Altered Art: David Irvine Turns Thrift Store Art Into Pop Culture

Altered Art: David Irvine Turns Thrift Store Art Into Pop Culture

Artist David Irvine takes what would be your average, run-of-the-mill piece of thrift store art and turns it into a pop culture masterpiece. Because let’s face it: a quaint cottage home is always better when Jason Voorhees is standing in front of it.

Irvine adds characters and elements from movies, illustrations and TV shows into his ‘Re-Directed Art’, as he calls it. His bizarre paintings depict from Star Wars characters wondering inside yards to Godzilla attacking Venice.

Altered Art: David Irvine Turns Thrift Store Art Into Pop Culture

Irvine runs an art store called Gnarled Branch via which sells his unique creations. His obsession with pop culture and its characters is obvious on his altered works. The artist chooses cheap paintings as his artistic field and illustrates them with surrealistic scenes taken from pop traditions.

Even though these images are a product of contradictory patterns, Irvine always makes sure to leave the original signature clear, creating funny connections between the background and the added characters.

The Art of Peddy Mergui Reimagines Fashionable Brands For Grocery Stores…

The Art of Peddy Mergui Reimagines Fashionable Brands For Grocery Stores...

What if Nike sold oranges and Apple sold iMilk? Israel-based artist Peddy Mergui has envisioned a series of food packaging, extended from the lines of luxury brands. The exhibition ‘wheat is wheat is wheat’ displays a collection of crafted boxes, containers and cases, each bearing a familiar trademark of a well-known brand. Nike, Tiffany, Gucci and Apple — to name a few — are logos featured on the packs, which are aesthetically described by visual elements and characteristics appropriate to each label; for example, fruits are contained in geometric and angular grey crates, emblematic of the Nike brand.

“The various exhibits combine shapes and images from the world of consumption with concepts from the field of consumer ethics.” Mergui describes “They serve to highlight both the contentious, potentially arbitrary connection that products have to packaging, and the ethically challenging conditions in which designers are asked to operate.”

Using humorous, yet provocative undertones, ‘wheat is wheat is wheat’ will leave you with more questions than answers – particularly on your next trip to the supermarket.

Peddy’s personal experiences — from leaving Morocco as a small child and moving to Israel, to exploring the beauty of Japanese culture as a young adult – play an essential role in his design process desire to challenge the status quo. As both the owner of a brand firm, and a senior professor of design at the Holon Institute of Technology, Peddy has over 20 years of practical industry and academic experience in the world of design and branding. Known for his ability to translate graphic language and visual communication into “rule-breaking” designs and concepts, Peddy has led significant and diverse advertising campaigns as well as a wide variety of projects involving brand building, packaging and product perception.

Experiencing Armageddon in New Zealand – The #Awesomenessness

Experiencing Armageddon in New Zealand - AKA #Awesomenessness

The NZ Armageddon Expo kicked off on Friday and we headed along to see what the fuss is all about. Now, we think it’s probably best to admit right up front, that this is something that is WAY outside the realm of the type of event we would normally cover, but hey, it’s all about stepping outside your comfort zone, right? Let’s just say, thank goodness our photographer knew her pop culture, because we definitely needed to ask her a million questions to find out who was who in the world of sci-fi; as people dressed in cosplay outfits had our minds spinning, as we wracked our brains trying to work out who they were supposed to be in their elaborate outfits’ (apparently it’s ‘totes inapropes’ to ask someone in cosplay, who they’re meant to be).

Overrun with sci-fi, movie and comic fans, gamers and the just plain curious (curious – yes that’s us) Armageddon features entertainment, mind-altering exhibits, comics, anime, TV & movie celebrities, comic and voice artists, massive gaming stands and much, much more! The expo attracted 30,000 people yesterday and it’s still running today and tomorrow, expecting around 50,000 people through the doors in total.

Admittedly, we were at first a little hesitant and unsure of what to expect, and of course, worried about whether we would ‘stick out like a fashionable sore thumb’ in our non-cosplay everyday wear, but we actually walked out of the expo (6 hours after arriving) elated we went along, and genuinely blown away with the effort in which fans of Armageddon, put into their outfits.

We met a few of this year’s headline celebs, including Richard Dean Anderson (he’ll always be MacGyver to us), David Hewlett, DJ Quall and Doctor Who’s – Jenna Coleman, to name just a few. But we also met a tonne of die-hard cosplay fans. Check out our favourite costumes, characters and highlights from Armageddon…

Watch All The Highlights From “10 DAYS OF FASHION IN THE CITY” Right Here…

10 days of fashion in the city 2014

One of New Zealand’s hottest events – 10 Days of Fashion in the City, has officially wrapped up for 2014 (yes I hear makeup artists and stylists breathe a sigh of relief too!).  Events such as The Height of Fashion (a lunch and fashion show with New Zealand designers) and New Zealand’s Longest Catwalk (presented by Schwarzkopf) were just a couple of the attractions that showcased New Zealand’s finest, in Auckland’s Heart of the City.

