Style Icon Iris Apfel's Film Debut - Check Out The Trailer Here…

I’m obsessed with a woman I’ve never met! Its been this way for years. Is it possible to adore someone such as Iris Apfel, despite the fact I’ve never uttered a word to her? The answer is yes! Iris Apfel is one of the most incredible, inspiring, intelligent, simply incredible, women of all time…

MUST SEE: Style Icon Iris Apfel's Film Debut - Check Out The Trailer Here…

When Iris Apfel was a young woman from Queens, New York, starting out in the fashion industry, Frieda Loehmann, founder of the famed department store, took her aside: “She said, ‘You’re not pretty and you’ll never be pretty, but it doesn’t matter. You have something much better. You have style.’ ”

Apfel will be turning 94 this August, but she doesn’t seem to be stepping out of the fashion spotlight anytime soon. Her career took off when she worked as an interior designer for the White House, although she is not supposed to talk about it, according to the documentary trailer. She eventually became a style icon with her wide, thick-rimmed glasses and vast collection of costume jewellery. Despite her impeccable fashion sense, Apfel is not one to judge because “it’s better to be happy then well-dressed.” Don’t you just love her?

MUST SEE: Style Icon Iris Apfel's Film Debut - Check Out The Trailer Here…

Iris is the subject of a new documentary, out next month, by Albert Maysles—who, with his late brother David, directed such classics as Gimme Shelter and Grey Gardens (oh, Grey Gardens; this is one of my favourite doco’s! If you haven’t seen it, you must). Without Apfel, whose idiosyncratic style and Mr. Magoo-size eyewear inspired a 2005–6 exhibition at the Met, we would likely not be seeing the rise of the senior supermodel: Joan Didion for Céline, Charlotte Rampling for Nars, Jessica Lange for Marc Jacobs Beauty, Joni Mitchell for Yves Saint Laurent. Apfel herself is the new face of Kate Spade.

MUST SEE: Style Icon Iris Apfel's Film Debut - Check Out The Trailer Here…

This “rare bird of fashion,” as she is now known, first came to prominence in the 1950s, when she and her husband, Carl—who turned 100 during filming—founded Old World Weavers, a textile company hired by nine presidents for White House restorations. In Iris, we see Apfel mingle with Bruce Weber, Jenna Lyons, and Kanye West, while behind the closed doors of her Park Avenue apartment she quietly grapples with old age. Fashion, she says, never keeps her up at night. “Matters of health and things like that [do]. Things that are really important.”

Check out the trailer here:

I cannot wait to devour this fashion film. After watching the trailer, who’s with me?!

Seed & French Connection Touch Down In New Zealand…

Seed & French Connection Touch Down In New Zealand...

It’s always exciting to see globally recognised fashion labels set up shop in New Zealand; and today marks the arrival of both French Connection and Seed.

Unveiling the Autumn/Winter 2015 collections, media got an advanced preview of the beautiful new ranges New Zealand can expect to see when both brands open their doors in late March.

Seed & French Connection Touch Down In New Zealand...

SEED
The scene is set for Autumn Winter 2015 – a tightly curated, effortlessly modern collection designed to build the cornerstone of a cutting edge new season wardrobe.

This winter heralds a return to sculptural line and structure. The female form is the star attraction, complemented by strong silhouettes and body conscious cuts. Think powerful shoulders, belted waists and form-fitting dresses. Texture is also key – Mongolian faux fur is luxurious whilst fringing adds a bohemian edge. Leather emerges as a season hero, whilst marled yarns soften its impact. The neutrals to wear now materialise as stone and caramel, graduating to cooler shades of charcoal, the grey of the moment! Khaki punctuates black in a rebooted take on military chic, whilst midnight and navy are romantic for winter.

Look out for the new Seed store opening late March, in Nuffield St, Newmarket and Ponsonby.

FRENCH CONNECTION
An understated tone embodies the French Connection Autumn Winter 2015 collection with a fresh take on relaxed luxury. Unique pieces exuding modernity and classic styles stand up against a neutral palette of black, white and cooler shades of grey. Khaki accentuates black in an updated take on military chic, while animal print is punctuated in opulent tones.

For Autumn’s crisp temperatures an arsenal of pullovers, cardigans and turtlenecks is in order. Zip detailing, stitch design and oversized silhouettes update traditional knitwear.

