Watch All The Highlights From “10 DAYS OF FASHION IN THE CITY” Right Here…

10 days of fashion in the city 2014

One of New Zealand’s hottest events – 10 Days of Fashion in the City, has officially wrapped up for 2014 (yes I hear makeup artists and stylists breathe a sigh of relief too!).  Events such as The Height of Fashion (a lunch and fashion show with New Zealand designers) and New Zealand’s Longest Catwalk (presented by Schwarzkopf) were just a couple of the attractions that showcased New Zealand’s finest, in Auckland’s Heart of the City.

One of the ’10 Days of Fashion in the City’ standouts has to be New Zealand’s Longest Catwalk (styled by none other than NZ’s hottest stylist – Kylie Cooke) where over 4,000 people watched as traffic came to a standstill and designer and streetwear dominated Auckland’s Queen St. The record-breaking golden mile was style central as the latest looks were brought to spectators on a 125 meter long stretch of runway.

If you missed all this fabulousness (yes, fabulousness is now a word!) you can check out all the highlights from ’10 Days of Fashion in the City’ right here…

The Experience Of A Lifetime With Brancott Estate….

Frank Yukich Brancott Estate

Last week I was flown to the stunning Brancott Estate Heritage Centre located in Marlborough (New Zealand’s wine region) and it’s there that I had the experience of a lifetime…

Brancott Vineyard in full flourishIf there is one location in New Zealand that I would say is an absolute MUST VISIT, it’s Brancott Estate vineyard in Marlborough.  Not only did I reach a whole new level of appreciation for New Zealand’s pioneers of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, I encountered things that I would never have experienced anywhere else in the world!  Today, Brancott Estate’s Heritage Centre has become a must on tourist itineraries (1.5 million visitors frequent the Marlborough region annually). It features a tasteful restaurant, retail store, tasting rooms, wine education facility and even a theatre. In fact, proving just how special this magical location is, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II made a visit to the vineyard in 1990, at which time she ceremonially planted a vine with a specially made spade and, following ancient tradition, poured sparkling wine over the new vine. I’m fairly certain there will be no other vineyard in New Zealand that has been graced with the Queen’s presence!

My day was spent touring the palatial Brancott Vineyard, wine tasting the new Fumé Blanc with Brancott Estate Chief Winemaker – Patrick Materman (which even included hand-picking some of the new vintage grapes – although admittedly their professionals in the vines made me look like a total rookie), lunch at the Brancott Estate Heritage Centre (you may have seen this fabulous venue when it was featured on The Great Food Race) and the day concluded with a visit to their Falcon aviary.

With a rich and deep history, the Brancott Estate Heritage Centre (located at Brancott Vineyard) offers a rare opportunity for wine lovers and novices to appreciate first-hand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc’s humble beginnings.  In particular the Brancott Estate Heritage Centre provides a platform to honour the location of the original Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc vines planted in 1975, and the success of the varietal that has gone on to become the world’s favourite New Zealand style wine.  Set in the breathtakingly beautiful home of the original Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, the Brancott Estate Heritage Centre opened in 2011 and boasts a cellar door, wine tasting facilities, retail displays, an audio-visual room, a private meeting or dining area featuring the latest technology (the facilities are state-of-the-art), an indoor restaurant as well as an external dining terrace (a little tip – book in advance for the restaurant because let me tell you from experience, when lunchtime hits, this place gets jam-packed!). The Brancott Estate Heritage Centre offers an unrivalled view of this world-famous wine region.

It was here at the Heritage Centre that I first discovered Brancott Estate’s new Special Reserve Marlborough Fumé Blanc – a new expression of the classic Sauvignon Blanc.  The subtle use of French oak during fermentation imparts a distinctive smoky flavour that gives Fumé Blanc its name (Fumé Blanc translates to ‘white smoke).  The result is a wine that shares many characteristics of a barrel-matured Chardonnay but still retains the fresh vibrancy of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Brancott Estate’s new Fumé Blanc is a stunning new varietal that will appeal to both Sauvignon and Chardonnay drinkers alike.

