Kurt Counsell of Mod’s Hair Salon – Ponsonby

Meet Kurt Counsell – The other man in my life.  Hairdresser extraordinaire based at ‘Mod’s Hair PARIS’ Salon on Ponsonby Rd.  For those that follow my blog, you will already be fully aware of just how much I adore Kurt and Mod’s Hair Salon’ AND, so that you too can experience just how fabulous Mod’s are – they have gifted me with an amazing GIVEAWAY for my followers valued at $400!!  Read on to find out more about Kurt, Mod’s Hair Salon and how you can WIN a fabulous hair and nail package for you and your bestie!!

Kurt, tell us a little about yourself, the road you travelled that bought you to being a hairdresser and why Mod’s in particular?
Many years ago, when I was a chef, a good friend of mine owned a hair salon. I would often whip up a fab lunch and take it over to her in the salon and spend most of my breaks with her. The more time I spent there, the more I realised I wanted to be ‘in the industry’. So I gradually immersed myself in the salon world by doing some general admin, answering phones, washing hair, etc. in her salon. Eventually she recommended I enrol myself on a hairdressing course. So that’s exactly what I did. Based in Christchurch, I was juggling my full-time hairdressing course, with 2 part-time jobs until, 9 months later, I came out at the other end ready to take on the world of hairdressing. I was offered a full-time role at a Christchurch salon and this is really where I got my grounding in hairdressing. I was so lucky to be based in that salon as I learnt and absorbed so much from those hairdressers. They were true old-school hairdressers, just an amazing talented team who taught me everything I needed to know to get a good solid understanding of hairdressing, things you could never learn solely from completing a hairdressing course, in fact I definitely learned more from hands-on experience. After the earthquakes hit, for obvious reasons I made the move to Auckland and hunted down Mod’s. I knew I wanted to work at Mod’s as I used to go to them in Christchurch to get my hair done by a friend that worked there. I was completely obsessed with the amazing techniques they used, of which I learnt were unique to French hairdressers and thus, it’s where I knew I wanted to be – at Mod’s!

How long have you been with Mod’s
2 years and I still absolutely love it.

What inspires you to come to work and do what you do every day?
I love hair so much – like I actually love what I do and I love surprising people with new and exciting concepts.  It’s not just the artistic creative side of it – it’s the scientific element that comes with hairdressing, you need that scientific understanding, mixed in with a whole lot of creative juice. I love beautiful natural looking hair and the people who do it best are the French (and of corse Mod’s).

Best brand in hair products?
Mod’s of course! We do our own Mod’s line of hair products, so obviously that’s my first brand of choice. The Mod’s range has something for everyone and contains a lot of natural ingredients. In particular, I’m a huge fan of Mod’s GINKO ENERGETICUM – it stimulates the blood flow to your scalp, which keeps the follicle healthy and in turn, promotes hair growth. Now if we are talking specifically ‘hair care’ brands, I would also have to say Kerastase is one of THE best hair care brands.

Number one ‘hair look’ when you don’t have long and want to create a great no fuss hairdo?
I love a topknot! Literally anyone can do it (well obviously not someone with a pixie-cut). I would always opt for a more casual topknot as opposed to the ‘tight ballet bun look’. To accomplish the ideal topknot I’d use a great ‘dust powder’, scoop all your hair up, without using a brush (this creates a more casual look), pop in a hair tie and create your knot. This is a beautiful effortless look. Finish with a red lip and killer heels and you’re good to go.

You have 10 seconds before you have to grab your keys and rush out the door – which hair product do you reach for?
L’Oreal Dust Powder! Reason being, I have fine flyaway hair. With L’Oreal Dust Powder, I can just brush it through and it stays in place all day – no build-up of product and no irritants, which I find when using other dust powders.

