GLAMDALS – Glamour For Your Feet!

Sandra Castle’s love affair with shoes started as a young child. Hailing from Auckland’s Southern Suburbs, Sandra; the  over the top, ‘epitome of fabulous’ woman behind the ‘GLAMDALS’ brand was always underwhelmed by the selection of shoes on offer during her formative years. “When I started school my parents took me shoe shopping for something appropriate, but I didn’t like anything on offer” recounts Sandy, “however on my first day I found what I was looking for in the school cloakroom, promptly put them on and wore them home, not sparing a thought for the poor child left to walk home in bare feet “she laughs loudly.

Fast forward 40 years ………. During a well-deserved six-week break to Thailand to revive her then flailing creative juices, Sandra was relaxing on a poolside lounger (a la Kate Moss) when the idea for GLAMDALS came to her. Having kicked off her sensible poolside footwear, she lamented at how damn uninspiring they were. “I wanted a fun, comfortable, casual pair of footwear, which screamed sexy and glamorous as well! Something you could wear at home, out shopping, to the beach, to a resort, dinner, a pair of glitzy wee gems that you could wear anywhere!”

After much research, many samples and countless bottles of wine, Sandra is thrilled to launch GLAMDALS, a new range of glamorous attire for your feet for fabulous women everywhere. Her first summer 2012 collection boasts eight different styles and is available to order now!!

With names like ‘Heartbreaker’, ‘Moves Like Jagger’, ‘Paint It Black’ and ‘A Kiss From A Rose’ – I couldn’t resist………

City Designers Market

It’s been a while since I visited the City Designers Market (CDM) and to be honest, I have no idea why or how I forgot about this little gem!  This is such a great market because; (A) it’s supporting local designers – in fact, more times than not, the actual designers themselves are there, (B) Location – perfect for grabbing a coffee, parking up on the bench seats in Freyberg Square and ‘people watching’ (a guilty favourite pleasure) after you’ve perused all the designer goodies at CDM, (C) you can get genuine bargains on fab designer garments (and not just any ol designers either – well established, amazing and creative designers)!  The City Designers Market is a boutique clothing market above High St, in the heart of Auckland’s CBD. A collective effort from six designers: Flox, Harriett Falvey, Hannah Morgan, Misty Lang, Ribbon on a Bombshell and Selector clothing; located at 1 Freyberg Place, High Street, Auckland.

Now, here’s the thing….I’ve yet to leave this sassy little indoor market without purchasing something (and when I say ‘purchasing something’, in reality I mean ‘purchasing at least 2 or 3 items of clothing’) so don’t say I didn’t warn you!!

I did not envy the judging panel, consisting of New Zealand’s top fashion and export industry leaders such as: Kate Sylvester, Erica Crawford of Kim Crawford Wines, Carolyn Enting of Mindfood, Megan Wildermoth of DHL Express and Paul Blomfield of FINZ. Gold Collar Necklace – DIY Fashion Collar

I’m fairly certain no one has overlooked the huge trend that is ‘Embellished Collars’.  They’re everywhere! And no doubt they’ll be here for at least another season. But to be honest – I’m a little over all the same ones I’m seeing in every store.  So, in my search for a new DIY fashion project; and to create something a little more subtle than the average embellished collar, I came across the perfect DIY article on http://www.harpersbazaar.com.au – A DELICATE CHAIN COLLAR – and thought I would share it with all of you.  I love the simplicity of this and it looks amazing worn over a top (especially something very simple and not too busy) yet looks just as good worn as a necklace directly against your skin.

Here’s what you’ll need:
– Approx. 1 metre of delicate gold chain (or silver if you prefer)
– 1 lobster clasp
– 5 gold jump rings
– Beading pliers (admittedly – I just used plain old pliers
– Scissors
– Blue tack

STEPS:

  • Cut your chain into 3 pieces. Cut one piece at around 50cm. Cut the other two pieces at around 25cm.
  • Creating the base of the necklace. Taking the longest (50cm) piece – attach a jump ring to one end and the lobster clasp to the other.
  • At the very centre of this 50cm chain – attach a jump ring. Then attach the two 25cm pieces of chain to this centre jump ring.
  • Put the necklace on. Looking in a mirror, hold up the ends of the two pieces of 25cm chain to see where you think the collar parts of chain should sit. This isn’t an exact science – just move the chains to the shape that you like the best. HANDY HINT: Put 2 little dots of blue tack on the ends of these chains before you hold them up to determine the shape, so that you can use the blue tack to mark where on the base of the necklace you want to attach the chains)
  • Remove the necklace and attach these remaining ends of chain with jump rings at the spot on the necklace that you marked with blue tack, to create the collar shape.

