NZFW: STOLEN GIRLFRIENDS CLUB ‘THE GUILTY ONES’ FALL/WINTER 2015

NZFW: STOLEN GIRLFRIENDS CLUB 'THE GUILTY ONES' FALL/WINTER 2015

Held at the Western Springs Speedway, Stolen Girlfriends Club (SGC) presented a sinister whodunit with their Fall/Winter 2015 collection, aptly named The Guilty Ones – where utilitarian glamour meets camping grunge.

SGC showcased their signature grunge edge, with the added twist of utilitarianism and ‘50’s styling in a nod to David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. The result – a collection shrouded in mystery, suspicion and intrigue.

NZFW: STOLEN GIRLFRIENDS CLUB 'THE GUILTY ONES' FALL/WINTER 2015

Heroing ‘The Guilty Ones’ collection – leather; and leather aplenty! Leather jackets of varying lengths accompany full-quilted skirts, shorts and sweaters. Glitter-coated cotton canvas is dressed down with shearling collars and ‘mom jeans’ and glammed up in stiff ‘50s skirting and glitter ankle boots. Backpacks, totes, chunky shoes and boots complete the look.

NZFW: STOLEN GIRLFRIENDS CLUB 'THE GUILTY ONES' FALL/WINTER 2015

Next up in the SGC whodunit – Stolen takes to the forest… hiding in a hunter camo print that on closer inspection reveals micro multi-coloured hand drawn figures, scattered to form a camouflage. Plaid coats, kilts, dresses and shirting has a Swanndri edge and shell jackets in shower proof memory yard nylons are adorned with misplaced embroidered badges for a DIY feel. The Dark Tropic motif reinvents a Hawaiian print in blues and berries with Laura Palmer’s hand ominously emerging from the water amongst a backdrop of menacing rock clusters and dark pine trees.

NZFW: STOLEN GIRLFRIENDS CLUB 'THE GUILTY ONES' FALL/WINTER 2015

Tough buckles and strappings adorn Stolen’s heavy shearling and chunky melton knitwear. Luxe knits in both form-fitting and boxy shapes stands out in bold yellow 100% merino and a grunge-luxe charcoal melange. Printed jacquard knits and placement print sweaters echo the collection’s guilty verdict.

NZFW: STOLEN GIRLFRIENDS CLUB 'THE GUILTY ONES' FALL/WINTER 2015

SGC’s hardwear and embellishments feature a dark edge with hand sewn black jewels forming guns, daggers, axes and broken hearts clustered over a denim boiler suit and black floor length evening gown fit for homecoming queen Laura Palmer.

Fashion Week Essentials: A Blogger’s Guide to Fashion Week….

Fashion Week Essentials: A Blogger's Guide to Fashion Week….

New Zealand Fashion Week (NZFW) 2014 is finally upon us, and as designers are gearing up to show their collections, we’re preparing for a week of short deadlines, multiple shows per day, and lots of mingling. We’ve compiled a list of essentials necessary for staying organised and surviving fashion week intact. Here, we list our tips (a few of our fellow fashion-week-bloggers have contributed to this ‘fashion week essentials’ write-up) on pre-show prep, on-site must-haves and after-show care. From setting your out-of-office notification, to the perfect bold lippy, our fave footwear, through to fashion week etiquette.

Fashion Week Essentials: A Blogger's Guide to Fashion Week….
First things first – you are no doubt going to miss a tonne of emails while you’re immersed in Fashion Week, so turn your out-of-office notification on and let PR’s and anyone else trying to contact you during this time, know when you’ll next be coming up for air!

Pack your camera, a fully charged battery and a spare memory card the night before. Newbies to fashion week, take note… an iPad is NOT an acceptable form of capturing images. Using an iPad during any runway show is not fashion week etiquette! You’re simply blocking photographer’s shots and annoying everyone around you.

Phone/Charger – charge your phone overnight and pack a charger. There will be access to power in the venue and a bloggers gotta ‘gram & tweet right?!

Laptop and charger – hopefully you’re lucky enough to have access to the media room, where in between shows you can get a few of your write-ups completed; and without a laptop (and charger) you will be losing valuable writing time.