Just one of the many wonderful ways that Brancott Estate gives back is through the Marlborough Falcon Trust. This trust was established in 2009 and is supported by Wine Marlborough in regards to promotion of the trust, but it’s Brancott Estate that is the major sponsor of the Marlborough Falcon Trust.  $1 from every bottle sold in New Zealand from the Brancott Estate Living Land Series range is donated back to the Marlborough Falcon Trust, and it’s this money that has helped to build the breeding aviary located at Brancott Estate, as well as fund further educational programmes.  Through the support of Brancott Estate, educational programmes and promotional events, the Marlborough Falcon Trust hopes to raise the awareness of the plight of the Falcon.  It was onsite at Brancott Estate that I got to experience for the first time in my life, hand feeding one of the amazing Falcons named Fern.  A seriously surreal experience and I for one will be a huge supporter of the trust going forward (admittedly this will no doubt be via several purchases from the Brancott Estate Living Land Series). You can read more about the Falcon Trust here: www.brancottestate.com/living-land/new-zealand-falcon.

The location highlights the beauty of the iconic Marlborough landscape, and celebrates the home of the original Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc plantings. Their story began in Marlborough, New Zealand with a bold idea to plant the first Sauvignon Blanc vines where no one thought it possible, creating a
world-famous wine region, that has now become one of New Zealand’s biggest tourist attractions.  To find out more about all that Brancott Estate has to offer, head to www.brancottestate.com

Motorola Moto G smartphone giveaway nz

Introducing Moto G in New Zealand: An Exceptional Phone At An Exceptional Price!  Oh, and did I mention I’m giving one away?  Yup, that’s right, I have the hot new Moto G smartphone to give away to one of my lucky readers. Read on to find out how you can win – it’s super simple!

People all around the world want to be a part of the mobile Internet so they can access the world’s information, share, and connect with the things that matter to them. But the smartphone industry has relegated hundreds of millions of smartphone buyers to second-class status, preventing them from experiencing the mobile Internet at its best.

That’s because price-conscious consumers who don’t want to pay $750 or more for high-end smartphones have been left with two bad options. The first is to buy cheap, new smartphones made with second-rate technology that don’t do justice to modern apps and experiences like navigation, video chat and games. The second is to buy “low cost” versions of premium products that were released two or three years ago and are already obsolete.

Motorola think there should be a better option. Everybody deserves to be on the mobile Internet, and price shouldn’t stand in the way of anyone having a truly good smartphone to get him or her there.

Motorola and Brightstar, one of the world’s largest wireless distribution companies, introduces Moto G to New Zealand. Moto G is a smartphone that delivers a premium experience for a third of the price of current high-end phones.

Moto G includes:

  • A brilliant 4.5-inch HD display – the sharpest in its class – which goes edge-to-edge so you can enjoy movies, photos, video chats and more.
  • The newest Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 400 processor featuring a quad-core CPU for seamless multitasking and enjoying the web, videos and games, with all-day battery life.
  • Android 4.3 Jellybean, the most up to date Android of any phone in its class, with a guaranteed upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat at the beginning of 2014. No skins to clutter or slow the experience, and great performance with Google’s unbeatable mobile services such as Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps, Chrome and Hangouts.
  • Stylish design with a comfortable curved back.
  • Dual SIM support gives you the option to use the network that makes sense for who and where you’re calling and texting or combine your work and personal devices into one.
  • With its Quad-Band 3G support it will work seamlessly on any New Zealand network.

Moto G owners also get an extra 50GB of Google Drive storage free for two years to safely keep and share photos, documents and other files (that’s on top of the standard 15GB). That’s a total of 65GB! With that much space, you can securely store up to 7,000 music files, up to 14,000 pictures taken with your Moto G camera, or up to 500 HD video clips recorded on your phone. Offer must be redeemed within 30 days of activation.

Moto G is available at national retailers Harvey Norman, JB Hi-fi & 2degress for the exceptional price of $299RRP.

I’m a self-confessed shoe-a-holic (I guess owning 300+ pairs of shoes qualifies) so being invited to a media event that involves shoes is always going to grab my attention!  So with much excitement, last Friday I headed to Skechers HQ to celebrate the launch of their new “Skechers Memory Foam’ footwear collection, and to find out a little more about Skechers and the different footwear ranges they produce.  I’m a little embarrassed to say that before Friday, I really didn’t realise just how big Skechers are – I mean they’re actually one of THE biggest selling lifestyle & performance footwear brands (yes, I took notes when I was at HQ – nerd huh?!) in fact sales-wise, they’re pretty much on par with a brand that features a certain ‘tick’ symbol.

Now admittedly I’m normally a heels kinda girl [see: lives in heels and could run a marathon in them] however I am partial to the odd pair of swanky kicks, and with the new health & fitness regime that I’ve recently embarked on (Jillian Michaels you are killing me right now!) some really great sneakers comes in pretty darn handy these days, oh and sneakers featuring Memory Foam insoles that make you feel like you’re walking on little clouds of marshmallow – well that’s even better!

