Giant Knitting Needles & Stunning Wearable Works…

Giant Knitting Needles Create Stunning Wearable Works…

We’re crazy about Anna Mo‘s über chunky blankets, scarves and rugs [see: obsessed]. Anna Mo‘s knits are not shy about their pattern, the soft form of her objects forcing the wearer to observe the pieces in all of their magnified glory. To knit these mammoth material works the Ukraine-based Mo not only uses extremely thick sections of wool, but also XXL needles to produce her three-inch-thick stitches. In addition to her wearable works, Mo also sells the yarn that she uses to produce the pieces (100% Australian merino wool) as well as oversized knitting needles so you can produce your own chunky sweaters and blankets.

8 Fashion Hacks That Will Change Your Life

8 Fashion Hacks That Will Change Your Life

As a costume designer in Hollywood, Alison Freer has made a career out of making very attractive people look even better. And she’s no stranger to solving high-stakes fashion emergencies. (Broken zippers! stains! VPL!)

In her new book, How to Get Dressed, she offers up industry secrets for making your clothes look and fit better… and for solving wardrobe malfunctions before they turn disastrous.

How do you deal with ill-fitting shoes and the pain they cause? Is not buying them the only solution? Nope. A piece of moleskin where the shoe badly fits will do the trick (and it can also help repair an underwire bra!). Moleskin, together with safety pins and topstick (double-sided tape), can solve pretty much any wardrobe malfunction you’ll ever experience.

From taming pokey underwire to eliminating VPL, here are eight of her most clever tricks.

1. Stop the Pop
Notice the pockets on your dress pants popping open when you sit or stand? Bring those puppies to a tailor and have the pockets sewn shut. (Who uses pants pockets anyway?)

8 Fashion Hacks That Will Change Your Life

2. Quell the Smell
We need to talk: Your cute little ballet flats smell like a middle-school locker room. To keep embarrassing odours at bay, fill a pair of old socks with baking soda, tie each one in a knot and stuff them into the stinky shoes in between wearings.

8 Fashion Hacks That Will Change Your Life

3. Down Boy
To keep a flapping belt end in place, secure it to itself with a tiny piece of Topstick tape.

8 Fashion Hacks That Will Change Your Life

4. Never Come Up Short
Hemming your denim is a beautiful thing, but to avoid over-hemming, be sure to wash and dry your jeans at least once before bringing them to the tailor. This gets all the shrinkage out of their system so you won’t end up going too short.

8 Fashion Hacks That Will Change Your Life

5. A Poke Is No Joke
Underwire sticking out of your favourite bra? Patch the protrusion with a bit of moleskin. It’ll hold the wire in place and keep it from poking you in the boobs.

8 Fashion Hacks That Will Change Your Life

6. Tight Squeeze with Ease
As a general rule, it’s best to buy shoes that fit. But if you must cram your feet into slightly too-small heels, take a cue from one of Freer’s celeb clients (she won’t say who) and spray your tootsies with cooking spray first. You heard us: cooking spray.

8 Fashion Hacks That Will Change Your Life

7. Skip the Line
If you ever need to fix a VPL stat, snip the seams of your underwear on the sides to release the pressure of the elastic digging into your flesh.

8 Fashion Hacks That Will Change Your Life

8. There Will Be Blood
The best stain fighter for blood? Your own saliva. Just lick and rub the fabric for an instant spot-remover. (Note: We’re talking about a little bit of blood. Not horror-movie quantities.)

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

When it comes to personal style, we rely on input from any number of sources: our favourite blogs, our chicest friends, street-style inspiration, Olivia Palermo (absolute fave). Our newest consultant? Google.

The search-engine-giant recently released its Spring 2015 Fashion Trends Report, and despite being a report, it’s actually really interesting. Basically, by taking the fashion terms that people are and aren’t searching for and comparing those numbers to years past, Google has determined, in a nutshell, what’s hot and what’s not (respectfully, most of these trends have already arrived in full force, or already left the scene, as the case may be).

Here’s what Google is predicting…

About To Take Off (fair to say this is already trending): The Midi Skirt
This super-flattering skirt has been steadily on the rise for a few years and is poised for a breakout this spring and summer. (Ahem, we heralded the style back in 2013.) Worn sleek and tight or high-waisted and floaty, the middle child is finally getting its due, and we recommend getting in on the action.