Bring a notebook – as old-school as it may sound in this digital age (and yes, I know there are apps for keeping notes) trying to type on a phone while models are drifting down the runway is near impossible and you don’t want to forget the important details now do you? A notebook is a neccessity for writing about all the detailing on the garments, remembering the hero prints and all other newsworthy information. Plus, just as I prefer a book to reading a novel on a Kindle, I can’t go past a fabulous notebook, like this ‘fucking brilliant journal’ from macyhome.co.nz Fashion Week Essentials: A Blogger's Guide to Fashion Week…. While still on ‘media room’ access – I highly recommend headphones if you are hoping to pump out those editorials (admittedly I’m far too swept up in catching up with out-of-town friends that I don’t get to see all that often as we all come together for NZFW, to put on headphones) but be warned, the media room can be a hustle and bustle of noise, especially if you’re in there at the same time as me, Anya (from Beautiful Bedlam) and Sopheak (from SopheakSeng.com) – our laughter is loud and aplenty!

Label your gear! I cannot stress this enough! In the media room, chargers are flying back and forth, coats and jackets are swept up in a flurry as editors scramble to make the next show. Phones, notebooks, water bottles, laptops and cameras through to cardigans – most of our gear all looks the same. Cue shameless plug… I was lucky enough to receive a Brother P-Touch Label Maker earlier this month (my partner in organisational crime) and being the OCD freak that I am, I WILL be utilising this to stamp my mark on all my gear (yip – it even prints labels for clothing/fabric). If you don’t happen to have media room access, you should still label your gear, as NZFW does have a ‘lost and found’ box and yes, there are still some honest people out there that hand in items they’ve happened upon (I even had someone chase me out of the main runway room as they saw from a few rows back that I’d dropped my phone as I stood up and they followed me until they could return it. Bless you phone-returning stranger!) Fashion Week Essentials: A Blogger's Guide to Fashion Week…. Business cards – bring them, a lot of them. Fashion week equals making new friends and networking, networking, networking!

Bottled water and  Nurofen – Champagne at 3pm can cause headaches by 9pm.

Keep your nails in check – bring your nail polish with you to touch up any unsightly chips. If you’re OCD like me, or just want to ensure you’re nail-faux-par-free, having the same colour in your bag as you’re sporting on your nails will make touch-ups easy! We’ll be donning ARTDECO’s new spring range – Art Couture Nail Lacquer… Fashion Week Essentials: A Blogger's Guide to Fashion Week….Footwear – wedges, sneakers and flats are your friends! If you’re a heels wearer – I suggest you keep a pair of ballet flats in your bag – preferably a pair that are compact, such as Fairy Feet. They’re so incredibly handy to pop on between shows and they come in a range of colours – you can check them out here: www.fairyfeet.co.nz

Sneakers are totally acceptable form of footwear at New Zealand Fashion Week and I for one will be sporting sneakers to a few shows. My sneaker of choice will be either my trusty converse, or a pair of the never-fail, New Balance kicks… Fashion Week Essentials: A Blogger's Guide to Fashion Week…. A snack bar or fruit –  just in case there’s no time to go out for food… sure, there are generally some snacks in your goodie bags, but you can only live on Jaffas and Liquorice Allsorts for so long (and trust me, I survived on these items alone for an entire day last year, the sugar come-down wasn’t pretty!).

Downtime and afterhours – I recently received these new eyeSlices (reuseable eye treatment pads) and my first thought upon receiving them – they are going to be a lifesaver during NZFW.  I’ve already been trialling them in the run up to fashion week and I’m in love! They deliver five key active ingredients to address five common eye concerns.  It’s a good excuse to put your feet up and take five minutes to relax – while combating premature ageing, puffiness, redness, dark circles and tiredness around the eye area. RRP $37 (which includes a pair of eyeSlices® pads and a clam or storage container to store them in between uses). For more info head to www.eyeslices.co.nz Fashion Week Essentials: A Blogger's Guide to Fashion Week…. Beauty essentials – these are our beauty must-haves during NZFW… Lucas paw paw (for dehydrated lips, to apply to blisters caused by heels, to combat unwanted blemishes, yeah it’s an all-in-one balm). There was no way we would create a ‘beauty essentials’ piece and not include MAC Cosmetics… MAC strobe cream (we all own this right?) the perfect hydrator/illuminator/foundation base – ahhh the list goes on, it does A LOT! MAC Face & Body foundation for touch-ups throughout the day; and since we’re still infatuated with MAC’s ‘The Simpsons’ collection (available in-store 4th September), we’ll be donning one or two key pieces from the range. And our number one ‘go to’ bold lip colours for NZFW are: MACs Ruby Woo, Lady Danger & Pure Heroine.