Voila – you’re done!! This is a really easy DIY project, resulting in a fresh spin on the embellished collar.  I sourced my items from Spotlight for next to nothing, however you could also check out Ikes/Geoffs Emporium as an alternative.

I Hope this inspires you to give the this DIY project a whirl.

Boohoo Boutique Collection

BOUTIQUE GLAM!!!  You know how much I love boohoo.com, so news of an exclusive limited range, aptly named BOOHOO BOUTIQUE COLLECTION, launching online TODAY, got me super excited.

Dark romance signifies the direction for the collection with jackets and bustier dresses featuring strong feminine silhouettes, embellished with rich gold brocade and lavish rivet detailing. Black PU and mesh provide definition and texture, whilst metallic highlights, on trousers and jackets, add a directional opulence for winter.

The Boutique Lexie Embroidered Stud Side Straps Tutu Dress is ‘to die’.  This has been added to my ‘boohoo bucket list’ directly under the Lucia Black Embossed Studded Shopper – I am so in love with this bag! (obsessed is probably more accurate).

Focused on marrying a hardened rock edge with a gothic romanticism, boohoo boutique gives the everyday boohoo girl a dramatic alter ego for the new season. Impactful leather look pencil skirts and trousers sit alongside delicate chiffon and lace separates, giving the first boohoo boutique collection a wistful yet uncompromising outlook.

Glassons – Upsizing Your Combo!

I love Glassons (The House of G/Glambezi/Coco Avant Glassons) at the best of times.  I mean they have amazing on-trend and totally affordable fashion and quite honestly, their gear is so good that most of the time there really is no need to spend hundreds of dollars on an item that is exactly the same at Glassons for half the price.  Yes, I love my ‘high street’ labels as much as the next person and yes – I buy these too, but when it comes to real ‘on-trend’ pieces, that are only going to be around for 1 season, I’m definitely going to head to The House of G!

It wasn’t until this morning, whilst deciding what to wear to a Hair & Beauty Media Launch, that I realised just how obsessive I’ve become with Glassons; and in particular their patterned, neon and floral pants!  This is what I found when I opened my wardrobe – the realisation that I am truly OCD for the House of G.

My justification………  Each of these cost me between $20 – $50.  Such a bargain!!  Sure, the whole point in not spending so much money is that you’re saving right?  Well, I tend to look at it like ‘up-sizing my combo’.  If a pair of pants that I love is only $29 and there are several other pairs that I’m also lusting over, you bet your Aston Martin I’m gonna grab another pair.  I then go down the path of ‘well if I were in any other store each pair would be about $100 and I can get like 3 pairs at Glassons for that’!  So thanks House of G, youre feeding my OCD, upsizing my combo; and I’M LOVIN IT!!

You can get most of these bad boys in-store now, or online (with free shipping!!) by clicking on the attached link: http://www.glassons.com/

Enjoy your fashion meal deal at Glassons!

The New Zealand Fashion Museum Presents: HOME SEWN

Last week, in between running to and from various New Zealand Fashion Week Runway Shows, I attended the Home Sewn Pop-up Exhibition and Book Launch held at the Nathan Gallery, 40 Customs St East, Britomart.  The Home Sewn exhibition is an amazing visual record of original home sewn fashion garments from the archives of women’s wardrobes from all around New Zealand with connections to New Zealand designers before they embarked on their fashion careers, plus sketches, illustrations, patterns, and the tools of home sewing.   The present is also featured at the exhibition with an outstanding collection of designs from young designers of fashion today.

The exhibition is also the launch pad for the New Zealand Fashion Museum’s latest book, HOME SEWN.   This is a stunning compendium of ten patterns from the luminaries of the fashion world in New Zealand, such as Company of Strangers, Cybèle, Katie-maree Cole, Lela Jacobs, Papercut, Starfish, TK Store, twenty-seven names, Vaughan Geeson and WORLD.  It profiles each designer’s personal experience along with sharing a pattern from one of their stunning collections and step by step instructions on how to make them. HOME SEWN provides an overview of our home sewing history by curator Doris de Pont, including a range of personal stories, beautifully illustrated with photographs by  Stephen Tilley.  Home Sewn RRP $45.

It’s well worth making the time to go along to the exhibition which is open now and runs through until 26 September, 10am – 5pm daily, Monday to Saturday (Sunday 11am – 4pm).  Entry is free; however a donation on entry is welcome.  To see more information on all the creative workshops they are running over the next couple of weeks, click on the attached link: www.fashionmuseum.org.nz or check out their facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/New-Zealand-Fashion-Museum/126614904023061?sk=events