The Skechers Memory Foam insole liner

What an amazing morning at Skechers HQ!  Not only did we hear all about the latest and greatest in Skechers footwear, we were actually lucky enough to be fitted with our very own pair of Skechers Memory Foam sneakers so that we could experience first-hand Skechers new technology in lifestyle and performance footwear (I chose a pair of the “Flex Appeal” in black, as not only will they make for a great pair of workout shoes, they’re also going to be a killer addition to a sports-luxe outfit).  The best way I can describe these Skecher Memory Foam’s is “it’s like walking on clouds made of marshmallow”, alternatively, imagine walking around with pillows strapped to the soles of your feet.  They are super-duper soft and comfy, yet give you an amazing supportive bedding that molds to the shape of your foot when worn and bounces back immediately after removing your feet from the shoes. They’re going to be perfect when I’m doing cardio workouts as they are designed to alleviate pressure and reduce impact via the cushioning.  Now if I could just find a way to line all my high-heels with these Memory Foam insole liners…..hmmmm I wonder…… Sorry, I digress!!

If you want to know more about these new Skechers Memory Foam insoles, or perhaps you just want to see their entire footwear range (the mens range is really good by the way! I’m thinking my guy would love the “Wellington” in charcoal) then head to www.skechers.co.nz

To see more of what we got up to at Skechers HQ, and where we went for a little ‘foot pampering’, check out some of my snaps from the day…

DON’T vote for me…

This is officially the strangest post I’ve ever written, and I realise this is going to be a little controversial (some are not going to like the stance I’ve taken, some will hopefully respect it) however I do think that I need to explain why I DON’T want you to ‘vote for me’ and why I made the decision over the weekend to revoke my acceptance of a certain beauty blog award nomination.  I didn’t intend to actually write about why I took myself out of the running, however I have had an overwhelming amount of emails and messages asking why the website now states ‘gurlinterrupted was removed at the nominees request’. If you never knew anything about the award, then feel free to click out of this post now, as it will probably bore the heck outta you.   So, here goes…

Last week (Thursday or Friday I think it was), I was informed that I had received nominations for the “Beauty Review Best Beauty Blog Awards”, and was asked if I would accept the nominations and thus be a part of the competition to vie for the award.  Admittedly, I was at first flattered and quickly (clearly too quickly, without reading all the details) answered in the affirmative that I would indeed accept the nomination and was excited to be a part of it.  I then received an email saying that a voting system would be in put in place and a number of ’rounds’ would ensue to see who came out on top, and so, that’s what I did – I asked for your vote and that was that.

Cue forward a day and I was off to Blogcademy – an intense two-day course, run by three of the worlds biggest names in blogging (the course was amazing by the way!).  It was at Blogcademy that I was made to take a really good look at who I am as a “fashion, beauty, lifestyle blogger” – what my brand (gurlinterrupted) means to me, what my values are, what my point of difference is and what I need to do to accomplish everything I want to with my blog!  In short, I now know exactly where I want my brand to go, what my goals are and how to reach those goals, the new direction I will be taking, and most importantly, what I value and stand for, and of course, not compromising those values.  I spoke to the teachers at Blogcademy, and to several fellow bloggers about the beauty award I had just been nominated for.  I said I was excited, however felt weird about having to ask for votes for the first round, but it was all part of the process.  I was asked by the teachers “given that Gurlinterrupted isn’t solely a beauty blog, you cover fashion and lifestyle as well – are you worried you’ll potentially being pigeonholed?” Admittedly, that hadn’t crossed my mind. The real doubt around the award came when they asked “who’s on the judging panel, when does the judging take place, and what criteria did you have to meet?”.  I realised I had no idea at what stage any of this would take place.  When I returned home from Blogcademy on Saturday night I re-read the email only to find that in actual fact, the entire process was based on ‘voting and voting alone’. This meant that in essence there was actually no kudos (in my personal opinion) behind this award, and that it didn’t actually recognise what I felt the award was stating e.g. ‘Best Beauty Blogger’.  It was solely going to be based on how many votes I could wrangle up and in turn this would mean constantly asking friends, acquaintances, colleagues e.g. you guys reading this right now, to go and vote for me to win an award that actually doesn’t recognise what I want to be recognised for – my blog, my writing skills, my content, my qualification in makeup artistry, my background in beauty writing, actually it had nothing to do with my content at all.