Fashion Week Essentials: A Blogger's Guide to Fashion Week….

If we’ve left any ‘fashion week essentials’ off the list that you think should be included, we’d love you to share yours with us, so leave us a comment and let us know.

M.A.C Technique Seminar + WIN One Of Two MAC Makeup Lessons Valued At $150 Each…

To wrap up New Zealand Fashion Week we headed along to the MAC Technique Seminar on the weekend.  A fabulous event where we were shown how to create two different looks by M.A.C Makeup Artists – Olivia and Kiki.

Olivia created a beautiful dramatic eye and nude lip on Ella Corbin, whilst Kiki focussed on a dark lip and flawless fresh face on model Aislinn Faulkner. As Olivia and Kiki showed us how to create these two very different looks, they also shared with us their favourite MAC Cosmetics items that they wouldn’t be without, as well as sharing a couple of insider tips.

In making over N Model Management’s Ella and Aislinn, both makeup artists used their ultimate MAC beauty items – Prep + Prime, Fast Response Eye Creme, Lip Conditioner, MAC Concealer Palette; and of course the infamous MAC 239 & 217 Makeup Brushes.

A great tip that the girls shared with us was how to create a flawless liner along your lash-line/eyelid.  Many of us are guilty of, when trying to create a beautiful cat-eye-line, looking straight at the mirror or tilting the head down slightly and applying the liner. Or worse still. pulling the eyelid taut to try to achieve a smooth application.  What Olivia and Kiki told us was that if you do either of these things the lashes actually contract, which in turn creates an imperfect and wavy line.  To avoid this, and instead create the perfect lashliner look, tilt your chin up and then apply the fluid liner – viola! A totally different perspective, of which creates the perfect line.

But hey, why talk you through all the fabulous MAC products and further tips & tricks when you could find out first hand for yourself…

New Zealand Fashion Week 2013: DAY THREE – Runway Show Reviews, Beauty & Opinions…

And so with ‘day three’ comes the end of New Zealand Fashion Week.  The day started with the NZFD Designer Showcase and ended on a high with Salasai.

An incredibly long and tiring week, but a week crammed with fashion and beauty means I wouldn’t miss it for the world.  The sleep deprivation, the editorial deadlines, the hours on end without so much as a moment of downtime to eat, doesn’t take away from the glorious week that is New Zealand Fashion Week.  I met so many new people – designers, media, bloggers and the like. I’ve made a tonne of new friends; and that’s what makes all the gruelling hours SO worth it! I actually sat back on day three and thought “wow, I cant believe this is my world! Sitting front row at fashion week, watching models drift down the runway donning fabulous outfits, reporting for some of my favourite ezines, and going backstage to hang out with the uber-talented MAC Cosmetics creative team, watching the likes of Amber D and James Molloy create beauty looks that most makeup artists can only dream of”.  What a life – I wouldn’t change a thing and I’m so incredibly grateful that I get to wake up every day LOVING what I do!!

Aaaaanyway, I digress…  NZ Fashion Weekend kicks off tonight with the Red Bull Opening Party, and so begins a weekend of fashion and designer garage sales, makeup seminars and designer collection shows open to the public.

DAY THREE…

NZFD Designer Showcase
This group show debuted Autumn/Winter 2014 collections from My Boyfriends Back, Millicent, Sheryl May, Mardle and Love Hotel.

My Boyfriends Back
My Boyfriends Back showcased her ‘She’s In Bloom’ collection of dark romance and femininity mixed with an endearing awkward edge.  Featuring beautiful floaty dresses in rose print fabrics & devore velvet. Perfectly crafted woollen jackets and capes, alongside romantic silk maxi dresses. Millicent
Millicent’s A/W14 collection, aptly named ‘Blur and Focus’ showcases contrasts in form and fabric.  The combination of texture with smooth & silky, fluid for firm and shine with matte tells the story of blurring the lines with fashion.

