manbag’.  I love it, so, “Kurt – what’s in your manbag?”
Ok – well, I actually don’t carry around a lot at all!  But I do love my manbag.  I found this leather satchel bag in an opshop for $30. I’ve swapped out the strap on it (gotta add my own style) and it’s now perfect!  What’s in my manbag…

  • PLAY by Givenchy
  • L’Oreal Super Dust
  • Chapstick
  • PUMP mini
  • Phone (an obvious essential)

And just one other quick question – what are your 2 favourite apps on your phone?
Camera 360 and the Gameboy app (Pokémon is a rediscovered childhood addiction)

The Aromatherapy Co. – Therapy Kitchen
It’s no secret I am a HUGE fan of candles.  Admittedly I do tend to burn candles like it’s some kind of daily ritual that must be performed to ward off a bad day.  But in all seriousness I do feel the need to always have the house filled with welcoming, beautiful scents and it’s just so fitting that I’ve now found an entire range that is actually ‘room specific’, now even my kitchen smells like heaven.  If you’ve not yet discovered The Aromatherapy Company ‘Therapy Kitchen’ range, go and check it out now! I am literally in love with this collection featuring apothecary style candles, a diffuser, hand wash and hand lotion, all blended with the 100% pure and natural essential oils of Lemongrass, Lime and Bergamot.

Lipstick Pencils
Lip Pens, Lipstick Pencils, Pen Sticks, Lip Crayons – call them what you will, I’m loving these ‘lipsticks in pencil form’.  Typical of my personality – ‘all or nothing’, I tried lipstick pencils once and from that moment on decided I need to add to my growing collection every time I come across one.  The latest lip pencils that I am using on an almost daily basis are the new Max Factor Colour Elixir Giant Pen Sticks.  Application is effortless and the range of colours – swoon-worthy.  They’re not matte, cream, balm or gloss, they’re an amazing wearable texture in a range of super pigmented colours that I am thoroughly enjoying.

Perfume & Pretty Things
A Glimpse into my current trinkets and perfume faves… Changing up my iPhone cover this week, the Chanel is going into storage and I’m breaking out the Louis! I know it’s blingy, but I just don’t care – I just love my new LV cell case.

I was very spoilt recently when my guy popped overseas on business and came back with a new perfume for moi – Gucci Premiere.  If you’re anything like me and have a love for Gucci scents, you must check out Premiere.

Jewellery – currently loving my Colette Hayman long chain, gold crucifix necklace with black diamond detailing – fab for dressing up any outfit and versatile when converted into a wrist-wrap.

Last but not least, my love for tiny delicate jewellery (rings in particular) continues and these Lovisa black and gold rings featuring skulls and crosses are being taken for a spin on a daily basis!

M.A.C has a few new collections arriving in store next month, but it’s the Baking Beauties collection that I am most excited about.  The pastel  hued nail varnishes reminiscent of cupcake frosting are simply divine; and the embossed print on the beauty powders – oh so pretty! They’ve even added 2 limited edition brushes to the Baking Beauties collection. A tantalising range, good enough to eat!

M·A·C loves everything about a cupcake. Face Powder arrives in exclusively designed cupcake patterns, and Lustre Drops create a luminous finish. Pro Longwear Paint Pots add a touch of dazzle. Haute & Naughty Lash delivers two in-one coverage. Lipstick lays it on soft and tempting in tones including Devil’s Food and Raspberry Swirl. Mineralize Tinted Lip Balm provides nutrient-rich moisture. Nail Lacquer decorates in glittering Bleu Velvet and Pistachio Crème. And for professional results, two limited-edition brushes with pastel accents. Hello, cupcake!

Here’s a sneak peek of the new Baking Beauties collection:

Given everything MAC Makeup Artist Amber D creates is ‘artistic genius’, I can’t wait to see what creations she comes up with using this collection!

Now, as you know – I could literally spend hours writing about ‘all things beauty’ and there really are so many more images (full size of each and every product) that I could show you, however I know not everyone wants ‘the long version’.  So, if you’d like to see more images (or maybe just a close-up of one product in particular), let me know in the comment box below and I’d be happy to drop in some more images.

Available in-store from 6 May 2013.

Benefit Cosmetics – My ‘Must Haves’ and ‘Lust List’…

benefit-cosmetics, Benefit Cosmetics New Zealand, Makeup, cosmetics, Beauty, Must-Haves

Those of you that follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc. will already be fully aware of how excited I am about Benefit Cosmetics announcing their arrival in New Zealand.  With this exciting news in mind, I thought I’d take you through my current Benefit favs (the products I have been using and love, basically from the moment they launched) as well as touching on the Benefit products I am coveting and WILL BE acquiring the moment Benefit touches down in good ol’ Kiwi Land.

