DON’T vote for me…

This is officially the strangest post I’ve ever written, and I realise this is going to be a little controversial (some are not going to like the stance I’ve taken, some will hopefully respect it) however I do think that I need to explain why I DON’T want you to ‘vote for me’ and why I made the decision over the weekend to revoke my acceptance of a certain beauty blog award nomination.  I didn’t intend to actually write about why I took myself out of the running, however I have had an overwhelming amount of emails and messages asking why the website now states ‘gurlinterrupted was removed at the nominees request’. If you never knew anything about the award, then feel free to click out of this post now, as it will probably bore the heck outta you.   So, here goes…

Last week (Thursday or Friday I think it was), I was informed that I had received nominations for the “Beauty Review Best Beauty Blog Awards”, and was asked if I would accept the nominations and thus be a part of the competition to vie for the award.  Admittedly, I was at first flattered and quickly (clearly too quickly, without reading all the details) answered in the affirmative that I would indeed accept the nomination and was excited to be a part of it.  I then received an email saying that a voting system would be in put in place and a number of ’rounds’ would ensue to see who came out on top, and so, that’s what I did – I asked for your vote and that was that.

Cue forward a day and I was off to Blogcademy – an intense two-day course, run by three of the worlds biggest names in blogging (the course was amazing by the way!).  It was at Blogcademy that I was made to take a really good look at who I am as a “fashion, beauty, lifestyle blogger” – what my brand (gurlinterrupted) means to me, what my values are, what my point of difference is and what I need to do to accomplish everything I want to with my blog!  In short, I now know exactly where I want my brand to go, what my goals are and how to reach those goals, the new direction I will be taking, and most importantly, what I value and stand for, and of course, not compromising those values.  I spoke to the teachers at Blogcademy, and to several fellow bloggers about the beauty award I had just been nominated for.  I said I was excited, however felt weird about having to ask for votes for the first round, but it was all part of the process.  I was asked by the teachers “given that Gurlinterrupted isn’t solely a beauty blog, you cover fashion and lifestyle as well – are you worried you’ll potentially being pigeonholed?” Admittedly, that hadn’t crossed my mind. The real doubt around the award came when they asked “who’s on the judging panel, when does the judging take place, and what criteria did you have to meet?”.  I realised I had no idea at what stage any of this would take place.  When I returned home from Blogcademy on Saturday night I re-read the email only to find that in actual fact, the entire process was based on ‘voting and voting alone’. This meant that in essence there was actually no kudos (in my personal opinion) behind this award, and that it didn’t actually recognise what I felt the award was stating e.g. ‘Best Beauty Blogger’.  It was solely going to be based on how many votes I could wrangle up and in turn this would mean constantly asking friends, acquaintances, colleagues e.g. you guys reading this right now, to go and vote for me to win an award that actually doesn’t recognise what I want to be recognised for – my blog, my writing skills, my content, my qualification in makeup artistry, my background in beauty writing, actually it had nothing to do with my content at all.

Throughout day two of Blogcademy, the more I thought about it, the more I felt uncomfortable about having my name/my brand attached to an award process, that for me personally, wasn’t what I wanted to be recognised for e.g. ‘being capable of getting the most votes’.  The fact I kept hearing things like ‘only do and write about what you’re passionate about’, and ‘if your gut-feeling is that somethings not quite right, it probably ISN’T right’ (for a moment there I thought, sh*t these girls aren’t teachers, they’re blo*dy mind-readers and they’re directing all these messages at me ha ha ha). Well that was it for me, I got home Sunday night and sent an email stating that I would like to revoke my acceptance of the nomination and asked that they remove Gurlinterrupted from the competition.

I do feel like I need to state that no fault lies with the beautyreview website – I still think it’s a great website, as well as a great source of information!  And had I of read the entire email that informed me of the nomination, I would have known from the get-go how the whole process was going to play out, and in turn I wouldn’t have accepted the nomination.  I also don’t want to offend anyone still involved in the competition – in fact I wish everyone still in the running all the best – the fact of the matter is, it just wasn’t right for me!

Aaaaaanyway – Sorry for the ramble – this turned out to be a novel rather than a simple explanation – it’s just that I couldn’t reply to all the messages individually that asked why I had taken myself out of the running, yet I felt I did owe everyone an explanation given you all took the time out of your day to vote for me (which I truly appreciate), you shared my ‘vote for me’ post, and wrote gorgeous, positive messages urging your friends to vote too, and I want to thank everyone that got behind me, especially those that nominated me in the first place. You’re all amazing!!

