Inside Grace Coddington’s Apartment

Inside Grace Coddington's Apartment

Recently the WSJ took us inside the home of fashion icon and Vogue‘s creative director – Grace Coddington. And while they focused more on Miss Coddington’s collection of nudes and her penchant for being a hoarder, our focus was on solely on everyone’s “dream best friend”. This once-in-a-lifetime insight into Grace Coddington’s world coincides with an online auction she’s curating this month with Auction House Paddle8.

Better known for her Midas touch when it comes to clothes and creating fashion editorials both magical and enchanting beyond our wildest dreams, Grace is indeed a self-proclaimed hoarder. Her Chelsea apartment and weekend home in the Hamptons, of which she shares with her boyfriend – hairstylist Didier Malige, is filled with collections of photographs (mainly nudes), English ceramics, cardboard boxes (orange Hermès and black-and-white Balenciaga being her favourites) folk art and (admittedly this cemented our love for her) anything to do with cats.

Inside Grace Coddington's Apartment

Coddington’s modelling career began with a nude photograph back in 1959, so it’s really no surprise that Grace was approached by Paddle8 to curate an auction centred around nude photography. As told to Tim Blanks of the Wall Street Journal during their interview… Coddington assumed that when Alexander Gilkes, co-founder of the online auction house Paddle8, first approached her it wasn’t because of her knack with nudes. “I thought it would be fashion pictures, so I said yes, and then it turned out to be portraits,” says Coddington. “If there’s one thing I’m known for, it’s ‘Don’t crop a picture.’ I want the feet in it. So portraits weren’t working for me. And they didn’t want fashion pictures—I guess they don’t sell for as much—so then they said nudes.”

“We felt it was the best way to celebrate the artist and the quality of photography,” says Gilkes. “Strip away the clothes and focus on the nude.” Hence the title of the auction slightly arch in light of Coddington’s role as the creative director of Vogue: “No Clothes.”Even though she was keen to curate something within the area for which she is best known, she made peace with its polar opposite by reconceptualizing the nude as a kind of canvas for her work. “We start out on a fashion shoot with a girl who has no clothes on, and we build from that: the hair, the makeup, the clothes. But she starts with nothing.”

Grace more than exceeded our “dream-best-friend”expectations – wonderfully down to earth, cat-mad, eclectic and passionate  . . . everything we imagined and more. Oh, and if you missed the video of her cooking steak and potatoes with Elettra Wiedemann last year, it is as much a “must-see” as the photographic entry into Grace’s apartment…

Beautiful Editorials: Murakami’s Fashion Monsters

Beautiful Editorials: Murakami's Fashion Monsters

What a delightful and unique editorial!  Harper’s BAZAAR and executive fashion editor Laura Brown tapped Japanese artist Takashi Murakami and his“monsters” for a fashion shoot in the streets of Los Angeles. Murakami is well-known for blurring the conceptual lines between high art and low art, and has recently crossed over into commercial mediums like fashion.

The lovely monsters pose alongside Angela Lindvall in mundane, yet surreal situations such as In’N Out Burger and Rodeo Drive, portraying the unexpected in an expected situation. This is MONSTER MAGIC….

A Royal Affair With Peter Alexander

A Royal Affair With Peter Alexander

Pyjama king – Peter Alexander touched down in New Zealand this week for the NZ leg of his Royal Mother’s Day Tour!  This tour sees the launch of Peter’s Royal Mother’s Day catalogue and to celebrate this royal collaboration, Peter brought to NZ official royal lookalikes “Will” and “Kate”.

A Royal Affair With Peter Alexander

Loyal customers lined up outside Peter Alexander’s Sylvia Park store as far back as the eye could see, waiting patiently to rub shoulders with not only Peter, but also royal doppelgängers – Will and Kate.  I was lucky enough to catch up with Peter, Will and Kate before the hoards of fans entered the store, and I had an absolute ball getting some exclusive snaps and checking out all the amazing new sleepwear garments on offer in the Peter Alexander Royal Mother’s Day catalogue.