Benefit Cosmetics had me from day one with their absolutely stunning packaging.  I’ve never denied the fact I am a Marketers ideal consumer. I am a total sucker for packaging (don’t judge) and I truly believe no cosmetics company does it better than Benefit when it comes to beautiful packaging. But it’s not just the packaging that keeps me coming back for more.  As a qualified makeup artist, I obviously won’t be drawn in by packaging alone – the product needs to stack up; and their products are damned good.  Benefit ticks all the boxes as far as I’m concerned.  Visually beautiful, affordable, quality products!

Here are some of my tried and true products that I am currently using and would happily recommend to ‘Benefit Newbies’.  Perhaps a ‘starter for 10’ if you, like me, are putting together your Benefit ‘wish-list’ in anticipation of their arrival…

They’re Real! Mascara.  Believe the hype! This mascara is simply AMAZING!

So that’s it for my tried & true ‘Must Haves’ and ‘Lust-List’ items.  Now, if there are any Benefit products that I haven’t listed on here and you think that I should add them to my ‘lust-list’, I’d love to hear about them! So please let me know in the comments box.  I love getting your recommendations just as much as I love putting together my recommendations for you.

INDUSTRY NZ – Where Hair & Fashion Collide

Industry Hair NZ

On Saturday night I had the pleasure of attending INDUSTRY NZ – where hair and fashion collide.

Star hairstylists, salons and brands joined forces to recreate the latest looks straight from New York Fashion Week, held at the Pullman, Auckland.

International Talent Rodney Cutler from Cutler Salon NYC – Sponsored by Redken 5th Avenue NYC, was INDUSTRY 2013’s international guest, following on the heels of the 2012 event’s VIP Snowden Hill. Rodney and his team worked on some 30 shows each at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week – New York, for the likes of Cynthia Rowley, Badgely Mishka and Tadashi. The latest looks from MBFW – New York (Feb 2013) were showcased by the Rodney Cutler team on the main stage at INDUSTRY.

Drinks & canapes, a live band, models rocking out with their own instruments on stage, fabulous fashion and on-screen cinematography that absolutely ‘made the show’.  Here are some of my highlights from the event…

March Favourites…

Gurlinterrupted Fashion beauty lifestyle blog nz

It’s that time!  My March Favourites (or if I’m being honest – my February AND March favourites), encompassing all things ‘fashion, beauty, lifestyle’…

nz style blog ModelCo FibreLash LA'BONIC Pure Rose Repair Cream Maybelline New York High Shine Lip Gloss

ModelCo’s FIBRE LASH Brush on False Lashes
The BEST mascara EVER!!  I know it seems like nearly every 2nd day there’s a ‘revolutionary new lash extending mascara’ being released promising to do amazing things with some special new wand.  The truth is, unless is has fibre additives; it’s not going to actually give you longer lashes.  Enter FIBRE LASH.  As you will see in my photo, there are 2 applicators – one of which is mascara, the second actually coats your lashes with fibres (at first it looks a little scary – almost like applying fine wisps of white cotton wool to your lashes) but you then apply the final coat of mascara and BOOM, your eyelashes are extended to dramatic lengths.  I can honestly say “It adds 3-5mm to your own lashes, giving you a fabulous false lash extension finish”.

LA’BONIC – Pure Rose Repair Cream
A beautiful pure natural rose oil repair cream of which contains ‘Certified Organic’ Ingredients.  If you are after a truly beautiful luxurious hydrating moisturiser, and haven’t yet heard of LA’BONIC, this is definitely one to add to your beauty bucket list.  This is one of those rare gems that when applied – feels like pure decadence.

Maybelline New York High Shine Lip Gloss
You know how much I LOVE a good lip-gloss!!  Just like a magpie, I love the shiniest and the brightest and Maybelline colorSENSATIONAL High Shine Gloss is exactly that – an absolutely beautiful lip-gloss available in an abundance of divine vibrant colours.  The one pictured here is called One Shine Day and I already have my eye on another – Luminous Latte!!

Orly Flash Dry quick dry drops, beauty blog nz, style blog nz

Orly – FLASH DRY – Quick-Dry High Shine Drops
These Orly Flash Dry Drops are an absolute godsend!   Seriously, if you haven’t already discovered this miracle nail product, get it now!!  It’s amazing!!  They accelerate dry time on freshly lacquered nails and the result – glossy dry nails that are good to go, pretty much immediately.  LOVE!