Deep jewel coloured hues of moss, purple and teal tell the story of modern femininity and sophistication.  Millicent has created beautiful, effortless & completely wearable designs and the designers’ love of textiles, colour and print shines through in the detailed work of each garment, such as her leather cigarette-pants, and knit jersey rose print dress featuring a thigh high split.

Sheryl May
Sheryl May’s ‘Reign Fall’ collection reflects the spirited bond which Sheryl has with London – her second home – a place of original fashion trends, where people of all walk of life express their style.  This is the story behind May’s Reign Fall Collection.

May combines print and texture, old and new, vintage with contemporary.  An owl print mixed with a floral design was the key theme throughout her collection, from full-front prints to an owl backpack.  A feminine approach throughout the collection via beautiful drapey silk fabric and form-fitting tartan pieces (her well structured tartan pants were absolutely divine), mixed with the unexpected such as the floral rock star biker jacket.  A beautiful collection encompassing drama and originality.

Mardle
Mardle showcased her collection of ‘Way of the Saint’.  A juxtapositioning of the fantastical styling of Japanese Onna-bugeisha – female warriors of the upper social classes in feudal Japan, French saint & warrior of her own time, Joan of Arc.

Mardle’s collection features graphic brocades, heavy wools and boucles, amongst printed chiffon and more traditional Japanese fabrications.  Lace, merino and velveteen added a dramatic twist to the collection and the fabulous copper statement jewellery topped the collection off perfectly.

Oversized coats, wraps and tailored pieces made for a beautiful, feminine collection with an eclectic mix of eye-catching fabric.  A standout range proving Mardle is here to stay!

Love Hotel
Love On Line tells the story of Love Hotel’s collection.  Inspired by today’s new ideas of femininity and dating practices, whilst referencing a time of romance through the use of layering, lingerie and lots of spots.

Love Hotel featured many floating chiffon pieces and printed kimono’s.  Oversized beret’s were donned by all the models, which I quite liked, however what I didn’t overly love was the blush pink negligee affair, which tragically didn’t quite wear so well on the model and left very little to the imagination (I probably wouldn’t have sent that particular piece down the runway!) Negligee-gate aside,  the collection is quite beautiful and managed to tie feminine and masculine together very well. Totally versatile and wearable pieces – pieces that I would love to don myself!

Daniel K
Exquisitely styled by the uber-talented Mino of FOUREYES, Daniel K hit the runway with beautifully elegant garments in a series of liquid inspired designs, wave prints and polka dots.  Silk dresses and harem pants were cut to perfection, showcasing their fluidity and wearability.  The knitwear was an absolute standout with the ‘blue knot knit’ and red ‘wave knit top’, I wanted to jump on to the runway and grab the garments right off the models back, I loved this knitwear so much!  Completely wearable and timeless winter-wear, that had the audience looking on in absolute awe.  Kimonos and double-layered silk pants graced the models in a manipulation of fabric creating texture and drama that made Daniel K stand out from the rest.

This up and coming designer is sure to take the fashion world by storm.

BMW New Generation
The BMW New Generation showcased three designers that are totally new to the fashion scene.  This year we saw Beverly Riverina, Nara Paz and Crooked Seven…

Beverley Riverina
Riverina’s collection ‘from fleece to fashion’ showcases, as you would expect from the name, a range of garments that have been handcrafted using various methods of manipulating wool.

Nara Paz
An unexpected delight!  Nara Paz showcased her collection ‘Impressions’.  She might be new to the scene, but expect to see a whole lot more of her in the coming months.  Paz’s designs were beautifully tailored, nicely stylised and quite simply – stunning!  When her models sashayed down the runway, there was almost a stunned silence from the media, as we turned and looked at each other in a knowing ‘wow, these garments are amazing! This girl is new to the scene? Really? These garments are fabulous!’

Standouts for me – a tailored satin jacket paired with an exquisite high-glamour tulle layered skirt in a grey-toned hue and full-sleeved black knit dress with leather detailing and a low ‘cut-out’ back. I need these garments in my life! Now!  Breathtaking!!

Crooked Seven
Another really good collection from the New Generation Show.  Crooked Seven featured their collection ‘Only By The Night’.  A fabulous ‘ready to wear’ range showcasing versatility, great tailoring and a really good use of colour.  Slightly edgy ‘sports-luxe’ range worth seeking out!  The standout for me – a black sheer shirt dress with block panelling!

