Altered Art: David Irvine Turns Thrift Store Art Into Pop Culture

Altered Art: David Irvine Turns Thrift Store Art Into Pop Culture

Artist David Irvine takes what would be your average, run-of-the-mill piece of thrift store art and turns it into a pop culture masterpiece. Because let’s face it: a quaint cottage home is always better when Jason Voorhees is standing in front of it.

Irvine adds characters and elements from movies, illustrations and TV shows into his ‘Re-Directed Art’, as he calls it. His bizarre paintings depict from Star Wars characters wondering inside yards to Godzilla attacking Venice.

Altered Art: David Irvine Turns Thrift Store Art Into Pop Culture

Irvine runs an art store called Gnarled Branch via which sells his unique creations. His obsession with pop culture and its characters is obvious on his altered works. The artist chooses cheap paintings as his artistic field and illustrates them with surrealistic scenes taken from pop traditions.

Even though these images are a product of contradictory patterns, Irvine always makes sure to leave the original signature clear, creating funny connections between the background and the added characters.

Scents & Sensibility: The Perfume Edition…

Scents & Sensibility: The Perfume Edition…

Everyone, from luxury fashion labels to celebrities, have launched new fragrances over the last few months, so we thought we would feature our hot five picks from the perfumes that have recently hit the scene and heightened our senses…

Juicy Couture – Hollywood Royal
One of our absolute favourite perfume brands – Juicy Couture, has released a new scent – Hollywood Royal.

If you’re a fan of the original Viva la Juicy Fragrances, you’ll love the fresh, youthful twist Juicy Couture Hollywood Royal (75ml, $145) brings to the family.

The familiar lush candied apple and sparkling pear are joined by sultry jasmine and gardenia, with dreamy marshmallow. The fruity, creamy notes are what really shine through here. Lovers of sweet scents, rejoice!

This luxurious, flirty and effortlessly sexy fragrance will take you from night to day — literally. Hollywood Royal is incredibly long-lasting, with the initial fruity fragrance giving way to a delicate musky vanilla. And it doesn’t just smell pretty — inspired by the stars of Hollywood Boulevard, the cut glass crystal bottle is adorned with glamorous gold accents. As the weather cools, Hollywood Royal could just be the sweet, youthful and lusciously warm fragrance you’ve been looking for. Available in store now at Farmers, selected pharmacies and department stores.

Scents & Sensibility: The Perfume Edition…

Elizabeth Arden – Untold Eau Fraiche

Bright and joyful, Eau Fraiche is a whimsically beautiful fragrance that complements the Untold fragrance collection perfectly.

Eau Fraiche follows the same package architecture as the original Untold, with the addition of an aquamarine hue and iridescent carton. This new scent features accents of crisp Sicilian Lemon, and Juicy Pear. A burst of White Tea and Mandarin. Delicate notes of Freesia and Lily of the Valley. Sleek Vetiver wrapped in White Amber and whispers of soft Musk are wrapped in Cashmere Woods.

Available in store now at all Elizabeth Arden counters. RRP (100ml) $119.

Scents & Sensibility: The Perfume Edition…

Valeur Absolue Confiance
Confiance is the fifth fragrance masterpiece from Valeur Absolue. This new well-being elixir brings that special self-confidence and poise to women through this fabulous new scent.

A recent study conducted by Valeur Absolute showed just how much a lack of confidence can be an obstacle for women. This lack of assurance, even if it’s temporary, makes them act out of character. Aspiring to that famous ‘positive attitude’, which makes life so much easer, they admit to searching for any means or method to counteract this natural self-doubt. This finding was all it took for Valeur Absolue, the brand that has shaped its identity on serenity and greater well-being, to create a fragrance that would offer reassurance and, through its composition, make us invincible.

The Fragrance – a rich and comforting composition with oriental tonalities, inspired by the warm, balsamic and leathery facets of ripe vanilla beans. The Visible Element – orange carnelian keeps negative thoughts at bay, restores concentration and love of life. Valeur Absolue Confiance RRP$ (90ml) $159.