KIO KIO, bare PR, beauty blog NZ, style blog nz, fashion beauty lifestyle Blog NZ

KIO KIO
Antipodean Lavender & Rimu Hand and Body Wash
Rosehip & Manuka Honey Hand & Body Lotion
I’m a little embarrassed to admit I only recently discovered KIO KIO. I thought I was pretty good at keeping on top of what’s happening in the ‘beauty world’ but it turns out KIO KIO has been making big waves for a while now and I’m officially a huge fan! KIO KIO incorporates unique beneficial wild-harvested native New Zealand botanicals, certified organic ingredients plus the added purity of mineral-rich artesian water. Their products are contemporary, luxurious, sustainable and very effective!

Arizona Drink NZ lifestyle blog NZ

ARIZONA – Green Tea with Honey
OK – I realise this is a little left-field, but it’s also my new addiction.  I know this has been popular in the US for years but only recently have I actually found it in-store.  Immediately drawn to the beautiful bottle I just had to have it.  It’s a great healthy alternative to soft drinks and it tastes really good!  The added bonus – I’ve been utilising the bottles afterward as super cute little vases.

Colette Colette, Hayman Accessories, style blog nz, fashion blog nz, beauty blog nz, Angie Fredatovich, www.gurlinterrupted.com, purse and necklace

Colette by Colette Hayman
I am just going to throw it out there – I LOVE Colette by Colette Hayman Accessories!  These 2 beauties are my latest acquisitions, but truth be told these follow several bag purchases of the same label.  Affordable, on-trend accessories in abundance – how I am I supposed to resist this shop.  Whilst I went into the shop just to ‘see what was new’, leaving this shop without purchasing something is damn near impossible.  My latest loves – this black & gold wallet and long-line gold chain with blue glass detailing! ADORE!!

theCream, Bobbi Brown, Shimmer Brick, LUSH Handmade Cosmetics, style blog NZ, fashion blog NZ, beauty blog nz, www.gurlinterrupted.com, Angie Fredatovich

theCream
OK, so clearly over the last couple of months I’ve definitely been on the eco-chic beauty product kick and when I came across ‘theCream’ I was elated!  Let me tell you a little about this amazing nourishing face cream.  For a start – I love the bottle; and what’s written on it sums it up perfectly “100% Natural, 75% Colostrum, 0% Bull”.  For those of you that don’t know what colostrum is, it’s referred to as “the forgotten miracle” and this particular product’s colostrum is sourced from New Zealand dairy herds – it’s the foremilk derived from NZ cows. [cue geeky knowledge I’ve recently learnt]… colostrum is secreted by all mammals (including humans) to be the first substance put in a newborn baby’s mouth, to boost and educate its immune system.  Colostrum is one of the most researched health compounds in the Western world. Tens of thousands of papers have been published but Big Pharma cannot patent it and make money, so it remains little used and even suppressed by drug companies.  Bovine colostrum is the universal donor and New Zealand grass-fed bovine colostrum is recognized as even more powerful than human colostrum AND no cows are killed nor hurt to obtain it.  It is produced every year voluntarily after calving by happy New Zealand cows. It’s the ultimate renewable health resource!  ANYWAY – enough of my newfound geeky knowledge!  In short – this stuff is AMAZING and I love it!  If you are after an all green, miracle face cream, then theCream is definitely one you need to try!  I’d even go as far as saying it’s a MUST-HAVE!   Not sure of all the places you can buy it, but I got mine on good ol www.health2000.co.nz

Bobbi Brown – Shimmer Brick
Oh how I LOVE Bobbi Brown Shimmer Bricks!  Over the years I have been through several (I hit pan on the ‘brownie’ brick, quickly purchased another, then worked my way through the ‘nectar’ brick). There really is no other like a Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick.  I could rave about these for hours.  As a makeup artist I love to find products that have several uses (so much easier when you aren’t lugging around a million products, especially when travelling) and indeed the shimmer brick does it all.  Amazing colour pay-off as an eye-shadow, brilliant blended together as a blush, a highlighter and even as an all over face illuminator! This one is my new Rose Brick (creates beautiful rose hued smokey eyes) but I’m fairly certain my willpower is about to crumble and I will be purchasing the 24 Karat Brick too (the perfect golds for autumn/winter).

LUSH – Emotional Brilliance Range
Ahhh LUSH – their bath products are what get me by in winter, but their fab range of Emotional Brilliance makeup is just as amazing!  If you haven’t heard of the LUSH Emotional Brilliance range you can read about it here in one of my earlier posts.  PLUS – pop into any LUSH store and get the Emotional Brilliance colour reading done free.  This little beauty is what popped up in my colour reading and it’s gorgeous.  You can use as a liquid liner or as an all over cream shadow.

Well that’s it for my March favs – I promise next month’s will be shorter, but in my defence this was more like ‘my Feb/March favs’ crammed into one, as work got a little out of control in Feb and before I knew it, the month had gotten away from me.