The public vote for the $5000 BMW New Generation Winner was Crooked Seven.  No doubt this will do wonders for thrusting this new brand straight into the limelight!

Swimwear
This year NZFW added a new section to the fashion schedule – Swimwear!  A welcome relief from all the warm weather wear as we head in to summer here in NZ.  Up until this point I had seen so many beautiful winter garments I was actually sad that winter is coming to an end.  Cue Tigerlily and Surface Too Deep bringing their talent to the catwalk in the form of stylish wearable beachwear.

Surface Too Deep
Showcasing ‘The Amazing Adventures of Bonnie and Belle’ collection, the talented twosome – Wellington designers Sarah-Jane Abrams & Ester Miro put a fabulous vintage spin on swimwear in the form of yesteryear silhouettes with a modern twist.  Onesies had cut-out features in all the right places and bikinis with Hollywood starlet style high-waist briefs & gold hardware had me yearning to own one of these fabulous bikinis.  A sophisticated collection of swimwear, and in my personal opinion, Surface Too Deep offers a style of beachwear that woman actually WANT to wear as opposed to needing to wear when hitting the poolside or beach.

Tigerlily
Bringing tribal prints to the fore, alongside fabulous cover-wear in the form of kimonos, dresses, jumpsuits, shorts and shirts. Hats, and bags had a boho feel with tassel, crystal and fringe detailing, and models donned sparkling bindi’s, further emphasising the boho vibe has arrived. A summer coloured palette of clever swimwear and fabulous accessories.

Salasai
Kirsha Whitcher’s label Salasai bought NZFW to an end on a high note.  Salasai’s ‘Liberté et Damour’ collection showcased 12 looks of which were stylised to perfection.  The accessories perfectly complimented each look with the introduction of ostrich feathers, crystals and wool.

Fabulously manipulated silk and knitwear featured regularly with exquisite detailing.  Beautifully crafted outerwear, harem pants, trousers and capes, bought the entire collection together seamlessly, with the standout garment of the evening being the silk bomber featuring a bird motif.

Don’t be surprised when you see Salasai on international runways within the next year or two.  Salasai certainly belongs on an international platform.

New Zealand Fashion Week 2013: DAY TWO – The Runway Shows & Backstage With MAC Cosmetics

New Zealand Fashion Week 2013: DAY TWO - The Runway Shows & Backstage With MAC Cosmetics

Day two of New Zealand Fashion Week brings a new round of runway shows and designers to the fore, and in turn, new beauty looks created by the talented team of M.A.C  Cosmetics.  I’ve outlined a synopsis of my key outtakes from each show and where I was able to go backstage (time dependent) – the beauty angle that accompanied the fashion collection…

Deryn Schmidt – Runway
The Autumn-Winter 2014 collection, titled ‘Capture This’, featured Schmidt’s signature style of exquisite tailoring and creating timeless classic pieces.

Many of the garments in Deryn Schmidt’s winter collection feature a print reminiscent of a camera flash, as though each garment is being captured on film from various angles, offering different viewpoints. The entire collection is effortlessly chic, extremely versatile with meticulous detailing.

Knitwear adds a new dimension to Schmidt’s range and models donned these styles in varying degrees. From luxurious knitwear tops, through to subtle components such as collar and sleeve detailing. Faux fur capes and structured jackets in muted tones completed Schmidt’s winter range.

Through her winter 14’ collection, Schmidt has shown that by applying a modern interpretation to classic shapes, her garments are timeless, versatile and can be worn by woman of all ages.

UNDERGROUND – Fashion Installation
UNDERGROUND is a survey show – part exhibition, part live fashion installation. The show exhibits, new collaborative work from New Zealand’s emerging and most experimental, boundary pushing fashion designers.

Installed in an underground carpark, the venue creates an atmosphere that speaks to each of the designers – left of centre, no rules and doing things their own way, at their own venue of choice. From underneath – the new force comes!

UNDERGROUND features 10 New Zealand designers: Blue Blank, Eugenie, Jimmy D, Kowtow, Thistle Brown, Jessica Grubisa, Maaike, Miss Crabb, Otsu, Underground Sundae.

This was such a spectacular and unique showcase, and a case where the photographs really do tell the story, and the interpretation is left up to you. Truly the standout event of the day.

