Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

When it comes to personal style, we rely on input from any number of sources: our favourite blogs, our chicest friends, street-style inspiration, Olivia Palermo (absolute fave). Our newest consultant? Google.

The search-engine-giant recently released its Spring 2015 Fashion Trends Report, and despite being a report, it’s actually really interesting. Basically, by taking the fashion terms that people are and aren’t searching for and comparing those numbers to years past, Google has determined, in a nutshell, what’s hot and what’s not (respectfully, most of these trends have already arrived in full force, or already left the scene, as the case may be).

Here’s what Google is predicting…

About To Take Off (fair to say this is already trending): The Midi Skirt
This super-flattering skirt has been steadily on the rise for a few years and is poised for a breakout this spring and summer. (Ahem, we heralded the style back in 2013.) Worn sleek and tight or high-waisted and floaty, the middle child is finally getting its due, and we recommend getting in on the action.

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

About To Take Off: The Tulle Skirt
Blame Carrie Bradshaw or ballerinas, but this ultra-feminine style has been creeping up the Google ranks in recent years. And we love it! A little tip: pair it with tougher pieces, like a biker jacket, to avoid comparisons to Clara from The Nutcracker.

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

About To Take Off: Palazzo Pants
These guys get a bad rap, but we’re all about rocking this easy, breezy trend. The key here is balancing proportions. Pair wide, billowy pants with a more fitted top, lest you get lost in the fabric.

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

In For Now: Shift Dresses
Shift dresses have been around forever; we’re not big fans, however, we can agree that they’re effortless and have a throw-on-and-go sensibility; and for pretending we’re Jackie O summering on Nantucket.

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

In For Now: High-Waisted Bikinis
We’ve long loved this cut for its leg-lengthening powers, but it seems to be especially on-trend this summer.

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

Fleeting Trend: Neoprene Swimsuits
Unlike their high-waisted counterparts, neoprene suits are a more time-sensitive fad. Sure, you’ll wear the hell out of it this summer, but come 2016…. who knows? Our advice: If you’re trend-crazy, go for it. Just don’t blow an entire month’s rent on one. Truth be known, if we never see another gaggle of girls wearing these, it’ll be too soon, #overtrend!

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

Fleeting Trend: Kale Sweatshirts
Another “here today, gone tomorrow” pick: quirky sweatshirts. If you’re into clothing emblazoned with your favourite green, go for it, but we’ll be skipping this one, thank you very much.

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

On The Way Out: Peplum Dresses
Peplums had a pretty long 15 minutes, but based on a few years of decreased searches, Google has proclaimed them officially dead. RIP, poufy middles. Feel free to never come back!

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

On The Way Out: String Bikinis
And with that, 99.9 percent of the world’s female population rejoices.

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

Cooling Off: Skinny Jeans
It seems our beloved skinnies are falling out of fashionable favour. We’ll still wear them, but we’ll also look to other styles like flares and boyfriend jeans. And don’t fret, we’ve got all your denim needs covered in our Denim Trend Report.

The Intriguing ‘Little Ghost’

little ghost new zealand leather goods

People often ask me, in the world of blogging, “what’s the best thing you’ve ever received? What’s the most fun thing you’ve received? What’s your favourite discovery via blogging to date? What’s the worst thing you’ve received that you really didn’t like?” To be honest, that’s not really what it’s all about for me, and in turn I find these questions very hard to answer. Yes, receiving things to preview before anyone else is of course great, and I’m still very excited to discover new fashion, beauty, lifestyle items every day, but that’s not why I’m in the blogging game. I genuinely love writing, I genuinely love discovering and sharing new finds; I receive a number of items every day, and yes, it’s true, I’m one of those bloggers that generally won’t write about things in a negative light, if I don’t like something, I simply don’t write about it (journalism 101, if it doesn’t interest you and you’re not passionate about it, it’s going to be a tenuous task to write about it).

