Newspaper Nails…

Newspaper nails are so easy to do. This is a great tutorial for someone wanting fun nail art without too much hassle!  I’ve seen ‘newspaper nails’ around for a while now but hadn’t tried it myself until last night and I was pleasantly surprised with how quick and easy it was.  My ‘Step by Step’ tutorial will show you how to achieve this super cute look…

Here’s what you will need:

  • Light Coloured Nail Polish for the base (I’ve used OPI ‘s Did You Ear About Van Gogh?)
  • Alcohol (I recommend Vodka – not to drink!!) as it needs to be a white spirit. If you happen to have Rubbing Alcohol this is just as good
  • Newspaper
  • A small bowl (I recommend a deep lid/cap from a container)
  • Cotton pads
  • Cotton Buds/Cue tips
  • A Topcoat

STEPS:

1. Cut up a sheet of Newspaper into 10 pieces (slightly larger than your nails).

2. Paint your nails in a light grey or nude nail polish colour. Let it dry thoroughly before doing the next step.

3. Pour some alcohol into the cap or small container.

4. Dip a piece of newspaper into the alcohol for around 5 seconds and place, print side up, onto a cotton pad.

5. Press nail firmly onto the newspaper print and hold in place using the cotton pad for around 10-15 seconds (the cotton pad allows you to press firmly without smudging).

6. Lift your nail off the cotton pad/newspaper carefully. You’ll find that the ink from the newspaper will be left behind

7. Continue steps 4, 5 & 6 until you’ve competed each of your nails

8. Apply a topcoat to your nails. This will ensure the print wont smudge and gives your nails some extra shine.

If you have any print left around your nails, simply get a cotton bud and some nail polish remover to clean up your nails.

You can do this nail art with any newspaper print (unfortunately magazines won’t work as the paper is too glossy). A crossword cut into pieces would look kinda amazing too !

DIY Fashion Project: Trackie Pants to Cute Summer Boy Shorts (and there’s NO SEWING involved)…

Strut into summer by turning your favourite pair of trackie pants into sizzling boy shorts. The best part is THERE’S NO SEWING INVOLVED!!

These boy shorts are the brainchild of US based lingerie designer, Jenny Dombroski of Evlove Intimates; and this simple tutorial will show you how you too can create your very own unique pair of super cute summer boy shorts.

Materials:
Trackie/Workout pants
Ruler
Chalk
Scissors
Hemming tape*
Lace trim*
Parchment paper*
Ribbon*
Iron and ironing board
Safety pin

*You can get these items from stores such as Spotlight, Geoffs Emporium, Craft Stores, etc

Step by Step:

  1. Lay the tracksuit pants flat and measure your desired length (the inseam should be between one and a half and three inches); adding a curved slit at the outer leg is optional. Draw the cut line with chalk.
  2. Fold the sweatpants in half lengthwise and cut from the inseam outward.
  3. Slide one leg of the shorts onto your ironing board. Line the hemming tape along the bottom edge and place lace on top, covering the tape. Put parchment paper over it all and iron for eight seconds to adhere the lace. Repeat with other leg.
  4. Remove drawstring from shorts. Replace with a ribbon (use the safety-pin to guide the ribbon through the gap where you removed the drawstring from.  The safety-pin will make it easy to guide the ribbon around).

And… Super Cute Boy Shorts Complete!!

WIWT – Borrowing From My Guys Wardrobe….

When people say to me ‘describe your fashion style’, I can never narrow it down to one signature look.  I dress depending on my mood when I wake up in the morning and I like to mix up influences from street style, cinema and just whatever I conjure up in my head at the time.  I love boho chic, dressing girly, getting glammed up, and I would be lost without my super comfy boyfriend jeans. Another style I am quite partial to is an androgynous look, aka the ‘I raided my guys wardrobe’ look, is one of my favourites.

I’ve always lived by the mantra ‘money can’t buy style or class’ and with this in mind I love the challenge of hunting through a store I wouldn’t normally shop at, or a store that doesn’t stock designer/well-known brands (don’t get me wrong, I do love my designer brands too) with the aim of finding an item of clothing I can make work OR raiding my guys wardrobe to see what I can take from his wardrobe, to make work with mine – YEAH he’s finding out about this at the same time you are.  Thanks for letting me ‘borrow’ your shirt 🙂

What I Wore Today/OOTD……

  1. MECCANO:  Striped Mens Shirt with ‘sleeve braces’ aka my guy’s shirt, which I decided I really love and had to wear on this warm yet overcast/rainy day.  It’s an XL Mens Shirt, so it’s a great length for shorts! I just adore the little sleeve braces – very preppy!! He has another shirt I have my eye on that I’m going to wear as a shirt dress with a little tan belt and sandals.
  2. Max: black shorts
  3. Soda: Black and cork wedges
  4. Daniel Wellington: Watch (love love LOVE this watch!!)
  5. Karen Walker: Jewellery
  6. Boohoo.com: Tan studded bag
  7. Versace: Sunglasses

The Prettiest Salad Of Them All…

POMEGRANATE & KUMARA SALAD…

This is currently my favourite salad.  Not only is it delicious but visually, SOOO PRETTY!!  I discovered this on one of my favourite foodie blogs by Jeanine Donofrio called Love & Lemons and I have been making it for every occasion ever since.

Perfect for summer – this salad is ALWAYS a hit and guaranteed there will ALWAYS be someone asking after the recipe.
It’s festive, fun and simply divine!