NYNE – Beauty
The underlying theme, as created by M.A.C’s director of Makeup Artistry, Asia-Pacific – James Molloy, is a tonal, nomadic & ghostly makeup look, with the emphasis on ghostly.  To create this look for NYNE’s runway show James used a colour palette consisting of mauve, taupe and beige.  The products Molloy used – The concealer palette used for a full-face cover. On the eyes, Paintpot in the colour ‘Taylor Grey’.  This is one of MAC’s new releases, due to hit counters very soon, and when it is released, it’s well worth checking out as it makes for the perfect matte base for a smouldering smokey eye! The lips were kept fairly nude using flesh colour lipsticks adapted to suit each model and a taupe shade liner.

Trelise Cooper – Runway
TC showcased a number of new collections of which encompassed a ‘country rose’ inspired range, featuring bold brights and floral. Punk rock plaid with metallic thread detailing and models donning fake piercings and dark moody lips showcasing Cooper’s own journey of going from strength to strength and finding your ‘inner-fierce’.  Trelise’s mainline collection featured tailored and structured garments alongside high-glamour silk gowns and feminine party dresses, with a healthy dose of sequins.

Trelise Cooper – Beauty
The look for Trelise Cooper’s Runway show – created by MAC’s infamous Amber D, is all about strength, in particular going from strength to strength.  The crux of this story is ‘beauty meets hard’.  This is told through a 90’s piercings.  Each of the beautiful models walking the runway for Cooper, is given a contrasting look to their otherwise flawless beauty.  The fierce makeover consists of several face piercings – from lip rings to nose studs and more (these are obviously removable and are only attached with cosmetic adhesive by the skilful Amber D and her talented team).  The rest of the look was achieved by creating a ‘suede skin’ foundation look – a diffused/glowing coverage that is neither shiny nor matte.  Combining two lipstick hues – fuchsia and burgundy, with ‘fig’ over the top, created the lip colour.  The lip look was finished with apple red blush applied over the lipstick.

Stolen Girlfriends Club – Runway
Last night Stolen Girlfriends Club showcased their Winter ’14 collection ‘Dirty Magic’ in a dark underground carpark reminiscent of a New Orleans occult district.

Dirty Magic draws inspiration from hand painted tarot cards and late gothic art for their new dark collection.

For the girls it’s all about rich velvet paisley motifs, plaid and chiffon, along with knits and faux leather.  For the boys – plaid, striped knits and plenty of Vintage-esque shirts and tees.  Paisley is a key theme throughout the entire collection and this intricate print has been developed with NZ artist Eli Lamont.

SGC work some magic of their own with their new accessories, featuring a women’s ankle boot with removable thigh-high chaps and a hat offering that would make Sid or Stevie proud.

Misery loves company and in Dirty Magic, it’s found a whole new twisted family.

Stolen Girlfriends Club – Beauty
‘Pagan Punk’ in inky tones was the inspiration for the Stolen Girlfriends Club Runway Show makeup look. The story, created by MAC’s Director of Makeup Artistry – James Molloy, is told by creating a dramatic eye with a dark voodoo vibe.  The models look absolutely incredible!! Models appeared to have vampire-like, glowing blood-red eyes. Molloy created the illusion using: M.A.C Marine Ultra Paint Stick buffed onto the eyelid with Basic Red Chromagraphic Pencil applied to the lower lash line.  M.A.C Gloss Crème Brilliance applied to the cheekbones and eyelid for shine.

Nails: Leah Light custom blending M.A.C Vestral White, Delicate, Quiet Time and Skin Nail Lacquers.  M.A.C Nocturnelle Nail Lacquer used for painting on symbols.  Nails customized to create a grunge, goth, deconstructed look.

New Zealand Fashion Week 2013: The Runway Shows & Backstage With MAC Cosmetics

If you follow me on FB, Twitter and Instagram you will have already seen a few sneak peeks from behind the scenes of Day 1 at NZFW 2013.