One of the ’10 Days of Fashion in the City’ standouts has to be New Zealand’s Longest Catwalk (styled by none other than NZ’s hottest stylist – Kylie Cooke) where over 4,000 people watched as traffic came to a standstill and designer and streetwear dominated Auckland’s Queen St. The record-breaking golden mile was style central as the latest looks were brought to spectators on a 125 meter long stretch of runway.

If you missed all this fabulousness (yes, fabulousness is now a word!) you can check out all the highlights from ’10 Days of Fashion in the City’ right here…

The Experience Of A Lifetime With Brancott Estate….

Frank Yukich Brancott Estate

Last week I was flown to the stunning Brancott Estate Heritage Centre located in Marlborough (New Zealand’s wine region) and it’s there that I had the experience of a lifetime…

Brancott Vineyard in full flourishIf there is one location in New Zealand that I would say is an absolute MUST VISIT, it’s Brancott Estate vineyard in Marlborough.  Not only did I reach a whole new level of appreciation for New Zealand’s pioneers of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, I encountered things that I would never have experienced anywhere else in the world!  Today, Brancott Estate’s Heritage Centre has become a must on tourist itineraries (1.5 million visitors frequent the Marlborough region annually). It features a tasteful restaurant, retail store, tasting rooms, wine education facility and even a theatre. In fact, proving just how special this magical location is, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II made a visit to the vineyard in 1990, at which time she ceremonially planted a vine with a specially made spade and, following ancient tradition, poured sparkling wine over the new vine. I’m fairly certain there will be no other vineyard in New Zealand that has been graced with the Queen’s presence!

My day was spent touring the palatial Brancott Vineyard, wine tasting the new Fumé Blanc with Brancott Estate Chief Winemaker – Patrick Materman (which even included hand-picking some of the new vintage grapes – although admittedly their professionals in the vines made me look like a total rookie), lunch at the Brancott Estate Heritage Centre (you may have seen this fabulous venue when it was featured on The Great Food Race) and the day concluded with a visit to their Falcon aviary.

With a rich and deep history, the Brancott Estate Heritage Centre (located at Brancott Vineyard) offers a rare opportunity for wine lovers and novices to appreciate first-hand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc’s humble beginnings.  In particular the Brancott Estate Heritage Centre provides a platform to honour the location of the original Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc vines planted in 1975, and the success of the varietal that has gone on to become the world’s favourite New Zealand style wine.  Set in the breathtakingly beautiful home of the original Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, the Brancott Estate Heritage Centre opened in 2011 and boasts a cellar door, wine tasting facilities, retail displays, an audio-visual room, a private meeting or dining area featuring the latest technology (the facilities are state-of-the-art), an indoor restaurant as well as an external dining terrace (a little tip – book in advance for the restaurant because let me tell you from experience, when lunchtime hits, this place gets jam-packed!). The Brancott Estate Heritage Centre offers an unrivalled view of this world-famous wine region.

It was here at the Heritage Centre that I first discovered Brancott Estate’s new Special Reserve Marlborough Fumé Blanc – a new expression of the classic Sauvignon Blanc.  The subtle use of French oak during fermentation imparts a distinctive smoky flavour that gives Fumé Blanc its name (Fumé Blanc translates to ‘white smoke).  The result is a wine that shares many characteristics of a barrel-matured Chardonnay but still retains the fresh vibrancy of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Brancott Estate’s new Fumé Blanc is a stunning new varietal that will appeal to both Sauvignon and Chardonnay drinkers alike.

Just one of the many wonderful ways that Brancott Estate gives back is through the Marlborough Falcon Trust. This trust was established in 2009 and is supported by Wine Marlborough in regards to promotion of the trust, but it’s Brancott Estate that is the major sponsor of the Marlborough Falcon Trust.  $1 from every bottle sold in New Zealand from the Brancott Estate Living Land Series range is donated back to the Marlborough Falcon Trust, and it’s this money that has helped to build the breeding aviary located at Brancott Estate, as well as fund further educational programmes.  Through the support of Brancott Estate, educational programmes and promotional events, the Marlborough Falcon Trust hopes to raise the awareness of the plight of the Falcon.  It was onsite at Brancott Estate that I got to experience for the first time in my life, hand feeding one of the amazing Falcons named Fern.  A seriously surreal experience and I for one will be a huge supporter of the trust going forward (admittedly this will no doubt be via several purchases from the Brancott Estate Living Land Series). You can read more about the Falcon Trust here: www.brancottestate.com/living-land/new-zealand-falcon.

The location highlights the beauty of the iconic Marlborough landscape, and celebrates the home of the original Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc plantings. Their story began in Marlborough, New Zealand with a bold idea to plant the first Sauvignon Blanc vines where no one thought it possible, creating a
world-famous wine region, that has now become one of New Zealand’s biggest tourist attractions.  To find out more about all that Brancott Estate has to offer, head to www.brancottestate.com