Essie – Coveted, loved and adored…

The Queen loves the shade Ballet Slippers and Kate Middleton chose to wear Allure to her nuptials to Prince William last year. Lady Gaga paired Merino Cool with her infamous meat dress and Angelina Jolie adores Mademoiselle.

Never before has a nail polish brand gained such a celebrity following. Loved by A-listers worldwide, essie has been adorning nails for more than 30 years and now it’s available to even more New Zealand women.

Yesterday media were invited to celebrate and experience the NEW and IMPROVED essie nail formula first hand…

Held in the beautiful surroundings of The Pavillion in Kohimaramara, guests mingled and sipped on mocktails (and perhaps a cocktail or two) before walking the gardens of The Pavillion, overlooking the water, to peruse all the stunning hues of essie’s vast colour range. And before the day came to an end everyone received a ‘nail makeover’ from a lineup of manicurists with essie nail colour and care products at the ready (with each guest receiving a selection of colours matched to their personal style – how cool is that).

So, what’s new with the already ‘world-famous’ essie?  L’Oréal has relaunched the essie nail brand with a larger range of shades and care products, with wider distribution, but most importantly – essie has a new and improved, thicker formula combined with a wider paddle brush that ensures ease of use and an even, smooth finish (less expensive salon visits, more at-home manicures – that’s what we like to hear!).

With 100 colour shades from neutrals to pinks, corals to reds and greens to blues, there’s a perfect essie shade for everyone.  And now, given the essie re-launch in New Zealand, the internationally renowned brand has become even more accessible to every kiwi woman.

Check out a few of the highlights from the day, along with proof that even before essie launched their ‘new and improved’ formula, I was already a huge fan, with a shot of some of my favourite essie colours I’ve been donning for years now – because after all, nails are the best accessory…

After recently announcing Marilyn Monroe as the new face of Chanel No. 5, the French fashion house has now unveiled the new ad campaign which uses actual footage of Miss Monroe.  The commercial features an audio recording of a 1960 interview between Georges Belmont, who at the time was the editor of Marie Claire, and Monroe, in which she famously stated that she wore nothing but Chanel No. 5 to bed.  Monroe states “You know, they ask me questions. Just an example: ‘What do you wear to bed ? A pajama top? The bottoms of the pajamas? A nightgown?’ So I said, ‘Chanel No. 5,’ because it’s the truth… And yet, I don’t want to say ‘nude.’ But it’s the truth!”.

Both the print campaign and TV commercial are in black and white  and Chanel has released three exclusive images featuring Marilyn with the perfume, however there’s still no confirmation as to which will be used throughout the actual campaign.

Beautiful Editorials: Disturbia…

Yes, as macabre as it may seem, I still consider this worthy of a place amongst my collection of ‘beautiful editorials’.  Maybe it’s because I’m a little disturbed myself (I kid!), who knows, but I find this entire fashion/beauty edit intriguing, mesmerising and somehow – beautiful!  The makeup artistry is perfection and the style edit still looks amazing, even if they are of the undead variety, because hey – everyone needs a little mystery and magic in their lives!

Dazed & Confused has dedicated their entire November issue to the Dark Arts. Photographer Jeff Bark and fashion director Robbie Spencer created what are possibly the chicest zombies in history in their editorial entitled “Disturbia”.  Models wear a selection of F/W 2013-14′s best 1950s-esque garments from Prada, Dior, Nina Ricci, and others.

Last week I received the Limited Edition Shiseido Eye Color Bar – an eyeshadow palette designed for Shiseido by British makeup artist Dick Page.  The career of British make-up artist Dick Page is one of considerable accomplishment. His technical skill and painter’s eye for colour, texture, and detail have firmly established his reputation as an industry leader. He has achieved widespread recognition for his editorial and advertising work, as well as for his more than ten years’ experience on runway shows worldwide.  So as you can see from his CV (which I’ve culled down considerably for this post), he’s kind of a big deal, and his eye for colour certainly shines through with this beautiful “Cocktail bar” of colours!

Inspired by a combination of colourful cocktails, Page used the Shiseido Eye Color Bar to create hundreds of looks on the models during New York Fashion Week. Just as you would when creating a cocktail, Page blended & layered colours to create a variety of new cocktail colours, and also let the colours tell their own story by applying the bright beautiful hues just as they are, straight from the palette.