You’re a very fashion-forward guy (if I was a guy I’d totally dress like you) – where do you draw your fashion inspiration from?
I love wearing black! Black is the new black as far as I’m concerned. In saying that, I also love statement pieces. Whether it’s a bow tie or necklace; anything different and quirky equals the perfect statement piece. I’ll take snippets from everywhere – I might see something on someone and think “yeah I like that look, but I’d change it up slightly by putting my own twist on it”. I love vintage mixed with street style, and comfort is essential! In this industry you can’t afford to get it wrong, comfort is key and I’ve worn fashion over comfort before – never again!

You’ve built up such a strong following and Mod’s has such a great reputation. What do you think it is that Mod’s does differently to accomplish this?
Mod’s French heritage. French techniques that other hairdressers just don’t know, nor do. We are the kings of balayage!

I’m going on a ‘vacay’ and have to pack light – what are the ‘must haves’ that you would recommend I take with me? (I need lots of room for shoes, so space is limited).
It’s key you are using salon quality shampoo or conditioner – whether you plan to leave your hair down or need to style it, above all else, salon quality Shampoo & Conditioner is most important, so I would say ensure you pack these.  Well, maybe just pop in one styling product containing UV protectant.

Now I know you have a manicurist on site – what’s her background?
We have the amazing and talented Debbie of Dolls House Nails. Debbie is fun, quirky and incredibly skilled in nail design. She has been in the industry for 27 years and has built up quite a following!

OK – so you’re called Mod’s hair PARIS – do any of your stylists actually get to go to Paris and train there?
YES! We get the opportunity to go the training school in Paris and it’s definitely on my to do list very soon!

To summarise – a perfect day on the job is…..
Blow waves, blow waves, blow waves!

Last time I was in the salon and we were talking about new features for my blog, you came up with a brilliant idea – a spin on the ever popular ‘what’s in my handbag’, you suggested featuring ‘what’s in my manbag’.  I love it, so, “Kurt – what’s in your manbag?”
Ok – well, I actually don’t carry around a lot at all!  But I do love my manbag.  I found this leather satchel bag in an opshop for $30. I’ve swapped out the strap on it (gotta add my own style) and it’s now perfect!  What’s in my manbag…

  • PLAY by Givenchy
  • L’Oreal Super Dust
  • Chapstick
  • PUMP mini
  • Phone (an obvious essential)

And just one other quick question – what are your 2 favourite apps on your phone?
Camera 360 and the Gameboy app (Pokémon is a rediscovered childhood addiction)

GORMAN Autumn/Winter 2013…

Unique New York Dress, style blog nz, fashion blog nz, nz blogger, Gorman

I’m currently coveting (in a big, big way) the new Gorman Autumn/Winter 2013 range. I absolutely love Gorman, but this AW13 Range is even more of a standout than usual! I’m a huge fan and admit to the occasional (truthfully – regular) splurge at Gorman when I’ve honestly intended to just ‘pop-in’ and browse; and now that I’ve seen the AW13 Range – well, let’s just say this collection has become my ‘shopping list’ as opposed to a range viewing.

Gorman’s Autumn/Winter 2013 collection is all about prints and colours with a strong homage to the triangle. It’s everywhere, starting with the Ship of Fools and Golden Gate prints which flash their points in bright blue and metallic gold foil, through to the Moon Rising velvet burnout dress in almost-neon citrus and a midnight navy. Spots, stripes, abstract animal prints also feature in a colour palette of pink, navy, mustard and gold. The AW13 colours refuse to recognize winter, remaining as crazy and as fresh as they were for summer.

So, here’s a sneak peek at some of the Autumn/Winter 2013 range, aka, my Gorman ‘must haves’ for winter…

INDUSTRY NZ – Where Hair & Fashion Collide

Industry Hair NZ

On Saturday night I had the pleasure of attending INDUSTRY NZ – where hair and fashion collide.

Star hairstylists, salons and brands joined forces to recreate the latest looks straight from New York Fashion Week, held at the Pullman, Auckland.