Now, ask me, ‘what’s the most intriguing discovery you’ve made through blogging’ and it’s a whole new ball game! That to me is easier to answer… discovering items, stores, brands, etc, that, if I wasn’t in the blogging game, I might not have discovered so quickly. For example – Junk & Disorderly, Antique Ally, The Bread & Butter Letter, Lindi Kingi, Ribbon On A Bombshell, well, you get the picture; it’s these finds that I cherish the most, especially those that become a never-ending ‘treasure trove’ discovery; which segues nicely into ‘little ghost’…

Beautiful Editorials: Las Muertas

Beautiful Editorials: Las Muertas

Photographer Tim Tadder has created a haunting photo series called ‘Las Muertas.’ Inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead. The skull-painted women pays subtle homage to the festival’s Aztec roots where Mictecacihuatl (a girl who was sacrificed as an infant) the goddess of the underworld, was worshipped.

Tadder’s photos, created with the help of makeup artist Krisztianna and costume designer Julia Reeser, are indeed worthy of worship. The vibrant colors of these Persephones mark the subject as important, the symbolism suggesting something deadly and beautiful– but their faces are casual, indifferent, or curious. They walk the land of the dead as its mistresses, but their relationship with their surroundings is impersonal.

Granny Hair – Would You Rock The Silver Lock?

TREND ALERT: Granny Hair - Would You Rock The Silver Lock?

Style Icon Iris Apfel’s Film Debut. Watch The Trailer Here…

Style Icon Iris Apfel's Film Debut - Check Out The Trailer Here…

I’m obsessed with a woman I’ve never met! Its been this way for years. Is it possible to adore someone such as Iris Apfel, despite the fact I’ve never uttered a word to her? The answer is yes! Iris Apfel is one of the most incredible, inspiring, intelligent, simply incredible, women of all time…

MUST SEE: Style Icon Iris Apfel's Film Debut - Check Out The Trailer Here…

When Iris Apfel was a young woman from Queens, New York, starting out in the fashion industry, Frieda Loehmann, founder of the famed department store, took her aside: “She said, ‘You’re not pretty and you’ll never be pretty, but it doesn’t matter. You have something much better. You have style.’ ”

Apfel will be turning 94 this August, but she doesn’t seem to be stepping out of the fashion spotlight anytime soon. Her career took off when she worked as an interior designer for the White House, although she is not supposed to talk about it, according to the documentary trailer. She eventually became a style icon with her wide, thick-rimmed glasses and vast collection of costume jewellery. Despite her impeccable fashion sense, Apfel is not one to judge because “it’s better to be happy then well-dressed.” Don’t you just love her?

MUST SEE: Style Icon Iris Apfel's Film Debut - Check Out The Trailer Here…

Iris is the subject of a new documentary, out next month, by Albert Maysles—who, with his late brother David, directed such classics as Gimme Shelter and Grey Gardens (oh, Grey Gardens; this is one of my favourite doco’s! If you haven’t seen it, you must). Without Apfel, whose idiosyncratic style and Mr. Magoo-size eyewear inspired a 2005–6 exhibition at the Met, we would likely not be seeing the rise of the senior supermodel: Joan Didion for Céline, Charlotte Rampling for Nars, Jessica Lange for Marc Jacobs Beauty, Joni Mitchell for Yves Saint Laurent. Apfel herself is the new face of Kate Spade.

MUST SEE: Style Icon Iris Apfel's Film Debut - Check Out The Trailer Here…

This “rare bird of fashion,” as she is now known, first came to prominence in the 1950s, when she and her husband, Carl—who turned 100 during filming—founded Old World Weavers, a textile company hired by nine presidents for White House restorations. In Iris, we see Apfel mingle with Bruce Weber, Jenna Lyons, and Kanye West, while behind the closed doors of her Park Avenue apartment she quietly grapples with old age. Fashion, she says, never keeps her up at night. “Matters of health and things like that [do]. Things that are really important.”

Check out the trailer here:

I cannot wait to devour this fashion film. After watching the trailer, who’s with me?!