A Royal Affair With Peter Alexander

Check out my moments captured with Peter and the “royals”, and while your checking out my fun snaps, take a look at the super-cute & fun garments featured in the ‘Royal Mother’s Day catalogue’ (I’m sorry, but how freakn awesome is ‘Queenie’ in her onesie?!) shot on location in London by well-known photographer, Alison Jackson, starring the whole cast of the official Royal Lookalikes…

The Anatomy Of A Louis Vuitton

the anatomy of a louis vuitton

Ever since I was of an age that I could appreciate and understand Louis Vuitton, I promised myself that one day I would own my very own LV.  Many years later, purchasing my very first Louis was for me a ‘I’ve arrived’ moment.  Fast forward 10+ years and a few LV’s later, the obsession has never waned!  There is never a moment quite as special as purchasing an LV and I’ve now amassed quite a collection – some gifts, some saved for, regardless – each one loved as much as the other.

Now, maybe it’s my love for all things fashionable (admittedly many bags from various brands have been purchased over the years to amount to the size of a handbag store), or maybe it’s my DIY’er side showing through, regardless of which it is, you can appreciate why seeing this bag deconstructed, all the elements compartmentalised into pieces and getting an insight into the process it takes to become its destiny, is quite simply, a beautiful thing.

the anatomy of a louis vuitton

In this ‘Anatomy of a Louis Vuitton’, via crfashionbook, one of the world’s most iconic accessories is deconstructed to tell their story. Accompanied by exclusive imagery, LV shows us exactly what goes into creating the LV Speedy Bag.  Retailing for a cool $6,500, this is the Louis Vuitton Speedy in embossed python…

The Louis Vuitton monogram has been graffiti’d, Murakami’d, embroidered, fringed, cut, pasted, and collaged in a myriad of fabrics, styles, and eye-popping treatments.

This season, the latest LV must-have speaks its must-haveness at a lower decibel than some of its forebears as the brand emphasizes quality and craft. Take, for example, the new Speedy bag in python, a paragon of handbag production that requires over 400 technical maneuvers in fabrication to realize. The most challenging aspect being, that while each python hide measures up to 8 meters long, they are not very wide, so several skins must be “matched” to obtain perfect symmetry and even coloring. It’s the kind of unparalleled attention to detail that makes an LV an LV.

Beautiful Editorials: Annie Leibovitz’s Disney Dream Portraits

Beautiful Editorials: Annie Leibovitz's Disney Dream Portraits

World renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz has been capturing shots of celebrities as popular Disney characters for years as part of her ongoing collection of Disney Dream Portraits. The latest addition to her portfolio of work is Academy Award nominated actress Jessica Chastain as the fiery-haired Merida from the animated feature film Brave.

Leibovitz’s series takes beloved cartoon characters from the classic Disney films and transforms them into live-action versions of themselves with the help of a few celebrities. While not all of the photographer’s renditions are direct copies of their cartoon counterparts, they offer a sense of magic and fantasy come to life.

While Scarlett Johansson looks like a real-life Cinderella who has lost her slipper as she escapes the Prince’s ball, a brown-haired Beyoncé offers a new perspective for Alice in Wonderland. Even the ageless Peter Pan is matured as Russian dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov portrays the playful young boy….

New Shoes – The Latest From Mr. W & Me

Mr W and Me 2014 latest shoe range and winter boots

If you follow me on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook you will have seen that my latest delivery arrived last week from my fave online boutique shoe store – Mr. W & Me.  Not only did my new winter boots arrive, but on popping back to the site (as I regularly do) I discovered that Mr. W & Me has loaded their new line of Italian loafers.

As far as I’m concerned, no one does Italian leather loafers like Mr. W & Me. It was actually through finding my gold loafers (Sweet Revenge) quite some time ago, that my infatuation for Mr. W & Me began. Click the ‘jump’ to read my original post on this fab online shoe store & my gold-shoe find: Gurlinterrupted/TheMysteriousMrWandMe

I’ve had many amazing shoes from Mr. W & Me since my first find, and my latest delivery of winter boots is no exception.  So I figured since I promised to show you what I chose from their winter boot selection, why not feature their latest drop of Italian leather loafers while I’m at it.  Ok, truth be told, I may have also given in to the temptation of a new pair of loafers while I was perusing the range, so I’ll let you know which ones “I just had to have”….

