Very rarely do we happen upon something on the internet that is just so awesomely jaw-dropping, that we are stopped in our tracks, forced to investigate further! This is especially true when said jaw-dropping awesomeness entails baking! But oh no, this isn’t just some dime-a-dozen cupcake maker. No. This gothic Stepford Wife hybrid is so much more. Something quite genius and oh so unique…
Meet LA-based photographer Christine McConnell, a poster girl for the 1950s, who creates the most deliciously grotesque and dissident cakes and bakes. Take for example this batch of wafflecones Christine made…
Apple pie with crushed pecans and salted caramel in the shape of a Tim Burton-esque Tree of Life:
A groomed, model-like figure, the 32-year-old loves nothing better than posing for a 1950s-style shoot wearing floral print frocks and pastel-coloured pinafores, a la Stepford Wives:
McConnell is part stylist, part performance artist with an acquired eye for retro, surreal and anarchic scenarios.
McConnell’s addictive Instagram feed is testimony to where imagination (and plenty of baking skill) can take you, with a series of brilliantly dark and witty kitchen scenes. Little wonder she has 110,000+ followers.
Her creations land somewhere between Tim Burton, Desperate Housewives and The Addams Family, with a dash of Hitchcock mixed in for good measure.
Christine acquires a ‘facehugger’ from the movie Alien…
McConnell taught herself to bake watching YouTube videos, and names her idols as Tim Burton, Vincent Price, Alfred Hitchcock, and Paula Deen.
Creative commission – this cake was commissioned by pop star Adam Lambert for a voodoo bayou-themed party. According to McConnell, ‘The tongue is a candle!’
“I’m very enamoured with the style of the 1940’s, ’50’s, and ’60’s,” Christine says. “But I love the goofy sense of comedy that came out of the 1980’s. So my work is kind of a pretty/spooky combination of those things.”
Incredibly, McConnell is a trained hair and makeup professional whose baking is just a hobby. Her real living is made in beauty photography and through other visual design work.