International Talent Rodney Cutler from Cutler Salon NYC – Sponsored by Redken 5th Avenue NYC, was INDUSTRY 2013’s international guest, following on the heels of the 2012 event’s VIP Snowden Hill. Rodney and his team worked on some 30 shows each at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week – New York, for the likes of Cynthia Rowley, Badgely Mishka and Tadashi. The latest looks from MBFW – New York (Feb 2013) were showcased by the Rodney Cutler team on the main stage at INDUSTRY.

Drinks & canapes, a live band, models rocking out with their own instruments on stage, fabulous fashion and on-screen cinematography that absolutely ‘made the show’.  Here are some of my highlights from the event…

DIY: The Commando-M/Blogger Collab – A Modern Twist On The Oxford.

Commando-M Blogger Collab Kathryn Wilson Shoe Design

Commando-M Blogger Collaboration Kathryn Wilson Shoe Design

As some of you may already know, Commando-M sneakers are about to re-launch! Commando-M were one of the leading New Zealand shoe companies in the 80’s (I’m pretty sure nearly every ‘child of the 80’s’ had a pair of these super cute sneakers) and I’m happy to report – they’re making a comeback!

Commando-M has already collaborated with leading shoe designer Kathryn Wilson and now Commando-M is collaborating with a selection of New Zealand Fashion Bloggers. Gurlinterrupted was lucky enough to be one of those bloggers invited to design a pair of Commando-M’s and you can now see my design and many others, on Commando-M’s Facebook page: COMMANDO-M’s FACEBOOK PAGE

Here’s a simple step by step guide to re-creating my sneaker design – A modern twist on the Oxford.

You will need:
A Pair of Sneakers
A Silver Metallic Pen
2 Paintbrushes – A fine and a medium tipped brush
Silver Acrylic Paint
Iridescent Mixing Medium (paint) this will create a true metallic silver paint
A small dish to mix your paints in
Masking Tape
Silver Ribbon
Super Glue

Guide:
Take a pair of white Commando-M’s (or whatever sneakers you are re-designing) and remove the laces.  Here’s a ‘before’ picture of my Commando M’s:
Commando-M Blogger Collab Kathryn Wilson Shoe Design

Draw on the design using the Silver Metallic Pen. This will enable you to map out your concept using the same hues as the paint you will be using.
Commando-M Blogger Collab Kathryn Wilson Shoe Design

Your design should now be drawn out evenly across both shoes – something like this:
Commando-M Blogger Collab Kathryn Wilson Shoe Design
It’s time to start with the Masking Tape.  Basically you want to tape around all the parts of the shoe you DON’T want to get paint on.  I taped up the eyelets, the edges of the sole and around the edging close to where I was painting.
Commando-M Blogger Collab Kathryn Wilson Shoe Design
Now mix together your silver acrylic paint and iridescent mixing medium and start painting very carefully around the dotted design using a fine paintbrush (when painting the areas further away from the dotted design you can move to a larger paintbrush).
Commando-M Blogger Collab Kathryn Wilson Shoe Design
Allow paint to fully dry before removing the masking tape.  Add your finishing touches…. Take your silver ribbon, measure out the ribbon to the same size as the shoelaces you removed earlier and cut to size (I also lightly burnt the edge of the ribbon with a lighter to prevent fraying) and insert in place of the original shoelaces.  Create a small bow using the same silver ribbon and attach a bow onto the back heel of each shoe using quick drying Super Glue.

VOILA!  Oxford style sneakers.

Stand Out In Glassons…

Stand Out Glassons

Models walked a petal-strewn runway at the Coatesville Rose Factory this week to showcase Glassons’ first ever runway preview show ‘Stand Out Glassons’.

Guests arrived by coach and were greeted by the delightful treats of caterers Little and Friday.  Soon after arriving, models rocked the runway to live music – an amalgamation of muso’s brought together by Zara Mirkin. Including members of The Rackets, The Checks and other musical geniuses.