Well Aren’t These Just #thesh*t

Because who wouldn’t want embroidered poop emblazoned across their beautiful Italian loafers?!

Fashion industry favourite – Edie Parker, has teamed up with legendary shoemaker – Del Toro, to design exclusively for online boutique Moda Operandi, the emoji loafer & purse collection, aptly named “M’oticons”.

emoji-loafersI’ve been pondering the M’oticons range since their launch and quite honestly, my brain still doesn’t quite know how to process any of it!  Don’t get me wrong, I love communicating in emoji as much as the next person, online!  And it does combine two of my favourite things, symbols and hashtags, again, online! (and not in overkill) But on my shoes? Well, I’m just not sure I’m feelin it.

OK, let’s start with the poop shoe, or more accurately #theshit – yes, they named this slick slipper #theshit.  Now, enter the price tag, circa US$340.  So, just to clarify… two fashion industry faves have collaborated to create a line of fabulous Italian loafers, of which they’ve embroidered with various emojis, one of which is called #theshit.  It doesn’t end there – you can also treat yourself to #Dabomb loafer (with a bomb and fire on each shoe), #QueenBee (featuring the queen and bee emojis), #DancingQueen, #HighMaintenance (hmmm maybe I should consider that pair) and several other partnered emoticons.  But wait, there’s more, you can also bag yourself (pun intended) a matching clutch for a cool $1,595. Yeah, I think I’ll probably just stick to the emojis on my iPhone and let this fad pass me by. I mean sure, maybe if they were under $50 so that I didn’t feel bad when I binned them, once they reached their expiry date.

As much as I’m clearly not the biggest fan of the overpriced M’oticon shoe range, they’re certainly still worth a mention, if not just for the pure amusement of it all.

Check out some of the emoji pairings on offer and make up your own mind on the M’oticon range…

An evening with Karen Walker, Simone Cipriani & Derek Henderson…

Karen Walker Visible

Karen Walker Visible

This season sees the launch of Karen Walker’s latest campaign entitled “Visible”.  A campaign that, together with the United Nations’ Ethical Fashion Institute (EFI) aims to highlight, celebrate and acknowledge, by creating and supporting the work of artisan community groups throughout Kenya.

Presenting to a captured audience at The Nathan Club on Friday evening, Simone Cipriani, Chief Technical Advisor of the EFI (of the United Nations’ International Trade Centre), along with Karen Walker and photographer Derek Henderson, spoke about their recent collaboration with the United Nations in Kenya.

Karen Walker Visible Karen Walker Visible Karen Walker Visible Karen Walker Visible

Cipriani explained the EFI works with communities throughout Africa and in Haiti, up-skilling artisans, while paying them a “fair wage” to make products for luxury brands that include the likes of Fendi, Marni, Vivienne Westwood and Stella McCartney. Cipriani says the EFI approached Karen Walker because the brand is positive and innovative, the perfect match to celebrate and empower the artisans of Kenya.

The EFI’’s motto is “Not Charity, Just Work”, and in teaming up with Karen Walker set about to create sustainable business for micro-artisans by utilising their direct skill-set, creating a series of screen-printed pouches that will accompany every pair of Walker’s “Visible” eyewear. In addition to this, more elaborate and embellished versions, also made by Kenyan artisan groups, will be available to buy separately.

Not one to rest on her laurels, Walker takes the project one step further by starring the artisans themselves in her latest campaign, to literally make visible, the artisans behind the designs, through the portrait photography of Derek Henderson. Henderson captures the machinists, tailors, production managers, metal workers and cutters, who have acquired or refined their craft through the ethical fashion initiative.

“Visible” is not the first campaign Karen Walker has collaborated on with the EFI and we’re sure it wont be the last!