Scents & Sensibility: The Perfume Edition…

Elie Saab – Resort
A fruity floral fragrance with gourmand top notes, Elie Saab’s limited-edition Resort collection 2015 is unabashedly sweet. Created by perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, its notes of fig, mandarin, orange blossom, jasmine, frangipani, cedar and amber are intended to create “a fleeting but intense moment filled with nothing but harmony”. Elie Saab Le Parfum Eau de Toilette Resort Collection 2015. RRP $120 (50ml)

Scents & Sensibility: The Perfume Edition…

Diana Vreeland – Smashingly Brilliant
Created by perfumer Clement Gavarry alongside the grandson of Diana Vreeland, Smashingly Brilliant is the latest in a line of fragrances made in honour of the former US Vogue editor. Zesty citrus notes and aromatic verbena, basil and juniper berries make an instant impression, before giving way to a drydown of woody notes and a suede accord on the skin. Diana Vreeland Smashingly Brilliant Eau de Parfum. RRP $349 (100ml)

The Intriguing ‘Little Ghost’

little ghost new zealand leather goods

People often ask me, in the world of blogging, “what’s the best thing you’ve ever received? What’s the most fun thing you’ve received? What’s your favourite discovery via blogging to date? What’s the worst thing you’ve received that you really didn’t like?” To be honest, that’s not really what it’s all about for me, and in turn I find these questions very hard to answer. Yes, receiving things to preview before anyone else is of course great, and I’m still very excited to discover new fashion, beauty, lifestyle items every day, but that’s not why I’m in the blogging game. I genuinely love writing, I genuinely love discovering and sharing new finds; I receive a number of items every day, and yes, it’s true, I’m one of those bloggers that generally won’t write about things in a negative light, if I don’t like something, I simply don’t write about it (journalism 101, if it doesn’t interest you and you’re not passionate about it, it’s going to be a tenuous task to write about it).

Now, ask me, ‘what’s the most intriguing discovery you’ve made through blogging’ and it’s a whole new ball game! That to me is easier to answer… discovering items, stores, brands, etc, that, if I wasn’t in the blogging game, I might not have discovered so quickly. For example – Junk & Disorderly, Antique Ally, The Bread & Butter Letter, Lindi Kingi, Ribbon On A Bombshell, well, you get the picture; it’s these finds that I cherish the most, especially those that become a never-ending ‘treasure trove’ discovery; which segues nicely into ‘little ghost’…

Behind the products you see online and in-store is the Little Ghost team; a team with a strong shared philosophy and vision. Spearheading this team, and the foundation of Little Ghost’s attitude and spirit is their designer and chief goddess – Amber. With her nurturing, Little Ghost has grown from a seed of an idea that whispered to her one evening many years ago, into a full-blown reality. Little Ghost is carving a reputation as a high-quality provider of accessories that empower you with smart sophistication.

From their packaging to their branding, their story, to their beautiful leather accessories – what’s not to love about Little Ghost. Here are a few of our absolute fave Little Ghost pieces you can expect to find when you visit www.littleghost.co.nz

Beautiful Editorials: Las Muertas

Beautiful Editorials: Las Muertas

Photographer Tim Tadder has created a haunting photo series called ‘Las Muertas.’ Inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead. The skull-painted women pays subtle homage to the festival’s Aztec roots where Mictecacihuatl (a girl who was sacrificed as an infant) the goddess of the underworld, was worshipped.

Tadder’s photos, created with the help of makeup artist Krisztianna and costume designer Julia Reeser, are indeed worthy of worship. The vibrant colors of these Persephones mark the subject as important, the symbolism suggesting something deadly and beautiful– but their faces are casual, indifferent, or curious. They walk the land of the dead as its mistresses, but their relationship with their surroundings is impersonal.

Style Icon Iris Apfel’s Film Debut. Watch The Trailer Here…

Style Icon Iris Apfel's Film Debut - Check Out The Trailer Here…

I’m obsessed with a woman I’ve never met! Its been this way for years. Is it possible to adore someone such as Iris Apfel, despite the fact I’ve never uttered a word to her? The answer is yes! Iris Apfel is one of the most incredible, inspiring, intelligent, simply incredible, women of all time…

MUST SEE: Style Icon Iris Apfel's Film Debut - Check Out The Trailer Here…

When Iris Apfel was a young woman from Queens, New York, starting out in the fashion industry, Frieda Loehmann, founder of the famed department store, took her aside: “She said, ‘You’re not pretty and you’ll never be pretty, but it doesn’t matter. You have something much better. You have style.’ ”

Apfel will be turning 94 this August, but she doesn’t seem to be stepping out of the fashion spotlight anytime soon. Her career took off when she worked as an interior designer for the White House, although she is not supposed to talk about it, according to the documentary trailer. She eventually became a style icon with her wide, thick-rimmed glasses and vast collection of costume jewellery. Despite her impeccable fashion sense, Apfel is not one to judge because “it’s better to be happy then well-dressed.” Don’t you just love her?

MUST SEE: Style Icon Iris Apfel's Film Debut - Check Out The Trailer Here…

Iris is the subject of a new documentary, out next month, by Albert Maysles—who, with his late brother David, directed such classics as Gimme Shelter and Grey Gardens (oh, Grey Gardens; this is one of my favourite doco’s! If you haven’t seen it, you must). Without Apfel, whose idiosyncratic style and Mr. Magoo-size eyewear inspired a 2005–6 exhibition at the Met, we would likely not be seeing the rise of the senior supermodel: Joan Didion for Céline, Charlotte Rampling for Nars, Jessica Lange for Marc Jacobs Beauty, Joni Mitchell for Yves Saint Laurent. Apfel herself is the new face of Kate Spade.