As I am covering NZFW for both runway and beauty, and reporting for ezines -Fashionz.co.nz & BeautyBible.co.nz, this has meant that time is limited. From 9am to 9pm, I am based onsite at the Viaduct Event Centre – the home of NZFW, or dashing off to one of the offsite runway shows, and have around 10 minutes between runway, backstage, interviews and more).  With this in mind, and rather than inundating you multiple blog posts for each show, I thought it would be best to capture the key outtakes from the runway shows, up close and personal beauty features from the fabulous MAC team backstage (where they create ALL the magic), along with all my favourite shots captured throughout the day.  So, without further ado – let’s get on to the magic of Day One at New Zealand Fashion Week 2013…

Twenty-seven names – Runway
Rene Magritte – infamous Belgian surrealist artist was the inspiration for twenty-seven names’ winter collection entitled ‘I’m Lost’, which refers to the artists first painting ‘the lost jockey’ showcasing Magritte’s love of classic preppy pieces and light-hearted graphic prints.  Ankle socks paired with high-shine loafers, oxford cable knit sweaters teamed with floaty fabrics, and hearts, polka dots and pleats featured throughout runway show.

The designers looked to Magritte’s signature style, featuring her famed symbols – the bowler hat, green apple and beating heart.  Using a vividly tonal colour palette, twenty-seven-names Winter 2014 collection echoes the artist’s use of darkness and daylight through nudes, creams, navy and red

Standout pieces from the collection – the ‘I’m lost’ applique sweater, marais pleated culottes, for caroline dress, fireside jacket and cherry bomb pleat dress.  Each piece speaks to an overly sentimental and hopelessly romantic sensibility, whilst at the same time, completely wearable.

Looking like they’ve just stepped off the set of 90210, girls are looking fresh-faced and beautiful.  Playing to their naturally beautiful features, their look is enhanced using MAC Strobe liquid, Prep & Prime Moisture Infusion, Clear Brow Set, Mineralize Rich Lipstick in Luxe Naturale.  The look is inspired by twenty-seven names’ winter collection entitled ‘I’m Lost’, which refers to classic preppy pieces. Key Makeup Artist – Amber D

There was a celebration on the runway at Trelise Cooper’s COOP show – a collection of fun, colour and individualism through faux fur, holographic sheen, fabulous prints and shimmery metallics. Butterfly motif teamed with alphabet print & stripes, twinkling sequin shorts and accented jumpers completed this fabulous new collection from COOP.  NB: The silver sequin shorts in this collection are simply divine!

I got to hang out backstage with Director of Makeup Artistry Asia-Pacific – James Molloy and interview James regarding the story behind the look that he and the MAC Cosmetics team created for COOP…  The key inspiration for COOP by Trelise Cooper is ‘An eclectic girl’, with a strong focus on texture.   talked to the texture featured throughout COOP’s latest collection, which showcased everything from holographic prints, tulle & metallics, through to chiffon, leather and lace.  To create this look James focused on a blown-out ultraviolet highlight for the cheeks & warm eye colour (I have to say the ultraviolet creation was absolutely stunning!!) and use the following products to do so – MAC Pro Longwear Concealer, Cream Colour Base in Luna, Black Black Chromagraphic Pencil, Extended Play Mascara & Frozen White Pigment.

Hailwood bought Savvy streetwear to the forefront through tailored denims that screamed ‘streetwear with sophistication’.   Next down the runway for Hailwood – Glamour! In abundance! Beautiful, feminine, sexy ‘old Hollywood’ graced the runway in high-glamour dresses, floaty chiffon, slinky silk and lace, embodied the 1940’s film starlets.  There is not a dress in the this collection that I don’t want to own – it would seem from this collection that Hailwood knows woman, better than, well, woman!

The key theme and inspiration for Hailwood – 40’s Silhouette.  The ‘beyond feminine’ film starlet vs the vampier vixen of the silver screen.  Led by James Molloy, this look was executed using antique colours on the eyes for both the starlet and the vixen. Whilst the film starlet sported a clear glass lip, the vampy vixen wore am almost blackened lip by combining a ‘current’ lip liner and fuchsia lip colour.  Items used to create these looks: Woodwinked on the eyes, Soft and Gentle on the face and both using the mineralise skinfinish.

Lela Jacobs – Runway
Floating slowly down the runway in what seemed like an almost catatonic state, models donned Lela Jacobs’ ‘de’ collection to the musical stylings of tzar behemoth playing live on stage.