Capes emerge as the season’s key piece in an array of contemporary designs. Blanket wraps are an off-duty transeasonal favourite when paired with boyfriend jeans and minimalist tops. Jackets and vests are complemented by strong silhouettes with timeless appeal. Think luxurious textures, tailored fits, beautifully belted waists and simple detailing.

Look out for the new French Connection store opening late March in Nuffield St, Newmarket.

Here are just a few of the pieces that caught our eye at today’s media event…

CHANEL Transforms Runway Into Tropical Greenhouse To Debut S/S 2015 Haute Couture Collection

CHANEL Transforms Runway Into Tropical Greenhouse To Debut S/S 2015 Haute Couture Collection

Didn’t make front row at the Chanel runway show? Watch the video here… Karl Lagerfeld has an unrivalled knack for creating a runway show that inevitably becomes the most talked about event of the season; the latest Chanel S/S Haute Couture runway show is no exception, as Mr Lagerfeld transformed the event space into a lush tropical greenhouse, where blooms opened and grew right before the very eyes of the audience.

CHANEL Transforms Runway Into Tropical Greenhouse To Debut S/S 2015 Haute Couture Collection

The French fashion house saw bold block coloured dresses, tulle flourishes in pastel shades, and boisterous head accessories down the runway. And in true Lagerfeld style, he has once again managed to turn the humble into haute as he shone the spotlight on beanies, which were ethereally delicate in appearance, spun from cashmere and possibly fairy’s wings, then scattered with jewels and appliqued chiffon flowers. No word as yet on how much they will sell for. Whatever – they’ll still be a cult, and much copied.

Spotted in the front row were Chanel ambassador’s Vanessa Paradis, Kristen Stewart and Alice Dellal, who have also been handpicked by Karl Lagerfeld to feature in upcoming ad campaigns with the latest handbags. Stay tuned for more beautiful images later in the year.

Literary Icon Joan Didion Is The New Face Of Fashion House Céline

Literary Icon Joan Didion Is The New Face Of Fashion House Céline

She’s the American literary heavyweight whose cult status rivals that of any contemporary supermodel. So French fashion house Céline made a very smart move indeed when they singled out novelist and playwright Joan Didion as the muse for their spring 2015 campaign.

Creative director Phoebe Philo selected the 80-year-old author, who has penned classics Play It as It Lays and Slouching Towards Bethlehem, to epitomise the label’s minimal, pseudo-intellectual vibe.

The first photo from the campaign, shot by Juergen Teller, shows Didion posing in a black turtleneck with oversized sunglasses and a giant gold pendant necklace.

It’s the kind of effortlessly stylish look that has seen Didion lauded by fashion commentators in recent years, in addition to her stalwart fan base of literary admirers.

Designer Philo has a good eye for movers and shakers in the fashion industry, having been named last year among Time magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2014.

A key element of American literary culture, Didion began her career in the  New York office of Vogue magazine. In 1964, she married writer John Gregory Dunne and the pair moved to California, where they later adopted a baby daughter named Quintana Roo.

They became a central part of a reactionary community of West Coast writers in the 1960s that included Norman Mailer, Tom Wolfe and Hunter Thompson. It was during this time that Didion wrote her seminal collection of essays Slouching Towards Bethlehem  and her critically acclaimed second novel, Play It As it Lays.

In 2003, tragedy struck Didion after her husband and then her daughter died suddenly in succession.

In her later works, including the books The Year of Magical Thinking and Blue Nights, she explores the heartbreaking loss she suffered.

“Crying all the time—that’s not what happens,” Didion said, in a 2011 interview about her experience of grief. “You become crazy. I found quotes from Freud and Melanie Klein where they call grief a form of psychosis we don’t treat. We let it run its course.

“I had spent so much of my life guarding against being raw. I mean, part of growing up for me was getting a finish, an impenetrable polish. And suddenly to be thrown back to this fourteen-year-old helplessness…”

She said writing Magical Thinking – a process that took less than three months – was like “sitting down at the typewriter and bleeding. Some days I’d sit with tears running down my face”.

After she wrote the two books, Didion expressed the need to do something new.

“I’m feeling very strongly the need to do something in another vein,” she said, in another interview in 2011. “I don’t know what that vein will be, but I want to find it.”

This campaign for Céline certainly marks an entry into new territory for the novelist, although it is not the first time a big-name fashion or beauty brand has sought to reach out to a more mature calibre of poster girl.

Most recently, Dame Helen Mirren, 69, was selected as the face of L’Oreal Paris alongside 75-year-old Jane Fonda, while 69-year-old Charlotte Rampling has modelled for Nars lipstick.