MUST SEE: Style Icon Iris Apfel's Film Debut - Check Out The Trailer Here…

This “rare bird of fashion,” as she is now known, first came to prominence in the 1950s, when she and her husband, Carl—who turned 100 during filming—founded Old World Weavers, a textile company hired by nine presidents for White House restorations. In Iris, we see Apfel mingle with Bruce Weber, Jenna Lyons, and Kanye West, while behind the closed doors of her Park Avenue apartment she quietly grapples with old age. Fashion, she says, never keeps her up at night. “Matters of health and things like that [do]. Things that are really important.”

Check out the trailer here:

I cannot wait to devour this fashion film. After watching the trailer, who’s with me?!

The Art of Peddy Mergui Reimagines Fashionable Brands For Grocery Stores...

What if Nike sold oranges and Apple sold iMilk? Israel-based artist Peddy Mergui has envisioned a series of food packaging, extended from the lines of luxury brands. The exhibition ‘wheat is wheat is wheat’ displays a collection of crafted boxes, containers and cases, each bearing a familiar trademark of a well-known brand. Nike, Tiffany, Gucci and Apple — to name a few — are logos featured on the packs, which are aesthetically described by visual elements and characteristics appropriate to each label; for example, fruits are contained in geometric and angular grey crates, emblematic of the Nike brand.

“The various exhibits combine shapes and images from the world of consumption with concepts from the field of consumer ethics.” Mergui describes “They serve to highlight both the contentious, potentially arbitrary connection that products have to packaging, and the ethically challenging conditions in which designers are asked to operate.”

Using humorous, yet provocative undertones, ‘wheat is wheat is wheat’ will leave you with more questions than answers – particularly on your next trip to the supermarket.

Peddy’s personal experiences — from leaving Morocco as a small child and moving to Israel, to exploring the beauty of Japanese culture as a young adult – play an essential role in his design process desire to challenge the status quo. As both the owner of a brand firm, and a senior professor of design at the Holon Institute of Technology, Peddy has over 20 years of practical industry and academic experience in the world of design and branding. Known for his ability to translate graphic language and visual communication into “rule-breaking” designs and concepts, Peddy has led significant and diverse advertising campaigns as well as a wide variety of projects involving brand building, packaging and product perception.

Sia – Elastic Heart feat. Shia LaBeouf & Maddie Ziegler (Official Video)

Sia - Elastic Heart feat. Shia LaBeouf & Maddie Ziegler (Official Video)

What’s an artist to do when her last music video surpassed 400 million views on YouTube? Well, in the case of Sia, who charmed roughly that many viewers with her clip for “Chandelier,” the answer’s simple: Don’t mess with the formula.

Sia Furler has rereleased her smash hit – Elastic Heart with a stunning revamped music video starring Shia LaBeouf and Maggie Ziegler facing off in a steel cage.

If the mere pairing of the two stars weren’t weird enough, the video progresses into complete anarchy by pitting Ziegler and LaBeouf against each other in a huge birdcage-like structure, where they snarl, contort, crawl, and twirl around each other.

The choreography – and, yes, the slightly disturbing chemistry between the preteen and the 28-year-old actor — is hard to tear one’s eyes from. The video closes with 45 seconds of music-free interaction between Ziegler and LaBeouf that is, again, oddly moving.

It appears the narrative is likely to be a follow on from the story that started with Maddie’s performance in the Chandelier clip.

The official video for “Elastic Heart” directed by Sia and Daniel Askill. Choreographed by Ryan Heffington.

2015’s Hottest Summer Reads – Prepare To Fall In Literary Love…

2015's Hottest Summer Reads - Prepare To Fall In Literary Love…

Whether you’re deciding what to listen to on Podcast, which audio book to download or which ‘hold-in-your-hands’ novel you should read, I’ve got you covered with this summer’s hottest page turners.

So grab your sunscreen, beach chair, a towel and one of these books and prepare to fall in literary love…

PODCAST

Serial – From The Creators of This American Life

2015's Hottest Summer Reads - Prepare To Fall In Literary Love…

It goes without saying (but I’ll say it anyway) the most tuned into podcast of the year has got to be Serial. Here at Gurlinterrupted HQ – we became completely obsessed with this case and waited with bated breath for each new episode to be set live.

Serial is a podcast from the creators of This American Life, and is hosted by Sarah Koenig. Serial tells one story – a true story – over the course of an entire season (all episodes are now available for FREE download).