Jacob’s favoured a monochromatic palette (mainly black), allowing her to explore and present fibre and texture as the ruling element.  Jacobs’ designs are versatile, highly wearable and each item appeared a masterpiece.    Minimalistic and understated, yet a collection so rich in technical patternmaking, combined with the use of high quality fabrics such as leather, cotton, silk and merino, the ‘de’ collection is thought-provoking and exquisite!

Jacob’s explains what ‘de’ means to her.  ‘de’ is a prefix – interrupting something, then reversing and undoing it, e.g. centralise – de-centralise, construct – deconstruct, the dominant given reality is a closely woven fabric. Loosen the weave, see what manifests. Between and beyond boundaries and borders, not just fashionable and industrial ones, but historical and cultural, geographical and political – geopolitical ones.

Company of Strangers – Runway
Situated in an underground car park, creating a dark and edgy atmosphere. Company of Strangers showcased their ‘Libertine’ collection.  A collection inspired by the paintings and drawings of Austrian Impressionist, Egon Schiele, whose work is characterised by its expressive linear style. Rich gem coloured pieces were scattered amongst company of strangers’ signature muted colour palette. Floaty, sheer dresses teamed with a range of jackets – leather, bombers, cape & cropped, accompanied oversized hats, beanies and knitwear.

Walking through a dark Nordic wood, follow the footprints in the snow and emerge into a world of hidden secrets and strange metamorphoses. Princesses emerge as swans, foals into princes, and the Northern Lights illuminate shadowy depths. “Scandinavia was a real inspiration this season,” explains Andrea Moore. “They have a tradition of mysterious stories and enchanted animals, quite Gothic and arcane, contrasted with a design aesthetic of such pure simplicity. And of course the whole region is so beautiful in winter.” Silhouettes are crisp and clean, sparkling with drops of ice captured inside Swarovski crystals. Ruffles add drama and easy glamour. The focus is on the waist and the graceful curve of the back, accentuated with the swoop of a zip featuring a romantic gold swan or silver deer. Capes, coats and bomber jackets envelop in soft drapes. Sporty grey marle sweatshirts are contrasted with star-struck silks. Bright houndstooth camouflages the modern hunter. A new stable of statement pants is introduced along with impeccably cut jeans in the finest Japanese denim, a signature horse prancing on the back pocket.

Zambesi – Runway

A full-fashion-house awaited the start of the Zambesi runway show.  Doing what these pioneers of NZFW do best, originality – the curtains revealed the entire backstage to the public – the models, the creative team, hair & makeup – all was on-show to give a true and accurate account of what goes into a showing from beginning to end.  A captured audience right from the get go.

Zambesi’s signature androgynous style and dark tones are still very much prominent in their latest collection.  A nod to kiwi-made recognised through their featured fern motif, set amongst a palette of NZ’s blue skies (ok not today maybe, but normally blue skies) and lush greenery, with another kiwiana feature coming through in their woollen pieces (I may have read into the kiwi thing a little too much, but it’s what caught my attention).  A delightful addition to the tonal palette was a pop of colour coming through with varying shades of red.

As expected – tailored, wearable, sophisticated fashion at it’s best and the ideal way to wrap up day one of NZFW – sitting front row at the forefront of fashion (see what I did there) with Zambesi.

Zambesi – Backstage Beauty With M.A.C Cosmetics
OK – so I know I mentioned that I got to catch up with James Molloy of MAC (and yes, that was amazing, and he is incredibly talented, not to mention lovely!) However, finally getting to meet with Amber D in person (not just over Twitter) I’m not gonna lie – the HIGHLIGHT of my day!  Amber D is the makeup artist that inspired me to become a qualified makeup artist myself.  She’s pretty much my makeup artist idol & one super talented, uber-cool chick!  Anyway, I digress, worry – onto the makeup look for Zambesi…

Led by MAC makeup artist – AmberD.  The key theme for Zambesi: ‘it’s all about the lips’.  Amber D took her lead from the ruby-red python leather featured in Zambesi’s new collection.  By keeping to a natural and clean look for the rest of the face, the focus was on the ruby-red lip featured on all the models.  Not just any red lip – the M.A.C Cosmetics team created each look using a number of shades to create the perfect red lip to accompany the python feature.  Once creating the perfect shade (and ensuring all the models had the exact same lip hue and shape – the lip-look was completed with a high shine, flawless gloss finish.