The colours are absolutely stunning – an array of delicious cocktail colours that are highly pigmented and when applied give 100% colour payoff.  Packaged in a chic slim portable case with a handy mirror and featuring a Camellia flower – the Limited Edition Eye Color Bar by Shiseido is a must-have palette for summer! I’m absolutely loving it, and thought it was worth sharing, as it really does have the perfect balance of colours. With names such as Champagne, Noisette, Menthe, Parfait Amour, Liquorice, Cassis, Curacao, Cafe and Soda, the palette contains a fabulous array of earthy tones, highlighters and bright bold, eye-popping hues.

Want To Achieve A Flawless Foundation Look In Under A Minute?

Revlon, revlon nz, revlon Nearly Naked Mineral Foundation, revlon nz nearly naked, nearly naked, Revlon New Zealand, beauty blog nz, fashion blog nz, style blog nz, beauty media nz, fashion media nz, angie fredatovich, gurlinterrupted, fashion, beauty

If you’re after a quick, no-fuss, easy-to-apply, flawless foundation routine, you’re gonna love Revlon’s new Nearly Naked Mineral Foundation!

When I first saw the Nearly Naked Mineral Foundation I had pretty much made up my mind that I was not going to like it!  I know that’s ridiculous, given I hadn’t even tried it, but I didn’t realise it was a loose powder form foundation, for some reason I thought it was pressed when I saw it online.

My background as a makeup artist has embedded in me that the best bet for a flawless foundation look is to use liquid foundation, and in summer – a BB Cream would be my next choice for a lighter coverage, and thus I just couldn’t see the Nearly Naked Mineral Powder working.  So, in my haste to try the product and get it over and done with, I grabbed my kabuki brush, shook some of the product into the lid, dipped the brush into the product, and swept the product over my face in literally under minute, not even caring to try to apply It carefully.

Aaaaand here’s where I eat humble pie!  I took no care to apply it – I hardly even glanced up at the mirror, and finished the application in about 30 seconds.   When I did look in the mirror, I was blown away.  I had a light, flawless cover (that of say BB Cream, sans the sheen) and my face looked COMPLETELY blemish-free.  I applied another layer, and I had a full-cover, flawless foundation look!

What I really love about the Revlon Nearly Naked Mineral Foundation is that you can have very subtle, light coverage which looks like you are wearing no makeup whatsoever, just blessed with naturally amazing blemish-free skin (I guess that’s where the ‘naked’ part of the name came in) or you can simply apply two or three more coats to build up the product to a coverage level of your choice – and still in under a minute!

The Nearly Naked Foundation is available in five shades and I got the shade ‘medium’ which is the perfect match for my skin tone.  This is actually one of the few foundation products where I haven’t had to mix two shades together to achieve the correct colour, which is fab!  If you have olive skin this shade will be PERFECT for you.

I’m now SUPER keen to try out the ‘Nearly Naked’ liquid foundation and pressed powder!!

Pinterest is one of the fastest growing social networks online and currently is the third largest network behind Facebook and Twitter. For the first time in New Zealand, this virtual pinboard- style, photo-sharing site will become a virtual reality, allowing kiwis to discover, create and share everything they could want for the summer holidays on image boards, at The Base’s ‘My Real Life Pinterest’ interactive event.

“We are excited to launch My Real Life Pinterest for the first time in New Zealand, right here at The Base and engage with our public in a way that hasn’t been done before,” says Angela Young, marketing manager at The Base.

To truly celebrate the festive season, shoppers will be invited to pin down their summer Christmas wish list, make their very own larger-than-life pinboard inside the shopping complex and every Pinterest board created will give each shopper the chance to take home what they have pinned.

This one-off event is open to all shoppers and fashion enthusiasts around the country, with the challenge to pin down their summer holiday’s wish list in just 5 minutes.

Public can choose to pin the latest summer fashion, technology, homewear and other ‘must-haves’ from a large range of retailers current season collections.

‘My Real Life Pinterest’ will be a hybrid of real-time and online social media interaction, including instant photo sharing of the Pinterest boards created by New Zealand public.

‘My Real Life Pinterest’ will launch on Friday 15 November from 10 – 6pm and Saturday 16 November from 10 – 6pm. More information on New Zealand’s first real life Pinterest created at The Base, will be available soon on www.pinterest.com/thebaseshopping, www.the-base.co.nz and http://www.te-awa.co.nz.

The Base:
The Base Shopping Centre located in Te Rapa, on the northern entry to Hamilton City, is the flagship development for Tainui Group Holding’s and is New Zealand’s largest and most innovative retail and leisure day-out destination. As New Zealand’s only hybrid shopping complex, this award-winning centre is comprised of 190 stores, 3000 free carparks, 34 food outlets and 82,000 square metres of net lettable area.

Prepare to Pin…