On January 13, 1999, a girl named Hae Min Lee, a senior at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore County, Maryland, disappeared. A month later, her body turned up in a city park. She’d been strangled. Her 17-year-old ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was arrested for the crime, and within a year, he was convicted and sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison. The case against him was largely based on the story of one witness, Adnan’s friend Jay, who testified that he helped Adnan bury Hae’s body. But Adnan has always maintained he had nothing to do with Hae’s death. Some people believe he’s telling the truth. Many others don’t.

Sarah Koenig, who hosts Serial, first learned about this case more than a year ago. In the months since, she’s been sorting through box after box (after box) of legal documents and investigators’ notes, listening to trial testimony and police interrogations, and talking to everyone she can find who remembers what happened between Adnan Syed and Hae Min Lee fifteen years ago.

AUDIO BOOKS

I feel like I should explain the whole ‘why audio books’ thing.  It’s true, I am an old school, ‘hold in your hands’ book lover. So why download audio books when you could just read the actual book, you know, because otherwise you’re not really reading are you?! Well, since downloading my first audio book, I’ve never had such an enjoyable commute to and from work. I mean heck, it’s not like you can sit in your car and read a book while you’re stuck in traffic now is it? No – that would be not only reckless, but, well, just plain stupid. With audio books I can listen to my book, still concentrate on the road, and later that evening, still cosy up with an actual book when I climb into bed (yup, I’m a two books on the go kinda girl).

With that said – here are my favourite audio books…

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

2015's Hottest Summer Reads - Prepare To Fall In Literary Love…

Marriage can be a real killer.  One of the most critically acclaimed suspense writers of our time, New York Times bestseller Gillian Flynn takes that statement to its darkest place in this ‘unputdownable’ masterpiece about a marriage gone terribly, terribly wrong. The Chicago Tribune proclaimed that her work “draws you in and keeps you reading with the force of a pure but nasty addiction.” Gone Girl’s toxic mix of sharp-edged wit and deliciously chilling prose creates a nerve-fraying thriller.

The Probable Future by Alice Hoffman

2015's Hottest Summer Reads - Prepare To Fall In Literary Love…
Best known for her book (and movie) Practical Magic – Alice Hoffman has published a total a of twenty-three novels and Probably Future is another smash hit novel and brilliantly narrated audio book…

Women of the Sparrow family have unusual gifts. Elinor can detect falsehood. Her daughter, Jenny, can see people’s dreams when they sleep. Granddaughter Stella has a mental window to the future – a future that she might not want to see.

In Alice Hoffman’s latest tour de force, this vivid and intriguing cast of characters confronts a haunting past – and a very current murder – against the evocative backdrop of small-town New England. By turns chilling and enchanting, The Probable Future chronicles the Sparrows’ legacy as young Stella struggles to cope with her disturbing clairvoyance. Her potential to ruin or redeem becomes unbearable when one of her premonitions puts her father in jail, wrongly accused of homicide. Yet this ordeal also leads Stella to the grandmother she was forbidden to meet, and to an historic family home full of talismans from her ancestors.

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

2015's Hottest Summer Reads - Prepare To Fall In Literary Love…Rear Window meets Gone Girl in this exceptional and startling psychological thriller. A debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people’s lives.

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

When a young trooper is shot in the head at the Regiment’s renowned Killing House, Nick Stone is perfectly qualified to investigate the mysterious circumstances more deeply. He has just returned from Moscow — still trying to come to terms with the fact that his girlfriend and baby son are safer there without him — so combines an unrivalled understanding of the Special Forces landscape with a detachment that should allow him to remain in cover.

But less than forty-eight hours later, a second death catapults him back into the firing line — into the telescopic sights of an unknown assassin bent on protecting a secret that could strike at the heart of the establishment that Stone has, in his maverick fashion, spent most of his life fighting to protect. And now the clock is ticking…

The Disreputable History Of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart

2015's Hottest Summer Reads - Prepare To Fall In Literary Love…

Frankie Landau-Banks at age 14: A mildly geeky girl attending a highly competitive boarding school.

Frankie Landau-Banks at age 15: A knockout figure. A sharp tongue. A chip on her shoulder. And a gorgeous new senior boyfriend: the supremely goofy, word-obsessed Matthew Livingston.

Frankie Laundau-Banks at age 16: No longer the kind of girl to take “no” for an answer. Especially when “no” means she’s excluded from her boyfriend’s all-male secret society. Not when her ex boyfriend shows up in the strangest of places. Not when she knows she’s smarter than any of them. When she knows Matthew’s lying to her. And when there are so many, many pranks to be done.

Possibly a criminal mastermind. This is the story of how she got that way…