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

About To Take Off: The Tulle Skirt
Blame Carrie Bradshaw or ballerinas, but this ultra-feminine style has been creeping up the Google ranks in recent years. And we love it! A little tip: pair it with tougher pieces, like a biker jacket, to avoid comparisons to Clara from The Nutcracker.

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

About To Take Off: Palazzo Pants
These guys get a bad rap, but we’re all about rocking this easy, breezy trend. The key here is balancing proportions. Pair wide, billowy pants with a more fitted top, lest you get lost in the fabric.

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

In For Now: Shift Dresses
Shift dresses have been around forever; we’re not big fans, however, we can agree that they’re effortless and have a throw-on-and-go sensibility; and for pretending we’re Jackie O summering on Nantucket.

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

In For Now: High-Waisted Bikinis
We’ve long loved this cut for its leg-lengthening powers, but it seems to be especially on-trend this summer.

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

Fleeting Trend: Neoprene Swimsuits
Unlike their high-waisted counterparts, neoprene suits are a more time-sensitive fad. Sure, you’ll wear the hell out of it this summer, but come 2016…. who knows? Our advice: If you’re trend-crazy, go for it. Just don’t blow an entire month’s rent on one. Truth be known, if we never see another gaggle of girls wearing these, it’ll be too soon, #overtrend!

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

Fleeting Trend: Kale Sweatshirts
Another “here today, gone tomorrow” pick: quirky sweatshirts. If you’re into clothing emblazoned with your favourite green, go for it, but we’ll be skipping this one, thank you very much.

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

On The Way Out: Peplum Dresses
Peplums had a pretty long 15 minutes, but based on a few years of decreased searches, Google has proclaimed them officially dead. RIP, poufy middles. Feel free to never come back!

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

On The Way Out: String Bikinis
And with that, 99.9 percent of the world’s female population rejoices.

Fashion Trends According to Google: The Search Engine Style Forecaster

Cooling Off: Skinny Jeans
It seems our beloved skinnies are falling out of fashionable favour. We’ll still wear them, but we’ll also look to other styles like flares and boyfriend jeans. And don’t fret, we’ve got all your denim needs covered in our Denim Trend Report.

MAC Cosmetics – Wash & Dry Collection

MAC Cosmetics - Wash & Dry Collection

It’s full steam ahead as the M·A·C Wash & Dry Laundromat opens for business, so make a date with good, clean fun.  The suds are rising and the gossip is flowing with this breezy bronzing collection inspired by bright, fresh hues perfect for a full spin or just a quick tumble. All in super-sleek packaging to set your cycle to chic!

MAC Cosmetics - Wash & Dry Collection
Yes, it’s a new limited collection from MAC! Yes, it’s amazing! Yes, I’m once again giddy with excitement, as I am about everything MAC releases. But what’s so special about this collection? What are the standouts, I hear you say. Well, thanks for asking; you know when it comes to MAC, I’m only too happy to answer…

Firstly, let me just make mention of the fabulous sleek packaging; as with MAC’s Alluring Aquatics Collection (yes, still swooning) this is one for my fellow ‘MAC collectors’!  Bright, fun and colourful, during these cooler months here in New Zealand, we’ll forever be reminded of the warm weather with this summer-inspired packaging.

MAC Cosmetics - Wash & Dry Collection
While there’s no one particular item I don’t love in this collection, my absolute standouts are:

MAC Freshen Up Highlight Powder – although MAC Freshen Up is defined as a highlighter powder, it is also a blush with three shades. I adore this colour combination. It’s multi-purpose, soft, shimmery and borderline ethereal. The powder is finely milled, it’s not powdery nor stiff; and if you’re in the market for a customisable, super-pretty blush & highlighter, Freshen Up is something you shouldn’t miss from MAC’s Wash & Dry Collection.

Morange Lipstick – a vivid orange-red with an amplified finish. There is something about this colour with the gorgeous limited edition packaging. I wore this one today, applied one coat and blotted to apply again. Boom, lipstick sorted for all-day wear! It’s very long-lasting and I could wear it without a liner. There’s also no drying or flaking – bonus! Morange wears beautifully with the Freshen Up Highlight Powder. I do love that MAC thinks about their collections in-depth; every collection works together seamlessly.