In essence, it’s roasted kumara tossed with tangy feta, sweet pomegranate seeds & toasted pistachios. This is so incredibly simple to throw together – even I can do it!

Salad components:

  • 2 medium kumaras, cubed, plus olive oil, salt & pepper for roasting
  • 2 cups baby salad greens (baby kale, spinach, arugula, etc.)
  • 1/3 cup pomegranate seeds
  • 1/3 cup crumbled feta
  • 1/4 cup toasted pistachios, toasted & chopped
  • handful of chopped cilantro
  • 2-3 chopped scallions, white and green parts

Dressing:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 clove minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon sherry vinegar or white wine vinegar
  • salt & pepper, to taste

 Instructions:

  1. Roast the kumara: Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Celsius. Chop the kumara into bite sized cubes. Drizzle with some olive oil, salt and pepper, and roast in the oven for 20-30 minutes, or until the edges start to turn a darker brown. Once cooked, set aside to cool.
  2. Make the dressing: Whisk together olive oil, vinegar, honey, garlic, salt & pepper. Taste & adjust. Set aside.
  3. Assemble all salad ingredients, toss lightly in the dressing.

And you’re done!  If you’re not a fan of kumara just swap it out for ingredients you do like, such as potato or roast pumpkin.

Caviar & Velvet On My Nails Please…

Textured nails are in hot demand and Caviar & Velvet mani’s are leading the way for this textured trend.

Basically what it involves is painting your nails with polish and then applying hundreds of tiny microbeads on top of each nail, making it appear as though they are decorated with caviar, or ‘hundreds & thousands’ if you go for the multi coloured look. For the ‘velvet mani’ – same process, paint nails and then apply a velvet dust, giving you a rich, matte, velvety nail.

UK Based Ciaté have made these nail looks easy & achievable with their ‘Caviar and Velvet Nail Kits’ so that you can DIY to your heart’s content.  On my hit list is the beautiful Caviar kit in Mother of Pearl.

The Velvet Kit:  The finished effect is unlike any other, giving an indulgent velvety coat to your manicure. Simply divine! Kit contains: 1 Paint Pot, 1 pot of luxurious crushed velvet powder and 1 little black brush.

The Caviar Kit: The finished effect gives nails an instant rich & sophisticated look. Kit contains: 1 pot of Caviar Beads, 1 Paint Pot.

OPI Announces Latest Collaboration…

OPI Products Inc. announced their latest collaboration today with multiple Grammy Award winning and multi-platinum selling recording artist Mariah Carey. A five-time Grammy Award winning global superstar with over 200 million records sold worldwide and 18 Billboard No. 1 singles (more than any solo artist in history), Carey will be the inspiration for a line of OPI limited edition nail lacquers that will launch January 2013.

Now the reason I’m so excited about this collection in particular is because the brand is using this collaboration to introduce a brand-new type of nail finish called Liquid Sand. Four of these “Stage Shades” (as opposed to the normal “Studio Shades”) feature a textured, matte finish when worn without a topcoat. The Liquid Sand nail lacquer offers a ‘never before seen’ look with a pebbled finish that lightly shimmers with fine glitter (whilst somehow still remaining matte).

I can’t wait to get my hands on ‘A Butterfly Moment’ – a sophisticated nude, that in my view, is a must-have from the Mariah collection.

Nail Art – How To Paint Nail Designs Perfectly On Both Hands!! (you don’t need to be ambidextrous)…

ImageSource: ChelleOnPinterest

Ever wanted to paint pretty designs on your nails but found that it was impossible to DIY because you have one dominant hand that’s brilliant at drawing designs and the other hand that’s, well, not so much? Here’s a solution!  Prepare your designs before applying to your nails….

You will need:
Nail Polish
Ziploc BAg – like a sandwich bag or something similar (not cling wrap as it’s just too flimsy)
Clear Top Coat
A Hairdryer (if you’re impatient)
A Nail File

– First, paint your designs onto a Ziploc bag (as I’ve done in the below pics).  You will need to do fairly thick
coats and probably around 2 coats in total.
– Allow each coat to fully dry before applying the next coat (this is where you may want to use a hair dryer set
at ‘cool’)
– Apply a base coat to your nails
– Peel your designs off the Ziploc bag and place them on your nails
– Finish with a topcoat and viola – you’re done!

If you find that the design is hanging slightly over the end of your nail, use a nail file to gently file away any stray ends.  Then apply your top coat.

Happy DIY!

Bobbi Brown Flagship Store Launch…

Last week saw the official media launch of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics’ first free-standing store in Auckland.  The exclusive line developed by celebrated makeup artist Bobbi Brown, brings the ‘you, but better’ brand experience to life with the opening of the flagship store located in the fashionable Britomart Precinct.  The Store is an expression of Bobbi’s unique philosophy and aesthetic; and the perfect way for consumers to discover Bobbi’s range of colour cosmetics, brushes, fragrance, skin care and expert services.

A stylish soiree with live music, delicious Veuve Clicquot, caviar and oysters.  A standout for me has to be the lovely ladies of Bobbi Brown – what a breath of fresh air they all are.  Not only were they incredibly helpful (without being in your face!), bursting with beauty industry knowledge and passionate about their brand, they made me feel like I was chatting with a friend whilst I asked them, what felt like a million questions, about all the different products and which product best met my needs.  A rare, yet very much appreciated quality indeed!  Oh and they didn’t bat an eyelid at the many colour swatches I tested on, well, pretty much every square inch of my hands and arms!

Here’s a sneak peek of the seamlessly executed launch of the Bobbi Brown Flagship store…