Glassons new Creative Director Adam Bryce certainly made his mark with his forward thinking, aptly named new Glassons campaign – STAND OUT GLASSONS!!

The ‘stand out’ campaign stories presented were Sheer Romance, Off Duty, Rustic Wanderlust and Wild Flower.  Key themes that shone through for Autumn/Winter 2013 – varsity & faux leather jackets, ample denim, lace dresses, anoraks and flannelette check shirts.

Keep Your Eye On New Zealand Fashion Designer Liz Wilson…

Introducing LIZ WILSON’S new brand EUGÉNIE…

Former graphic designer (and Karen Walker design assistant) Liz Wilson has launched a capsule concept collection of her new brand, Eugenie.

The concept collection features refined cuts and sculptural silhouettes paired with a fresh approach to textile print.  Don’t be fooled by this ultra-feminine soft sorbet coloured palette, designer Liz Wilson isn’t interested in making women look demure or cute – her philosophy is to make unfussy, well crafted garments that create a feeling of ease, elegance and effortlessness for the wearer.

Liz Wilson with her brand Eugenie, proving New Zealand is still at the forefront of fashion design.

Check out a few of my favourite picks from the collection…

WIWT – Borrowing From My Guys Wardrobe….

When people say to me ‘describe your fashion style’, I can never narrow it down to one signature look.  I dress depending on my mood when I wake up in the morning and I like to mix up influences from street style, cinema and just whatever I conjure up in my head at the time.  I love boho chic, dressing girly, getting glammed up, and I would be lost without my super comfy boyfriend jeans. Another style I am quite partial to is an androgynous look, aka the ‘I raided my guys wardrobe’ look, is one of my favourites.

I’ve always lived by the mantra ‘money can’t buy style or class’ and with this in mind I love the challenge of hunting through a store I wouldn’t normally shop at, or a store that doesn’t stock designer/well-known brands (don’t get me wrong, I do love my designer brands too) with the aim of finding an item of clothing I can make work OR raiding my guys wardrobe to see what I can take from his wardrobe, to make work with mine – YEAH he’s finding out about this at the same time you are.  Thanks for letting me ‘borrow’ your shirt 🙂

What I Wore Today/OOTD……

  1. MECCANO:  Striped Mens Shirt with ‘sleeve braces’ aka my guy’s shirt, which I decided I really love and had to wear on this warm yet overcast/rainy day.  It’s an XL Mens Shirt, so it’s a great length for shorts! I just adore the little sleeve braces – very preppy!! He has another shirt I have my eye on that I’m going to wear as a shirt dress with a little tan belt and sandals.
  2. Max: black shorts
  3. Soda: Black and cork wedges
  4. Daniel Wellington: Watch (love love LOVE this watch!!)
  5. Karen Walker: Jewellery
  6. Boohoo.com: Tan studded bag
  7. Versace: Sunglasses

Nostalgems…

Quite some time ago I came across a gorgeous treasure trove of vintage jewellery, which selfishly I kept to myself.  But upon revisiting their online store I’ve decided it’s just too damned good not to share…. Nostalgems – charming yet affordable high-street jewellery created from vintage finds, objet trouvé and forgotten curiosities.

Think ordinary and discarded articles reborn as engaging wearable objet d’arts.  Old and new bits and bobs mingled together to make something that invites conversation!

I could literally get lost for hours trawling through the treasure trove that is Nostalgems.  From a tiny dandelion captured in a bottle, French love quotes on a chain & time-worn rosebuds delicately dangling from a charm bracelet, through to miniature vintage keys and an old floral sixpence – these pieces have already captured by heart!  The only downside to nostalgems is trying to decide what piece you love more – truly awe-inspiring, reminiscent of your grandmother’s family heirlooms!!

You can find Nostalgems on Facebook here or head straight to the Nostalgems website – but prepare to lose time in a jewellery wonderland.