Throughout day two of Blogcademy, the more I thought about it, the more I felt uncomfortable about having my name/my brand attached to an award process, that for me personally, wasn’t what I wanted to be recognised for e.g. ‘being capable of getting the most votes’.  The fact I kept hearing things like ‘only do and write about what you’re passionate about’, and ‘if your gut-feeling is that somethings not quite right, it probably ISN’T right’ (for a moment there I thought, sh*t these girls aren’t teachers, they’re blo*dy mind-readers and they’re directing all these messages at me ha ha ha). Well that was it for me, I got home Sunday night and sent an email stating that I would like to revoke my acceptance of the nomination and asked that they remove Gurlinterrupted from the competition.

I do feel like I need to state that no fault lies with the beautyreview website – I still think it’s a great website, as well as a great source of information!  And had I of read the entire email that informed me of the nomination, I would have known from the get-go how the whole process was going to play out, and in turn I wouldn’t have accepted the nomination.  I also don’t want to offend anyone still involved in the competition – in fact I wish everyone still in the running all the best – the fact of the matter is, it just wasn’t right for me!

Aaaaaanyway – Sorry for the ramble – this turned out to be a novel rather than a simple explanation – it’s just that I couldn’t reply to all the messages individually that asked why I had taken myself out of the running, yet I felt I did owe everyone an explanation given you all took the time out of your day to vote for me (which I truly appreciate), you shared my ‘vote for me’ post, and wrote gorgeous, positive messages urging your friends to vote too, and I want to thank everyone that got behind me, especially those that nominated me in the first place. You’re all amazing!!

“IT” by Alexa Chung…

Alexa Chung, It, Alexa Chung Book It, Book review, best reads, alexa Chungs new book it, beauty blog nz, fashion blog nz, style blog nz, beauty media nz, fashion media nz, angie fredatovich, gurlinterrupted, fashion, beauty

I finally got around to reading my copy of “IT” by Alexa Chung.  Ok, the word “reading” is probably a stretch as it’s hardly an in-depth novel, however I thought it was worth reviewing for those of you that may not have yet perused Miss Chung’s recent release…

I know they say ‘never judge a book by its cover’ (I do by the way) I have to say I absolutely loved the cover and the title. Not unlike the simplicity of the title, the faded pink cover and minimalistic look was actually quite alluring and would make for a beautiful coffee table book.

Alexa Chung, It, Alexa Chung Book It, Book review, best reads, alexa Chungs new book it, beauty blog nz, fashion blog nz, style blog nz, beauty media nz, fashion media nz, angie fredatovich, gurlinterrupted, fashion, beauty

It oozes that “Alexa Chung effortlessly cool” vibe, and is clearly imagery focused with all the “I’m so hipster with my unedited, poorly lit, gritty, raw snaps”, however at the same time it wreaks of the publishing house and a marketing team having pulled the whole thing together with Alexa signing her name to the completed tale.

Alexa states that her book is a stream of consciousness and it takes us from her childhood to the present, giving us some insight into her style, friends, music and beauty, however I think a more accurate descriptor would be a coffee-table book jam-packed with random doodles and photos of god-only-knows-who (there are no photo descriptors or names attached to the images), nor is there flow or continuity. However I shouldn’t of expected much more than doodles and photos as I’ve since read that she told Vogue “I wrote it because I was bored and wanted to create something alongside hosting television shows”.

I know it’s sounding more and more like I didn’t like the book and that I’m solely criticising it, but in actual fact, it just left me a little unsure as to what the hell I’d just read, yet at the same time, I did find it somewhat charming and funny. I would have liked to see more glimpses of the real Alexa. For example she talks about heartbreak and admits that she once googled ‘how long does heartbreak last’, and for just a split second you start to see her as a real girl, a girl like any other – but then you turn the page and there’s a photo of “F___ you’ written in the sand, followed by an obnoxious selfie.  Again – actually kind of funny.

Upon reaching the last page of the book I found myself in the same predicament I’m in now – I didn’t love it, but I definitely didn’t hate it either, and I’m not sure what I expected, but my brain is still trying to make sense of it all.  What is your purpose “IT”?

In summary – don’t expect ‘groundbreaking’ and you wont be disappointed.  I will probably peruse it again, and will definitely leave it out as a coffee-table book and interesting conversation starter!

I’ll leave you with a few insightful things I’ve learnt from Alexa…

–  Nudity is necessity at a festival

–  Karl Lagerfeld is very, very funny!

–  How to ‘look like a groupie’ (yay, everything I’ve never wanted)

–  A guide to getting dressed – “you have to look in the mirror” (thank goodness for Alexa [see: sarcasm] all these years I’ve been getting dressed and looking in the mirror, oh wait..)