Veluxe Pearlfusion Shadow Trio – I’m sorry, I can’t tell you which is best, these are all just too damn perfect to choose one trio. Ok, if I have to say one, I guess I’ll say Warm Wash (only because that’s what I’m wearing today) but honestly, they’re all amazing, they’re all MAC perfection, they’re all pure luxury!

Check out the collection here and get ready to head in-store the moment the collection releases to ensure you don’t miss out. For kiwis, this limited collection drops 1 June 2015…

Hats Off To The MAC x Philip Treacy Collaboration…

Hats Off To The MAC x Philip Treacy Collaboration...

The recent announcement of the collaboration between MAC and Philip Treacy, once again, as MAC always does, captured our attention and drew many-a-delight at such a wonderful, artistic collab…

Hats Off To The MAC x Philip Treacy Collaboration...

MAC plays perfectly on artistic contrasts, inviting singers, fashion designers and now, milliners to collaborate . Texture, colour, packaging, nothing escapes the MAC creativity wheel, of which is constantly spinning. MAC x Philip Treacy represents a unique partnership – London’s leading couture hat designer collaborating with the world’s boldest makeup brand.

Irish-born milliner Philip Treacy has made hats for pretty much every famous head you can think of: Kate Middleton, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Sarah Jessica Parker, Victoria Beckham. (Fun fact: He also made that famous hat Princess Beatrice wore to the Royal Wedding—the one that launched a thousand memes.) Shortly after the Royal Wedding, in fact, M.A.C approached Treacy about doing a cosmetics collection. Now, almost four years later, the fruits of that collaboration are available in the form of three bright lipsticks, two beautiful fairy dust embossed blushes, three eye liners that would make a peacock jealous, and two shimmery metallic shadows. The collection was inspired by–what else?–three different yet equally stunning hats Treacy created.

Available on counter now, check out the beautiful MAC x Philip Treacy collection…

Style Sessions: The Flared Denim Trend

Style Sessions: The Flared Denim Trend

High waisted flares may be this years biggest denim trend – but seriously, when was this elongating silhouette ever out of style?! We’ve always loved our hip hugging, 70s inspired denim, as these are the pants that make your legs look super long (especially when worn with heels).

Not to be confused with boot-cut or wide-legged denim, flares become wider from the knee down. Also known as bell bottoms, and instantly add sophistication to any outfit.

A few closet staples include MiH’s super flattering Marrakesh High Kick flares, Rag & Bone’s looser fitting Justine Wide Leg jeans, and newcomer Frame’s dark washed Forever Karlie jeans. And, for those of you based in NZ & Australia, you can’t go past Rollas’ Eastcoast Faded Bondi Flares, which we’ve just purchased online via goodasgold.co.nz for an absolute bargain at $149.  Our ‘lust list’ and next purchase has got to be the Rollas’ Eastcoast Flare Overall (and if they were to exist, we sure would love to get our hands on a dark-denim version of the Eastcoast Bondi Flares).

The Intriguing ‘Little Ghost’

little ghost new zealand leather goods

People often ask me, in the world of blogging, “what’s the best thing you’ve ever received? What’s the most fun thing you’ve received? What’s your favourite discovery via blogging to date? What’s the worst thing you’ve received that you really didn’t like?” To be honest, that’s not really what it’s all about for me, and in turn I find these questions very hard to answer. Yes, receiving things to preview before anyone else is of course great, and I’m still very excited to discover new fashion, beauty, lifestyle items every day, but that’s not why I’m in the blogging game. I genuinely love writing, I genuinely love discovering and sharing new finds; I receive a number of items every day, and yes, it’s true, I’m one of those bloggers that generally won’t write about things in a negative light, if I don’t like something, I simply don’t write about it (journalism 101, if it doesn’t interest you and you’re not passionate about it, it’s going to be a tenuous task to write about it).

Now, ask me, ‘what’s the most intriguing discovery you’ve made through blogging’ and it’s a whole new ball game! That to me is easier to answer… discovering items, stores, brands, etc, that, if I wasn’t in the blogging game, I might not have discovered so quickly. For example – Junk & Disorderly, Antique Ally, The Bread & Butter Letter, Lindi Kingi, Ribbon On A Bombshell, well, you get the picture; it’s these finds that I cherish the most, especially those that become a never-ending ‘treasure trove’ discovery; which segues nicely into ‘little ghost’…
